If an out and out troll rocks up into a thread and starts behaving like an asshat, then the responsible, adult, thing to do is to report them.
That's a subjective judgement and people here call "troll" any time they interact with someone who calls them on their bullshit.

This is called "being an adult".
No. Adults don't run to mommy, they sort shit out for themselves. It's also an attribute of a dominant personality - which is why those people who claim dominance - yet report at the drop of a hat - are completely undermining that claim.

Oh sure, there are some borderline cases where you could argue that it's subjective, but there are also cases where it's pretty clear that the person is trolling. Even you would have to acknowledge that.

In any case, it's up to the Moderators, not your or me, to make the call. I've no doubt that there are some people that report excessively, and I've also no doubt that the Mods are plenty smart enough to spot that kind of thing.

Now you're just repeating the same point you've made before. Of course adults don't run to mommy. I can assure you that I have never run to my mommy over a post on this forum - Although if I did, I am certain she'd give me milk and biscuits. It's clear you liken reporting a post to "running to mommy", whereas I do not. We disagree.

Who do we report about the topic being hijacked by talk of spiders and giant chickens...

Or am I hallucinating again?

Mods are not my mommy.

Saying because I go to the mods when someone violates the rules / guidelines of the site makes we weak.

Is like saying, if I call the police if I hear my neighbor beating the hell out of his wifey I am weak.

Or that kid that goes to a school admin and reports a bully is weak.

To ME not being able to follow guidelines and rules makes someone weak.
It tells me they lack self control.
And frankly if you don't have self control -
You sure in the hell don't have the ability to control others.

Lmao not running to mommy is also a trait of some submissives. Your notion of how dominants should and shouldnt act has no bearing on the realities. I would guess more dominants have reported me than submissives, given the P&R boards make up.

We should get rid of public places too, because they are too frightening for all the people with agoraphobia? (This is a real and CRIPPLING phobia) Well, sorry to tell you but I've got friends and subbies with agoraphobia, PTSD. and other phobias, and the thing to do is not to HIDE from the "normal everyday" thing that causes you fear, but to CHALLENGE IT HEAD ON. If you are afraid of spider pictures (really? A fricking PHOTO?), then I suggest you LOOK at them until you are no longer disturbed. DESENSITIZE YOURSELF. This is a good project for your Domme/Dom to help you with. They should be offering positive Motivation to help you get over your fear.

In the words of Eleanor Roosevelt, "Do something everyday that scares you."

I don't think we've ever inter-acted before so, please, understand I am taking issue with what you said and not with you.

Firstly, you canNOT be equating words in an adult discussion forum with someone beating their partner? The two don't even come close to being on par.

Likewise, your second example; the word "bully" suggests that there's some physical damage being done. Add to that fact that you made it about "a kid that goes to the school admin". That removes the whole adult part.

It is a shame (in my view) that people have become so made of KLEENEX© that they can no longer withstand a simple thing like animated disagreement; especially when that disagreement is found on a computer screen where they are safely tucked away in their home and not in any physical danger from the big, mean, interweb bully.

Next, you bring obeying the rules into the discussion and you make a fairly valid point, except that even that has some nuances.

Do you know anyone who has never broken a rule in their entire adult life? Seriously? Have you never had people that you know to be really good human beings who might be having a really bad day and they raise their voice at the waiter or toll collector or bill collector, etc.? NEVER? I would find that extremely hard to believe.

Essentially, the rules here are rules of communication. Not all people excel at communication skills and not all people view communication the same way. Clearly, you equate angry words on a screen with physical violence and while that is your right, I think it does a dis-service to victims of actual physical violence (as well as to sensationalize someone typing "Fuck you" or something similar to someone on the interwebs).

They're words and the only way they can hurt you is if you give any value to the person speaking them. I'm sure, by now, you've decided you don't give a stuff what I think so, my words - if I were to get insulting - shouldn't mean anything to you. Then, what you have is people "running to mommy" 'cause they need to pretend they got their little feelers hurt and garner some attention.

Now, the other side of the coin (and this is the part of your breaking rules analogy that made sense to me) is that (supposedly) we're all held to the same standards here. We're not but we're supposed to be and that is where the validity in your point comes in.

