Oh no! There is no way I could ever make that mistake.

This is reassuring. [:)]

These people aren't just looking for information. For a dry recitation of facts. They're looking for interaction and discussion. The mistake many regulars make is to presume that the need which must be fulfilled is a lack of information - and that consequently, giving them information will satisfy that need.

There's a natural stratification of the membership based upon experience. The jaded need a place to hang out, but the newbies and those still developing benefit from being in a peer group which shares their excitement and sense of discovery. Without being able to readily find that peer group, they're not going to hang around long unless they have a humiliation fetish.

I'm fairly lost as to exactly where this thread is right now. So I'm back to the "send the newbies to read past threads" issue. I agree with TAFKAA on this. As a newbie, if all I wanted was dry information, I'd just read a handful of the books I picked up from the booklist thread and not bother with the forums.

I do like to traipse around through old threads; I found a great one about "making the first move" started a year or 2 ago by Epytropos, filled with lots of intelligent dissenting views and food for thought. I noticed though that most of the posters on that thread are gone from CM, so there is no ongoing interactive with them anymore.

I'd add something to TAFKAA's point. While long-time CM members have posted on the issues and questions that are raised in the past, time and experience have in most cases presumably "morphed" their views from the place of their original posts. I would hope most people change and grow over time and with experience, so I am interested in their views now, as much as 5 years ago, on a given topic. So here's hoping that people continue to post on "old news".

Has this thread been allowed off topic long enough so that we are not accused of not allowing drift??[:D] Can we please get back to the original topic, no offense, that is NOT related to moderation??

You know I think it went off topic maybe 30 pages or so ago :)

I think my net conclusion from the entire thing is that everyone here wants you to solve their problems for them. (half-joke)

Sorry VAA.

I thought this thread was titled "The decline of collarme"??

Moderation is just one aspect of the decline, not the only one.
And that's why there are several different takes and opinions that aren't exactly about moderation.
Or have I missed something??

IMHO, if you pull any posts that mention something that is within the thread as a whole but not specifically on 'moderation', wouldn't that just prove what some have said here regarding inconsistent moderation??

xssve -> RE: The decline of collarme (1/11/2013 6:46:23 AM)

I think it started going downhill, insofar as it has, i.e., posters acting like bunch of ADHD kindergarteners in dire need of medication, about the time LuckyAlbatross stopped posting, what happened to her anyway?

Not to argue with you, but please read the first post. And I pulled nothing here.

Me Me!! I've never been on a time out, never banned and only a few gold letters. I must be one of those spesul ones. [;)]

Me either.
Even under my former nick.
I had never been moderated [awaiting approval], warned about posts, ect.
The only gold letters I have gotten where in regards to removing an old profile and when a Mod THOUGHT I didn't post a link to my website.
Never for correction of my behavior.

Gonna back Alpha on that one.
I saw zero posts pulled because there were zero violations of the written TOS.
Things got heated but there were no violations.
That said, If cetain people had been on duty, Im confident the thread would have been gutted if not removed altogether.

I'm inclined to agree.

It might have drifted slightly but on the whole it has been quite civilised for the most part. [8D]

me either.. [:)]

I am a very good girl.. [:D] ..the only gold letters i got told me mine had been pulled cuz i quoted a post that was a violation & pulled, so not "my bad".. I have never even been warned or nothin' [;)]

I feel sorta unloved now.. [&o]

Oh don't get me wrong. I've had gold letters for posts being pulled for different reasons. Some I thought were insanely stupid reasons but I just rolled my eyes and said "whateva" and some I deserved and I just laughed and thought it was soooo worth it. [:D]

VideoAdminAlpha -> RE: The decline of collarme (1/11/2013 2:16:13 PM)

Again, this is not a thread about moderation, as per the Opening Poster. If it stays on moderation practices even though this thread was specifically started NOT to include moderation, I will lock the thread. I will do it even if everyone said they LOVE all the staff, it is not on topic. Even though gentle, this is last warning on posting about moderation here. You have a chance to actually put something here that might be useful in helping improve the site, rather than rehash a tired old subject that is probably running somewhere else this very second. Do YOU have any ideas on what may improve the site that may be doable? Get more posters? Breathe life into the forums? Do you even think there is a decline?

Go for it. [;)]

ORIGINAL: JeffBC

The purpose of this thread is to explore a tangent I picked up from the "a thread on moderation" thread. I noted many of the regulars lamenting some sort of decline in collarme. Given that I happen to like this site I thought I'd ask for people's thoughts on this that are NOT related to moderation.

What has changed?
Do you have any thoughts for how to improve things?

Just to repost the Opening thread.

JeffBC -> RE: The decline of collarme (1/11/2013 3:17:26 PM)

I'd like to add to that original thought.

Aswad had already started a thread on moderation. I didn't want moderation comments here simply because they would have more constructive (easier to cull for an executive summary) if they'd all been in one thread.

I had hoped we would talk about non-moderation things which frankly, lands in OUR laps not the site owners or mods' laps. And overall I'm not disappointed. Perhaps I'm just imagining things but I feel like there are some subtle changes in the boards now. I don't think anyone had a come to jesus moment with themselves but I do hope, at least, that some awareness was raised.

Insofar as the mod stuff, we really are kind of repeating the same old thing over and over. Has anyone culled the points and sent them to VAA? If not, I'll get it done.

edited to add
Well damn, there I just brought up moderation again... but I'm hoping to do it in a "closure" sort of fashion rather than continue the discussion here.

Aileen1968 -> RE: The decline of collarme (1/11/2013 3:22:37 PM)

The decline started for me with the arrival of the sock lesbians and their herd of sheeple that became just as nasty as they were.
There was no longer fun banter like in 2005 and 2006. Instead, it seemed like every thread was filled with the socks and their minions running amuck calling everyone fucking idiots.
