I think Collarspace is a good place. It's geared for the fetish crowd in particular. I'm not sure how successful finding a kink partner on a "vanilla" dating site works. I've even tried that route to. When someone signs on to Collarspace, there shouldn't be any surprise as to what kind of site they are on.

when one reads that women are getting 100-150 messages a day, I can assume (alas) that's its pretty improbable to even get a conversation going here, much less actually meet someone.

It isn't if the message stands out. Personally I skim messages by hovering over them. If I see one that doesn't sound like the generic messages I receive I respond. It really IS that simple for me.
