Who are they asking to pay for it?

As an aside, Tazzy, I've always liked that you always look at both sides of things. Just wanted to say that.

Regarding the paying, we've been subsidizing abortions since Roe v Wade, as that was the intent of that bill to begin. People here who remember it taking effect (which means they're old, like me!) will recall that that was the prime argument at the time--that poor women allegedly couldn't get a clinical abortion and were forced to do the back alley thing.

Bullshit.

There have been numerous laws preventing any government at any level from paying for any abortion for decades.

The prime argument at the time was that women with resources were circumventing the laws against getting abortions while those without resources were getting them in back alleys from quacks using coat hangers. It wasn't about poor women not being able to pay for an abortion but them not having access to safe providers.

Where did you get the crazy idea anyone was asking YOU to pay for anything as a result of New York State's proposed legislation?

Really. Please list the entire range of providers of abortion services in Mississippi.

Read Roe v Wade, and take a look at the tax code under ObamaCare.

And regarding Mississippi, why should they have a clinic if the majority of their people don't want one?

And again, why do we assume here that abortion is the only option?

Because rights are rights for the minority no matter what the majority wants.

Thank you, sometimes I do fail in that attempt, but I do try.

I believe in prevention... that doesnt always mean abstinence. Prevention can also take the place of sterlization.. which most physicians wont do until a woman is 21 oe 22... or birth control.. which many who hold a strong moral belief also disagree with.

Simply saying... you got pregnant? Tough... simply doesnt work anymore. And, with out population rising by leaps and bounds... sound a bit scary as well.

Section 2 of the bill creates a new Article 17 of the Public Health
Law (PHL), which establishes in statute affirmative reproductive
rights, specifically: (1) the fundamental right of every individual
to choose or refuse contraception, and (2) the fundamental right of
every female to determine the course of her pregnancy. Section 2 of
the bill further states that an abortion may be performed by a
qualified practitioner in the absence of fetal viability and at any
time when necessary to protects a female's life or health.

Qualified practitioner.. negates the belief that a case worker can perform one.

Well that does make me feel better. Now was this the actual wording of the bill? I ask because the article quote was different in the wording.

Yes, which is why I wanted to see the actual bill.

http://open.nysenate.gov/legislation/bill/s2844-2011

Fargle found it for me....

All the sites I was seeing about it was coming from religious or right to life groups....

It seemed a bit distorted but I wanted to see for myself.

I found it. (Thanks) The article left out the last clause.

S 1701. AUTHORIZED PERFORMANCE OF ABORTIONS. THE PERFORMANCE OF AN
ABORTION BY A QUALIFIED, LICENSED HEALTH CARE PRACTITIONER, ACTING WITH
IN THE SCOPE OF HIS OR HER PRACTICE
, IS AUTHORIZED:

This looks like it would be okay for the Nurse Practioner at my OBGYN's office to perform an abortion instead of requiring my OBGYN to do it. Well. . . if I was in New York. . . yadda yadda. And it may also depend on what type of abortion you are getting.

farglebargle -> RE: Cuomo doubles down on pissing off the Right Wing... (1/22/2013 8:39:19 AM)

Actually, I was adopted in 1967. I *could have been* an abortion, quite easily. But then again, I'm not advocating the enslavement of woman to my own extremist and scientifically invalid religious beliefs.

NPs can legally perform abortions in Montana, Vermont, Rhode Island, California, and New Hampshire. Apparently, New York, Illinois, Connecticut, Oregon, New Jersey, and Washington State have issued opinions saying NPs can do abortions, too.

I did not know that. I have never looked into getting an abortion either. That is interesting.

This has become necessary since very few Ob/Gyn's are trained or willing to do abortions. The anti choice terrorists have been very effective at scaring away any med schools from teaching the procedures and running out of normal practice any Ob/Gyn  willing to do it.

An abortion, for myself, would never be an option. But, occupational hazard requires me to know a lot about them... lol

farglebargle -> RE: Cuomo doubles down on pissing off the Right Wing... (1/22/2013 8:53:11 AM)

Well, this comes down to the issue of "do you believe there's a state's interest in a woman's uterus?", and similarly, "At what point does a woman become, herself, a slave to the State for the purposes of reproduction?".

But allowing a few people's morals to dictate what they many may or may not do, will never work.

But allowing a few people's morals to dictate what the many people may or may not do, has already worked for the few GLBT people. And the result, at least in our military, has been a drastic increase in same-sex physical assaults...primarily male-against-male.

mnottertail -> RE: Cuomo doubles down on pissing off the Right Wing... (1/22/2013 9:23:38 AM)

I am calling horseshit.  credible citations.

I too call horseshit. Let's see some documentation on this.

mnottertail -> RE: Cuomo doubles down on pissing off the Right Wing... (1/22/2013 9:29:44 AM)

It is all inferred.  Homosexual rapes weren't even recognized by the military until 1997.

They are being reported more, but there is no evidence of a greater amount of rapes.

He got it from a teabagger blog, which ran off the hook with a Newsweek article that said no such thing, but the teabbaggers infer as proof of something that isn't any proof at all.

LGTB .....

I dont have to be a part of that group to want them to have the same rights I do.

Polls indicate the majority agree with same sex marriages. They also seem to agree that DOMA is a bad law.

Not just "bad law" but un Constitutional too.
Let's hope the Court see's it that way ,seems to me that taking on two cases dealing with this issue would portend a favorable outcome.

While current law states that only a “duly licensed physician” may perform an abortion, this bill would allow any “licensed health care practitioner” to perform the procedure prior to viability. This dangerous and extreme change clearly puts women’s health at risk, and mirrors a national abortion strategy to permit non-doctors to perform abortions due to the declining number of physicians willing to do so.

Oh goody. Now doesn't THAT sound insane.

This means that a social worker or your CT tech could give you an abortion. Sign up for food stamps, an MRI on your knee and a D&C all in the same day at the same visit. Progress is great!

The depth of your ignorance on reality never ceases to amaze me. Just when I think you cant get anymore ignorant, you prove yet again at beating the odds!

A "...social worker or your CT tech..." is NOT a licensed health care practitioner, which you cited. How about you STUDY the concept before displaying your ignorance for all to see! So the abortion would be carried out by someone that would have had reasonable background, study, not to mention 'hands on experience' in performing the task. Whether they agree with 'Roe vs Wade' or not, ALL medical doctors (including health care practitioners) in the USA are trained in how to perform an abortion....SAEFLY. They have to know how to do such a think if needed to during some sort of an emergency.

Why do liberals all make it sound like pregnancy is something that simply happens out of thin air, and that the man and woman have absolutely NO control over it (unless someone else pays for it), has no idea how it happened, so now are entitled to kill it (which they also want someone else to pay for)?

Actually, many liberals know how the concept works. Given the knowledge base at current in the medical community (most of those medical doctors ARE Liberals), it would be known that the usual process for creating off-spring is through a male and female, but not limited to just that.

What amazes me is the depth of conservatives to not be able to consider the circumstances that might find the couple in such a perplexing place to be begin with. Most couples are not model examples like the Beavers from the 1950's tv show. Abortion is never something one does on a whim. Anyone that does should really have their head examined by a psychologist. Even a medical doctor would know enough to explain to someone considering the operation of the conditions and problems. But then, a medical doctor would be much better suited to understrand the possible health problems in having a child based on the mother to be's current health.

When you slam liberals, you forget that much of the scientific community. to which medical science is apart of, holds to many liberal concepts and ideas. Perhaps you should look up the definition of the words Liberal and Conservative. The first is more likely to give you options beyond abortion. The second is less likely to give any options altogether.
