For me, you came across as one of these folks that are willing to legislate anything and everything that poses the slightest risk to anyone.

Life doesn't work like that.

Of course it doesn't. I do quite a lot of hiking and camping, and running across the territory of wolf spiders in the forest is a risk I take - willingly. When I see them my heart jumps into my throat, my kness get all weak, my respirations shoot up, and I do one of two things: I either clear out or I SMASHSMASHSMASH.

I don't want to microcontrol anyone - but again, the analogy holds true - if someone shoves a spider into the faces of random people, they should be made to put it away. In this case the analogy should be that they move it to a secondary or tertiary picture - if I choose to view all their pics then I shouldn't complain if I find the spider.

So you chose to go hiking and shove your face into spiders? You could have killed yourself with your weak heart. Someone should 10-13 you to a behavioral health facility for suicidal tendencies, since everyone is to be held responsible and everything.

I'm trying to debate this with an adult mindset, and I'm not resorting to hostility. Which I am being subjected to. You will find that if you carefully read back, nowhere did I say that I had a weak heart - I did say that I am a high-alarm arachnophobic. Nor did I say that I "shove" my face into spiders. My point is that someone deliberately trying to trigger someone else's phobias is not acting in a moral or ethical manner. If you go back and read my original post on this, you will see how I originally tried to resolve the situation, and how I was responded to - certainly her right to do so, but not an ethical or moral choice.

Do you know how tempting it is to post a pic of a giant spider right now?

Apparently, quite often on social networking sites. The spider is a popular "totem" for some people, especially those who believe in therianism or animism.

Sorry, I don't see them having a spider avatar as pushing it in your face. It's an unfortunate meeting, like if you round a corner in the woods, and run into a banana spider's web...

As fun as that would be for you, it would force me off this thread. This would, in effect, censor me in precisely the same way some are thinking that I am arguing others should be censored. I am actually enjoying the debate - minus the outright hostility - the thread was "Have you ever reported someone?" My post: Yes, and this was why.

Heaven's to Mergatroid!!

It is incumbent upon the person with the psychic/emotional malady of arachaphobia, or any other phobia, to do the necessary work to relieve themselves of it and not become a menace to society. Whether that takes the form of hypnosis, therapy, EMDR, drugs or whatever else, YOUR fear/dysfunction is NOT our responsibility. It is YOUR job to do your work to remedy the situation, NOT mine or anyone elses!

For pity's sake, be a man (adult) and STOP making others responsible for carrying and doing YOUR work for YOU! It's YOUR job, not anyone elses!! STOP trying to force people to tiptoe around your boo boo. Enough with the drama, the blaming and the shaming. Grow some backbone and do the bloody work like the rest of us!!!

Face and conquer your fears....PERIOD!!

So, it's ok for you to censor (or request the censoring of) someone who is following TOS, but unethical for us to censor you. Ok.

If I come on the site, and click "Home" to view profiles, and out of the blue a spider pops up inches from my eyes, how is that not shoving it in my face? And what about others who come on the site unaware? They will end up with the same problem. Again, how is someone's right to swing their arm the right to hit others in the nose?

the hostility , apart from the notion of banning pics because it might trigger a heart attack, aside, actually its your crude and ugly analogies that are pissing many off.

Then now would be the time to realize people do not have to agree with your why and have the right to say so without 10 more posts from you trying to justify it.

No need to justify your reason it is just that... your reason….just as many others have stated their reasons and moved on.

I firmly believe in that the right to swing your arm stops when you hit someone else's nose. In the case of a story, the "swing" is a slow, telegraphed arc that isn't aimed at anyone at all - in order to get "hit" you have to read the story. In the case of a pic, the swing is a sucker punch launched from a dark room - there's no chance to get out of the way.

No. This is the Internet. It's like you chose to turn on computer. No one was physically injured.

So you can guarantee that that pic won't cause a cardiac arrest in an arachnophobic with heart disease?

She doesn't need to guarantee a thing. It's allowed on this site to post pictures of spiders. The person with the spider phobia needs to shelter themselves, the onus of responsibility is on them, not on the world. Just like if someone is diabetic the onus is on them to follow dietary requirements. You can't stop a diabetic from stopping at the local fudge shop and consuming a pound. Should the fudge shop close up?

I gotta chime in here.

I have a tattoo of a black widow and web on my chest.
I have EVERY right to post a picture of my tattoo on my profile if I choose to.
It does NOT violate the TOS of this site.
If someone can't handle it, simple hide my posts or profile.

I will go even further.
I often wear shirts specifically to show off my tattoos, including my black widow.
If you have a spider phobia, and seeing my tattoo triggers something with you.
Guess what the responsibility is YOURS.
You can't tell me to cover it up. Lol

If you have a phobia of spiders, it is YOUR responsibility to shelter yourself form situations that will trigger that phobia.

Just like if perfumes cause you to have asthma attacks.
You have every right to tell people in your home not to wear perfume.
You do not have the right to tell someone at corner grocery that they can't wear perfume.

I DO realize that. I simply posted as to why I had reported someone, and IMMEDIATELY came under attack. I have since done nothing but attempt to explain my actions under an onslaught of hostility, threats, and so on and so forth.

Apparently no one here can debate calmly, so I am moving on. Have fun ripping the next person apart who says anything slightly controversial to you.

You said yourself, spiders are popular as avatars; you assume the risk if seeing one when you choose to come here.

It's not a matter of someone "doing" something to you.

No, that isn't shoving it in your face.
That is them posting an acceptable and allowed photo on their PUBLIC profile.
That is YOU making the choice to come to a website where you are liable to see ANY picture include spiders.

Me shoving it in your face would be coming up to you, and burring your face into my cleavage and the black widow. Lol

Just say'n.

That is not shoving it in your face, since they did not intend to do you any harm. Therefore your reacting as if it was a personal attack was unjustified.

I was responded to with a very flippant attitude that they were glad to see that they had a form of control over me, that they had frightened me, and that it had made their day. This is a highly irresponsible attitude to have, and seeing no other recourse I reported them for the picture.

Wow...seriously??? Seriously!!???

My sister in law has a phobia of cats. She jumps to the ceiling and shakes and screams every single time she sees a cat. I guess they should remove all the kitty cat pictures too in case another person here has that phobia.

I have a phobia of heights. I guess I should report all pictures that show people skydiving or a photo shot looking down off a mountaintop. It might cause me to have a heart attack.

eeerr...YES! You're the one with the phobia....ONE person. No one else has a problem with it. That's like saying we should never ever sell candy because someone might buy it and eat it and die because that ONE person might die from sugar intake.

No wonder the mods can't help anymore. Their emails are full of this kind of irresponsible junk.

ETA: Oh and never click on my profile. I have a spider tattoo. There's no photo yet but there may be one day. Wouldn't want you to report me. (not that it would work)
