I used to be somewhat more tolerant in this regard but I admit that now I'm not.

The Internet can be a great resource and method of communication between people but when I see how some people use it I genuinely fear for the future of Mankind. But then I'm of the opinion that everything in BDSM starts with the mind and nobody has got any business getting into any sort of dynamic with anyone until what truly lies between the ears has been figured out. YMMV, especially if you're just into kinky sex.

However... I feel that there's just as many cliches and stereotypes in profile photos as there are in the text in profiles, e.g. warnings from Sydney University, Anais Nin quotes, S/slashy S/speak, and laundry lists of kinks.

For example..

Bruised arses.... I'm aware that some people are sadists, some people are masochists, but I cannot for the life of me figure out why anyone posts in a profile photos of bruised arses.

High heels..

Photos of genitalia... is this the online equivalent of flashing or the BDSM equivalent of the dirty raincoat brigade? Even dommes are getting in on the act, some with CB2000, CB3000, and so on.

Photos of playrooms and collections of toys.

Men who have that freshly kicked in the goolies expression trying to look domly.

Holiday photos of someone standing at least 100 yards from the camera.

Stolen photographs and artwork, particularly of that Japanese artist who specializes in images of larger women being worshipped by weedy men.

Photos of cleavage or tits.

Black clothing

Purple hair dye

I would take exception to the black clothing. Some places, black is the fashion look and everyone owns a lot of it. I wear less now that I no longer live in Manhattan, but back then we referred to it jokingly as always being ready for a funeral.

Ew.

I agree with all of the already mentioned.
I hate sideways photos. I'm not straining my neck to look at you.
And the "Dom" look, but on some it just looks creepy and has a "I'm gonna kidnap you and no one will ever find you ever again" vibe to it.

Hillwilliam -> RE: Profile Photos (12/24/2012 7:55:48 AM)

Ducklips and teh bird.
It just screams Jr Hi mentality.

NuevaVida -> RE: Profile Photos (12/24/2012 10:35:53 AM)

Dick pics and duck lips picks.

I have cleavage pics so I'm sure I fall under unacceptable to others, in fact I've even questioned posting them myself, but I like em lol. Non unique but hey :)

Nakhla -> RE: Profile Photos (12/24/2012 10:43:04 AM)

I'm out of the loop on duck-lips. Is this a euphemism or the effect of too much collagen?

TieMeInKnottss -> RE: Profile Photos (12/24/2012 11:08:36 AM)

I agree on the "Dom scowl". Seems that, if they must leave their pants on the only way they can prove their "dominance" is by standing with no shirt and scowling at the camera.

TheBoyDownBelow -> RE: Profile Photos (12/24/2012 11:24:18 AM)

I just read a Domme's profile, who asked several times not wanting to see the male genitals. But she had several friends with exactly that as the primary photo. Consistency is a bitch, LOL!

stellauk -> RE: Profile Photos (12/24/2012 12:19:26 PM)

Oh there's also bathroom pics, something which I've been guilty of in the past.

It's girls doing the kissy face, but usually look like a fish...or a duck.

Have you ever seen a profile photo (usually on "who is viewing you") that makes you NOT want to contact someone. I don't mean that the person is or is not physically attractive but that they are doing something so STUPID you think "this person is a tool"

Too true. I would never write to a peasant drinking coffee from a mug, and not a bone china cup. [8D]

Report his photo. Says when you post pictures that the profile picture cannot be obscene.

It's not really obscene. It's just a nude body to me. I couldn't care less about his "junk". If it was against TOS, I was going to give him a heads up, that's all.

From the profile edit page:

Please only post pictures you took yourself
Please do not post commercial photos or artwork
Please do not post explicit primary photos

There have been some photos of guys that were just slobs. Torn, stained clothing, filthy house, looks like he lives in Mom's basement.

And yeah, nude photos in general turn me off. Simply on the premise of "why do I need to see you naked before I even know you?" It tells me what they think is important.

TheBoyDownBelow -> RE: Profile Photos (12/24/2012 4:49:46 PM)

I just remembered. There was a primary photo of a Domme, who had a cat tied up in rope. Nothing drastic, and the pet was never really harmed. Just a staged photo. However I do love cats, and the picture offended me deeply. IMO it sends the wrong message.

TieMeInKnottss -> RE: Profile Photos (12/24/2012 11:32:31 PM)

Wedding photos-- especially if you were the groom
Profiles for men that only have a woman in the pic... Granted, it is usually a woman chained to the floor...

Oh yeah, I really want to have sex on your sheets that haven't been washed in a year. Next!

So I'm guessing you are not into active immunisation?!

descrite -> RE: Profile Photos (12/25/2012 7:05:27 AM)

Photos obviously intended to hide the weight/size of the person in the shot (usually accomplished by taking face-only, or some faux-artsy angle up and over the shoulder, maybe while the person is prone, or prominently displaying a good quality -large breasts- to obscure the fact that it is attached to someone mainly unattractive). Photos are supposed to help us get an idea of what you do look like, not give us a false impression and demonstrate what you don't look like.

TieMeInKnottss -> RE: Profile Photos (12/26/2012 11:17:06 AM)

New one today. Guy in full suit..tie, jacket, dress shirt..is pushing up his shirt and tie and has his pants unbuckled so that his cock is hanging out.. It was obviously taken in a bathroom mirror and looks like while he was at work. Just funny because he has the perfectly knotted red tie still hanging there...

SinFix -> RE: Profile Photos (12/26/2012 11:25:48 AM)

The same old naked torso in a mirror shot is pretty lame...

and I will add that for me I don't put much stock in pictures cause I know a lot of people that look fab in photo but in person aren't that great or like me aren't photogenic but in person considered attractive...

So how many of you put a judement on a photo as an initial impression? talking looks/attractive wise

Haha because I always think that about my own photos (I look better in them then in person!). I put stock in the ones that look slightly average because those kind of tell me they are real. I did not know about people using models or stealing pics...so I, at first, thought there were so many beautiful people on here no one would ever contact me!

A good photo makes me more likely to open a profile. However it is not a must have. For me a missing height/weight information, or falsified age are of a bigger concern. An empty profile and no journal entries are a huge turn-off. I am more likely to send a message to a inspiring and well written profile without any pictures than having nice photos and nothing else to talk about. It makes an initial message difficult, if not impossible. The interests section just does not go deep enough.

Of course there are people who I find unattractive. There at least you know from the start. On another note, if someone wants to have their face picture posted, I suggest not do it as the primary image. Primary pictures can easily end up in an internet archive, and stay there forever.
