Actually the Whiskey Rebellion was not an attempt to fight an unjust government, but an attempt to avoid paying taxes on whiskey, which was an easier way to transport and store corn at the time.
President Washington raised the militia only after tax collectors had been tarred and feathered and the target of other criminal acts.
Furthermore, those citizens of those states involve ratified the constitution or agreed to the powers granted to the Federal Government when they became states, and the Constitution gives Congress the right to levy taxes.
Since the Whiskey rebellion, moonshiners have been making whiskey in defiance of tax law and the feds, and some have engaged in open armed resistance to the enforcement of the law.
After the Whiskey Rebellion there was the trial of Aaron Burr, who was accused of treason and was acquitted of the charges.
Based on the State's Rights argument, the only time in history of an oppressed populace rising in revolt against the power of the federal government was the civil war. That act meets most of the reasons set by Jefferson in the Federalist papers. The reason for the war in the beginning was states rights, Lincoln turned it into a war against slavery when the North began to lose support after losses to Lee and the Army of Virginia.
During this period, Lincoln suspended habeas corpus, which the supreme court later ruled unconstitutional.
Now dont take my statements as to say the South was right in their actions, I am not. I am just saying that they felt justified in the course they took.
