I don't expect the world to change on account of my phobia, but it makes me wonder about the nature of someone with no regard for others. Arachnophobia is a very common phobia, and tends to produce very strong reactions in those who suffer from it. By comparison, the fact that unaware users will see that photo with no warning is comparable to forcefeeding a diabetic a candy cane, no, a whole bag of sugar.

For instance, I have read the Hobbit, and am very aware of the giant spiders in Mirkwood - yet I chose to see the movie because I was aware of what was coming, and was able to prepare myself for it. The same with Shelob in LotR, and Aragog and his brood in HP:Chamber of Secrets. But for the picture to pop up without warning is comparable to surprising someone by dropping such a thing in their lap.

It is absolutely not the same as diabetes. You are fussing about a spider that someone posted, but WILLINGLY went and saw movies with even bigger spiders. You are cherry picking your phobia to indulge in maximum drama.

Ok, so the person with the phobia, as illogical as the phobia may be, should then be the one who has to restrict their own privileges so as not to accidentally view a trigger picture? The first time is one thing - but after you make the person aware of what their actions may cause, then it seems to be a moral and ethical question, as well as a admin question. If there was a whole roomful of people socializing, and getting along peaceably for the most part, and one person walked in and started popping a spider, snake, etc. on people unawares, how long would it take before that person was ejected? Who would you blame for the situation? The phobic or the person causing the trigger event?

So what was that you were saying bubblenuts? Something about realistically.

If he's looking at profiles he has the option of having the pics shown or just having it in list form. Which doesn't show any pictures.

This is true. I may have misread, but I thought he was relating as story about an avatar or perhaps a pic of a spider that was withing the thread. Both of which are acceptable by the site.

I'm about to post a huge ass pic of a spider.

Just sayin.

I'm sure you weren't the only one with this thought.

What about a pic of Spider-Man then ?

I wouldn't try to freak you out on purpose, but if I had a spider as an avatar, I wouldn't change it.

I remember when TwiceHappy posted here, she had a spider avatar and said she wouldn't change it. Her choice of course but I had to put her on hide so I wouldn't see it lol.

I am deathly afraid of spiders, too. I know that at any time I'm on the internet, I might click on a page that shows a spider and I'll just have to deal. I have no intention of writing congress to pass a bill that bans photos of spiders from the internet. I know my fear is irrational and not the norm. I also know photos on the internet in no way compares with someone throwing them at me. If someone did that, they'd likely be pummeled before the night was out.

Block the photo and move on. It's not as if there are spider pics posted on every thread.

And thanks for that warning Level! I don't go to the Train Wreck thread much for that very reason lol.

As I said, I did block it. My concern is for others who might be surprised by that pic to their physical detriment. Given that my career is being a Nurse, I tend to think of the greater picture in regards to others, not only that but I firmly believe in that the right to swing your arm stops when you hit someone else's nose. In the case of a story, the "swing" is a slow, telegraphed arc that isn't aimed at anyone at all - in order to get "hit" you have to read the story. In the case of a pic, the swing is a sucker punch launched from a dark room - there's no chance to get out of the way.

Technically, yes. But if you compare the restriction on no explicit primary photos to the idea that posting a trigger to someone's phobia (a common and highly reactive phobia, no less) is somehow alright, then this suggests that the problem lies with the site rules, not with the person who cannot help their phobia. It's a little like blaming the female for getting raped.

IMHO, if you believe that bolded sentence, having arachnophobia is the least of your problems.

That sentence made me sick to my stomach. Should I report you for it?

You are a grown ass man. You have a duty to yourself to do what you can to avoid triggers. Others have no obligation whatsoever to you. No matter how hard you wish to thrust it upon them. As to the original picture, that person had every right to have that picture up. And after you told them of your phobia they still had that right. You're upset because the person didn't remove the picture like you wished. You can be mad and you can go sit in the corner and cry in your beer. They don't have to move to your directives.

You have the phobia. It's your job to manage it. Others may or may not accommodate you. As they please.

Oh, and I've had posts reported more times than I can count. Certain posters had a habit of starting shit, then crying foul when they had their ass handed to them. And, of course, they had their little mod-friends, so.....

And all that since you joined a couple of weeks ago........ I`m impressed. Was it new socks for christmas ?

As for moderators not giving a crap, thats nonsense. The job is not only stressy, but stops you being able to read threads normally. IE, you have one eye constanly on moderation. If you think people do it for free to scratch an itch, you should give it a try.

As for the OP, yes I have reported one person for constantly making the same offensive accusation at me. I tend to deal with things by return of post....lol Probably why I have had so many gold letters.... I have never blocked anyone though.

No. This is the Internet. It's like you chose to turn on computer. No one was physically injured.

Its not even close to being the same as forcing candy cane to a diabetic, , take some responsibility for YOUR actions ....

As I said, it takes conscious effort to continue reading a story - the context clues allow the reader to see what is coming and to stop reading long before the trigger event. The point is that a visual image is far more commonly a trigger than groups of words can be. Choosing to continue posting such an image as a primary photo when you know you are deliberately affecting other people, possibly to their detriment, is not the choice of an ethical or moral person.

I solved the problem for myself - as I said I used the Block User function. The question is whether we have reported someone on this site - for me the answer is yes, and my rationale is a valid one, regardless of whether the admins choose to comprehend that it is such.

It is disingenuous to say that every single person out there will see your stories or postings and always have fair warning about what is coming up. There are no "context clues" if they click on a screen where you have posted and the word ENEMA jumps out and scares the bejeezus out of them. I am belaboring this concept because I am trying to show you that it isn't possible to protect everyone from everything. It doesn't matter if a visual causes a panic attack more commonly than reading a group of words. It still happens.

You yourself are guilty of hurting those people capable of being hurt by a topic that is near and dear to your heart. There may even be someone who has a near heart attack by seeing someone in medieval apparel like in your avatar photo. One may conclude that you are an immoral and unethical person for continuing to offend those who are negatively impacted by your words and photos. Whatever you pick, someone out there will have an issue with it. It isn't possible to remake the world for every individual. Reporting someone for a photo that does not violate the TOS of this site is whimsical and lacks validity while it clogs the system. It's like frivolous law suits. You seem to feel entitled that this public site should indulge your personal fear. That infringes on the rights of others and therefore is not a valid reason for reporting a photo.

If you're truly a diabetic, you should know damn well you shouldn't have that bag of sugar.

If you have a true, irrational paranoia, your should know damn well you shouldn't go to a movie with giant hairy spiders.

I posted to this thread with what happened, why it happened, and the resolution to it. And immediately I came under hostile attack. YOU do whatever makes you happy there skippy.
The analogy is true. Telling a phobic that it's his fault that he's terrified by a trigger is just like telling a female that she provoked the rape.
