Status: offline 		Yes...once in a while, Austin gets snow and ice. I remember in '96 there was a fierce icestorm and Bo was one of the few taxi drivers working the city. Made $400 a day, which got us into a 4-plex a couple of weeks later (we were living with a friend who was Lizard's godmother).

We have a colony of parrokeets here in Chicago and if they can handle our cold Austin is no problem.

As to the parrakeets, we have a colony of monk parrakeets here in chicago so once they get established they are going to thrive. There has been a lot of worry about them eating grain crops and becoming a nuisance species like they are in argentina but so far they just don't bree fast enough to do more than keep the population steady around here.

Shahar - what sort of parrots are they? just for interest sake - i have a couple of parrots and hate that they have to be inside.

cats on the other hand, if they don't ever go outside aren't missing out on anything. Birds miss out on flying. *sigh*

Status: offline 		There is, and has been since about 1965, a huge colony of rose-banded parakeets in Cologne. When Oldest was in the hospital recently, we could watch them through his window there.

As for cats not being happy if they are not allowed outside, and ending up aggressive and clawing and scratching at stuff. That is, in my opinion not a sign that they need to have access to the outdoors, but a sign that they are bored and need attention/playing/something to do. Our birds are worthy of protection, too and there are quite a few that are endangered.

Too many people get cats and believe that those animals are self-sufficient and only need food, water, and occasional scritches.
They need a good deal of attention, and they need options for play and occupation. Otherwise you end up with a aggressive cat, or a cat that shreds your stuff. Letting them outside is taking the easy way out, but it comes at a cost for your cat as well as for the local fauna.

Status: offline 		Black is just a color variant of the grey squirrel. We have them as well as the much rarer white (not albino) variant mixed into the population here in the US.

As to introduction of destructive species the grey squirrel is at least cute. Some damn fool introduced kudzu into the southern US and its taken over.

But I am also thankful that the wind is slowly changing when it comes to cats being allowed outdoors.
If it would only affect you and your cat, well fine, but the price is paid by other people, too.
Not only do I like the local birds and want to keep them, a random neighbours cat shitting in my garden, or childrens play area is not amusing.

We own cats, who live a happy life indoors.
One of them is a big male who came to us when his previous owners decided to re-home him, as they believed his destructive tendencies to be because of a need to be able to go outside.
Since he is living with us, and is getting his needs met, he has let go of his former bad habits, and is quite a contend indoor kitty.
While it does require more work than simply opening the door, it is more than worth it.

Humans may have deliberately introduced cats to New Zealand. Probably for a very good reason: wherever humans go so do rats and mice.

Since history began. It is a fact that rats and came with the very first sailors to find NZ. Kill all the feral cats and the rodent population will explode.

Kill all the rats and mice too? People have been trying to do that for millenia. It's not going to happen.

I fear that could be true. Rats, especially, have evolved along with humans. On the other hand, I don't think they have any serious predators, especially in NZ. I suspect that any number of cats would make little difference. It's only humans who could have even a chance of controlling them.