Using my previous example (and not truly directed at you); if I can't type "Fuck you" you certainly shouldn't be able to type "eat shit, asshole", directed at me. But, I ask again; what harm has really befallen either of us?

I'm sorry but equating words on a computer screen with physical violence weakens your argument.

Comparing adults, communicating to "a kid" who's being bullied weakens your argument.

If you know someone who's never broken a rule, chances are you're hanging about with saints and you should check your pulse, quickly.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

First let me say, I suck at breaking up quotes so I am not even gonna try.

You are right we are all adults, not kids on the playground.
That being said as adults, I do hold people to a higher standard than I would a child.

This is my playground though.
No one has the right to come here and bully me.
No, they aren't laying hands on me.
Lets be honest that isn't the only abuse someone can inflict.
I am also pretty damn thick skinned.
That doesn't mean I should have to take it or will.

I do consider me reporting abuse of MYSELF to the mods the same as reporting to the police that my neighbor is beating his wifey.
Why?
It's still abuse.
It's still violates rules and MY rights.
You (as an example) do not have the right to post, LilSquaw is a fat cunt who needs to simply fuck off and die.
That is you (as an example) being a bully and abusive.
No different than the bully on the school yard or the man who needs to beat his wifey to feel like a man.

You're right I don't know anyone who has NEVER broken a law.
In fact I know many ex cons and career criminals.
Do I choose to MY time with them?
Nope.
Not because they are ex cons.
But because I can't simply turn a blind eye to certain things.
Because to ME to do so means I am condoning it.
I make a conscious choice not to knowingly or willfully violate laws.

I TRY not knowingly and willfully violates rules of forums and sites I am member of.

Look at the name of the thread.

Then read my original post.

I told what I did, why I did it, and how the situation was resolved.

I have been under constant attack since that post as I have tried to explain the rationale, regardless of whether I was right or wrong to report the picture.

I have been comporting myself with great reserve and decorum in the face of insults, threats, and outright hostility.

Again, I am not the only person out there who is an arachnophobic. It is a common phobia, usually resulting in violent fight or flight reactions.

Rest assured, I will probably NOT post here again, as it is apparent that adult rational debate cannot occur.

Where's the attack? I see one person with one opinion, and some others with another opinion. Both sides are pointing out what they consider to be important facets in the debate.

Maybe it feels like an attack to you because no one else seems to share your opinion that spider pictures should censored from the general public. Even some people with arachnophobia have posted, they don't feel that spider pictures should be censored from public even though they don't like the pictures themselves.

Where are these insults, threats, and outright hostility?

I didn't see any either. What I saw was a bunch of people that think his attempt to punish someone simply because that person refused to do what he wanted was the wrong thing to do.

needlesandpins -> RE: Lets be honest have you ever reported anyone (1/15/2013 10:41:36 AM)

ooookkkkaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy this thread cracked on a pace. most of which i've skimmed because it's boring to me.

i have a huge phobia of spiders, and seeing those pics in here was rather horrid. however, i am aware that i am looking at my laptop and that these spiders are not going to jump out of the screen and bite me. it's kinda the same way as i can look at a pic of a bridge over water and not freak out coz i realise i am not going to fall off the fricking bridge and have to deal with my fear of deep, filthy water.

given the nature of this site i should think that anyone with such a weak heart has already died from a) over wanking. b) realising they have been ripped of by some hairy bloke preftending to be an 18yr old college girl. or c) getting outraged when the porn fails to buffer quickly enough.

all that and i didn't need to hit report [:D]

Times a billion!
Nothing weak about reporting, when needed. There have been major issues of trolling on some great threads. When people are trying to learn, it's kinda rude and childish to toll. To me, if we all were in or at a BDSM class and some jerk started spouting off some bullshit (and I say bullshit bc that is what it was. It wasn't a healthy disagreement, it was a temper tantrum) the people actually attempting to learn would be pissed. That's how I tend to view things here, I certainly can learn a lot from people, and have.

In this particular forum, the only thing we can do when this happens is either report or hide, or both. Nothing

Not only would others present be pissed but a DM or club manager with a grain of salt would kick them out.

PERIOD.
