I don't care if it's reasonable or not. There are a ton of nicknames that I would reject summarily.

Yep. Me, too. I'll even go one better - there are time when I won't even take someone's post on a forum seriously simply because of their screen name or forum avatar.

SacredDepravity -> RE: The name says what? (1/1/2013 6:46:31 PM)

Just peeking in again to say I am just loving all these made up screen names. I've laughed my butt off too many times already.

xLaChienne -> RE: The name says what? (1/1/2013 6:46:49 PM)

No, it's not just you.

It is a judgmental thing. It's employing good judgement. Which many don't do when considering a user name.

I tend to take it all into account. The name, the profile text, and the pictures. If a name is overtly sexual or something/someone I'm not interested in then I likely don't bother.

There was one on the other side (since deleted by the mods) that referred to rape....and in his profile he bragged about being a convicted rapist.

One of my red flags for sure!

Okay, so I'm admittedly relatively new, and I know the adage about not judging a book by its cover, but still... is it just me, or does someone's profile name have the ability to make you turn away before even reading their profile? In the bdsm community especially, is it not less a judgmental thing than a real indicator thing? For example, if someone's name was 'WomenAreBitches' (please god don't let that really be someone's name... I just improvised!), isn't it reasonable for someone who isn't into degradation or humiliation to assume things from that?

I'm probably rambling, so I'm going to hush now [:)]

I think you're right....

For example.....

"I'dLikeToKillYouAndEATyouandthenspityouout" is not a good screen name.

"FUCKYOUandthehorseyoucameinonyoufuckingbitch" is also a bad screen name. It portends to something that is less than enticing.

"YOUpeiceofshitpigI'vealwayshatedyourmotherandfranklyyourfatherisalsoapieceofshit" would also be a poor choice as to someone to respond to.

(Hope I've helped).

Ok.....that made me laugh.....HARD.....thanks lookie....I needed that.

RabbitsHeart -> RE: The name says what? (1/3/2013 1:17:05 AM)

I think science has proven that a rose by any other name does NOT smell as sweet.

I would interact with a man who has something vile written on his T-shirt. Why would I interact with a man who calls himself by an intentionally offensive screen name? They are telling you who they are with these choices. If you don't like them, you won't like him. And yes, I apply that logic to profile photos as well.

Nothing is random.

Missokyst -> RE: The name says what? (1/3/2013 9:38:53 AM)

I don't specifically avoid any name. But I do give some names less credence if it begins with master, lord, or kneelbitch, mostly because those type rarely appeal to me. If they dropped me a line I would likely answer regardless of the name, and determine if there were any redeeming qualities. But I don't "look" look, as in checking out people for possible connection. If I did I would be looking hard at their screen name choice because it is a good indicator of how they think.
Mine for instance is just a twist on what I am, a masochist. My being submissive is irrelevant unless someone sparks that within me. None of my nicks suggests I am sub, a deliberate choice.

So quick question... Does my nick ring the wierd bell?

It rings the "Standard ML" bell for me, with the implication that you're crazy good at it, but then I'm a λittle bit wierd myself.

Me, I prefer a bit more to go on than a screen name before I start making assumptions about anything, though.

I've had people assume I'm a middle-eastern fellow on the basis of my screen name, when in fact I'm pretty much ethnically Norse. That's always amusing, since it's generally islamophobes that make the assumption known to me. The actual origin of my screen name, which is indeed Arabic and means "black man" (i.e. Nubian), is that (a) it's what Nyarlathotep was referred to as by the fellahin, and (b) it's the name of a Fallen Oracle in a game I happen to enjoy a lot for the way it plays around with the notion of what is real and what is not.

IWYW,

kiwisub12 -> RE: The name says what? (1/3/2013 2:12:48 PM)

My nickname is fairly boring, but like tattoos, i couldn't come up with anything else that i wanted to live with for the rest of my life. And it says something about me.

Posts from Longdongsilver and Kneelbitch are not well received by me. They seem...... very one dimensional.
And when i was looking, i wanted more than one dimension. I wanted them all .... including those not discovered yet.

You can't help the name your parents gave you., but a name that you choose? Should have some descriptive or imaginative aspect.

I tried for:
iRoninterTubelianMasteroftheinterGallacticinterStellarNebulae, but this horseshit site wont accept a valid (and TWUE) nick like that.

TieMeInKnottss -> RE: The name says what? (1/3/2013 2:42:23 PM)

I know I draw an immediate conclusion, right or wrong, based on a screen name. Given, legal names are one thing-parents give them to you, there is often a meaning or significance to it that we didn't get to have any input on (I.e. your father's dead uncle's name...) and they're a pain to legally change. Screen names..you pick yourself and it reflects your mindset.

darkenchantments -> RE: The name says what? (1/3/2013 3:37:58 PM)

What a great thread! lmao at some of the screen names put up here. I agree that since we choose our screen names, and since nothing happens just by chance, then the name we put up there does say something meaningful about us; even if we may not realise it. Mine is intended to reflect one or two aspects of my character and interests, although some of those aren't readily evident at first glance, unless you happen to share them. I always like names that people come up with that do give you a reasonable idea of their character or interests, and that are also maybe a bit creative.

I do love some of the more exotic ones, too. I'll often look up the profile of one of the 'UltimateLordandMasterof all' types - just for the fun of it. 'Balldestructer' sounds a bit reminiscent of the demon in 'Ghostbusters', but has gotta be worth a look. And I recently found one something like 'MistressTopShop', which has got to either be looking to really do for you, or else a good name for a findomme!

mnottertail -> RE: The name says what? (1/3/2013 3:39:32 PM)

There was once a girl out here that had the nick; smirkingsheep.

I was in love in name only, I tell you what.  So perfect and precious.

Duskypearls -> RE: The name says what? (1/3/2013 4:23:20 PM)

A while back I asked folks here about there usernames, and here's what came of it:

Anyone not on that thread care to share what their username means to them, or how/why they have it?

With my name I wanted to express my submissiveness. And also I pay attention at Dom names, if it represents something like "lickInBetweenMyToesWhore" name wouldn't excite me:)

Very few get the intentional irony of my CM username.

SimplyMichael -> RE: The name says what? (1/4/2013 1:39:12 PM)

People take names pretty seriously. I used to go by "CrappyDom" as a sarcastic take on names. It was funny how many people would react more to the name than to the words. I changed my name for a number of personal reasons but the response was certainly a part of it.
