i have also been known to save veg peelings (not potato) and onion skins, top/tails and throw them in with it. the frugal gourmet show had that on MANY years ago, and i've always loved it. maybe comes from being part of a large family, composting things before it became fashionable, and reusing as much as you can out of everything.

i KNOW that's where my fondness for quilting comes from. this past winter, i couldn't bear to throw away my old flannel jammies, so i recycled them into a flannel quilt/cover.

I am sooo not a frugal person lol. I don't buy laundry detergent. I buy the little pods...just throw one in the washer. I buy the same thing for the dishwasher. I'm the type of person who is constantly throwing things out because I absolutely hate clutter. I'm more of a minimalist. I also don't buy large jars or tubs of stuff even if it is cheaper because I know it would take me years to use it all up because I'm the only one who uses it so I would rather buy the smaller portions for one person. For me, if it takes extra work or uses up more room I don't buy it or use it.

I think I'm a non-frugal for the same reason others are frugal. I grew up dirt poor and so we had to do whatever it took to make things last as long as they could. As I got older and I had money to do what I wanted, I decided "fuck this" and did what I wanted and made my life easier.

I have people who yell at me about how I turn up the heat in the winter instead of turning it down to save on costs. I grew up where most of the time we had no heat in our home and we froze most of the time. When I got older, both me and my sisters do the same thing now...we refuse to go without heat or being cold in even the smallest amount.

I'm freaky..... yes, that way, too.

I rinse EVERY thing that goes into the recycle bin since it says "No Garbage." I'm always thinking, "Am I using more resources by rinsing this than are being saved by recycling?" Now that ALL the plastics from 1 through 6 are re-cycled, well, at least I'm not feeling gulity about throwing away the Chinese take-out clam-shell boxes. Rinsing them? Probably freaky.

Rinsed condoms make great ballons for the grand-kids to play with! Now THAT's freaky!!!!

I have a friend who (being raised in the depression) takes paper that has been used on one side and rather than tossing it, cuts it into quarters to make note paper.

A friend and I have made a game out of who can be the most frugal. I have done things like buying a can of Spam to last me an entire week for lunches. The sandwhiches were made on bread begged daily from the kitchen where I worked. A gallon of milk is split in half, powdered milk is added to make up the difference so I have two gallons. Shampoo, conditioner, etc is bought at the Dollar Tree where EVERYTHING is $1.00. Of course the horse has a quart of $9.00 shampoo. (somethings not quite right w/ that picture). I now filet my own chicken breasts ( the split breasts are cheaper than boneless) and use the back/ribs and some attached meat to make my chicken soup. The breast filets are for another time. :) I love to save money!

Anti-drift from being frugal - keep it freaky!!! -or at least SUPER-frugal.... How 'bout grinding the chicken bones after making your soup to use as fertilizer? THAT's freaky!

My freezer is STUFFED with food - mostly pork - that I bought since "It's on sale. I'll use this for sure." And now my job includes cafeteria meals at $1.50 each. (Lunch AND dinner are each $1.50 - dinner served at 5 pm when I'm leaving, so I eat then. GOOD food - Friday lunch was shrimp etoufee'.) Since I started there, I haven't even opened the freezer.

I have to say that i grew up in a military house on a budget all my young life- so we economized on every thing we could. We bought things on sale at the commissary and yes we even did the toothpaste trick as well too. We would drain all the soap from the bottoms of the shampoo into another one and then use water and finish it off. That habbit stuck with me and I am glad it did. Second marriage was to a Navy Seal and I budgeted like crazy with the twins. And Still do it with a house full of teen Boys beside my own. Some of them were thrown out so I recycle them into respectable kids. i have also done the carcass trick as well to make stock - and i grow a garden of veggies to save there. We use the old t-shirts as rags - or to make rag rugs- but if we like the design we cut it out for patch quits or lap blankets. = but that one about used condoms= lol= nope = taught every boy use every time new and flush them down the toilet.

We actually have a hot water bladder i believe, he just wants to use the plastic bottles. I guess he figures he's recycling or something. We also have heating pads.

You could also make him a rice/cracked corn bag. Tube socks work great, or you could use some soft fabric to make a tube. Fill with rice or cracked corn. Sew the end shut. Microwave for about a minute. Really good for necks. And re-usable.
