I grew up in NZ. and if i could do it i would eradicate all feral introduced animals - mammals and otherwise. Domesticated animals - cats and dogs would be kept under control ie in the house, in a cage or enclosure capable of restraining them.
New Zealand has a very unique ecology which is complelely unable to cope with cats, rats, rabbits, australian opposums, stoats , weasels, deer, chamois and the like. There is no place or nich for them there. Feral animals not native to NZ destroy habitat to a point that the government instituted a shooting program for deer and a poisoning program for possums. That sounds harsh, but they were destroying the native flora and fauna.

Cats aren't any happier outside than inside - my three are all inside cats, and are very demanding and content animals.

Of course, if the government got rid of all the feral cats, and pet owners kept their little treasures inside, they would then have to do something major about the other introduced animals.

Such as the sheep? I'm given to believe that you have one or two sheep over there.

So he has a reasonable rationale for what he's saying, but I doubt he realises just how many women use cats as proxies for children. So I think he's up against it.

What about a bit of lateral think on this subject? Specifically, are there any cute indigenous species that might make good pets that could (at least partly) take the place of cats?

(Produce pictures, TAFKAA. This is your opportunity to show the hitherto unseen fluffy side of yourself. )

No idea if would make a good pet but what about the kiwi? Several of the species are in serious danger of extinction and they are pretty cute.

They are adorable -especially the chicks - but they are nocturnal, and like most birds would make terrible pets. and they are in danger of extinction because of the rats, cats, stoats etc etc destroying their habitat and eating them.

I'm going to do some research on NZ animals. I've realised I know about a fair number of Aussie creatures, but almost nothing about NZ ones. I don't think I've ever seen a nature doc that's focused on NZ. Just over the road from Oz, as it were, but a completely different kind of fauna. It's weird. No snakes, for instance - yet Oz is teeming with them.

Stoats are nasty little shits, aren't they? Here in the UK they'll take out anything, even creatures a lot bigger than them.

I've also heard of creatures called 'geeps' - the sterile offspring of sheep and goats that have gone wild and subsequently bonked one another. Or maybe that's Oz, again.

When i was a kid, i was sitting on a plank over the creek , reading. I saw three stoat/weasels playing chase up and down the bank. They would chase one, tag it and then turn around and run the other way. It was adorable.

pity they are such destructive little things.

I've just discovered here that bats are NZ's only surviving indigenous land mammal. That's so bizarre!

Yep - a purely bird ecosystem. Every niche filled by birds. therefore very vulnerable to the inroads made by mammals. *sigh*
I love bunnies, but they all need to die in NZ.

I understand that deer may not be indiginous to NZ, but they are to the US and in most places where they are, there are hunting laws specifically designed to make sure the herds don't overrun the place.  It's basically what deer do.

I don't normally post articles from the net, but this one was just to crazy for me not to.

It is actually a good suggestion. Anyone who introduces non-native species into a country is committing ecological warfare with the purpose of species extinction.

Cats of course arew only one of the non-native threats face by the New Zealand native species. Rats for example is another one.

Sheep and goats will on rare occasion mate but it is very rare for a pregnancy to result and even more rare for a the pregnancy to result in a live birth. The two species ae simply too distantly related for hybridization to work.

Geep is usually reserved for a lab creation (a goat-sheep chimera) where a sheep embryo is merged with a goat embryo and an animal is produced which has both sheep and goat cells mixed throutout the body.

yep and the american squirrels over here as well as the asian ladybirds over here are another two examples of that sad warfare

Well, I am happy to agree to disagree on that one

Whilst my birmans and my pepper girl, which is a bit of a scary lill fuzz but, could be kept inside, curry would go mental....right now he is more inside than usual as he dislikes the snow, but he has his also very wild moments in the nights at the moment which shows to me that he would display the same sad behaviour like other male cats I got to know from friends in the past which were kept inside....where their boys went up the walls and became very aggressive indeed...

I am not saying that it is not possible in general, however I did meet many male cats in my life which tore off the wallpapers due to not being allowed going outside and that's not what I am calling a happy life for the cat then either.

Though, that being said, as mentioned before, if I would live in a country like NZ I would ensure them a very large outside cattery as alternative....but am glad for mine, that they can roam outside when they wish to do so...

*Shudder* . . . that's just reminded me of a TV drama I once saw about a human/gorilla hybrid.

The American grey squirrels have pretty much beaten off our (much cuter) red squirrels here in the UK, apart from a few thinly-populated areas. Colonialist bastards. Meanwhile, parakeets are rife after some weird accident - they're all over Surrey now.
