I don't normally post articles from the net, but this one was just to crazy for me not to.

http://news.yahoo.com/nz-eradicate-pet-cats-purr-ish-thought-085642599.html

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Gareth Morgan has a simple dream: a New Zealand free of pet cats that threaten native birds. But the environmental advocate has triggered a claws-out backlash with his anti-feline campaign.
Morgan called on his countrymen Tuesday to make their current cat their last in order to save the nation's unique bird species. He set up a website, called Cats To Go, depicting a tiny kitten with red devil's horns. The opening line: "That little ball of fluff you own is a natural born killer."
He doesn't recommended people euthanize their current cats — "Not necessarily but that is an option" are the site's exact words — but rather neuter them and not replace them when they die. Morgan, an economist and well-known businessman, also suggests people keep cats indoors and that local governments make registration mandatory.

Morgan's campaign is not sitting well in a country that boasts one of the highest cat ownership rates in the world.

I know a lot of people don't like cats, but really? Get rid of all of them? Geez.

Get rid of them? No...keep them indoors and registered? I don't have a problem with that. Does New Zealand also have snakes? If so, those are threatening the birds too I'm sure. Get rid of those too and any other creature that kills birds.

I am a cat person but this guy does have a point.

Cats are hunters and wreak havoc on bird populations that are not evolved to deal with such, as is the case in New Zealand.

Typical governmental bureaucrat thinking he can save the world from 'sin'.

His just happens to be a cat.

Cats are killers, that is true. Binx, my daughter's cat, almost got herself a field mouse when I was down in Austin in December. Lizard was all gushing about a poor defenseless mouse. I was "Get that thing out of here!". Binx was only doing her job...

Maybe we should just get rid of all the people who don't spay and neuter, thus creating the over-population of cats that are threatening the birds...

Perhaps if he advocates neutering programs for the feral cats like they do here in several American cities. I know Fort Worth has such a program and the cats are tracked for scientific purposes.

Unfortunately birds have other predators as well....

other birds (eagles, hawks, and assorted birds of prey)

DOGS (yes, dogs!!!!)

reptiles, raccoons, fox, other birds, and assorted egg-snatchers

PEOPLE who hit the birds with their cars, destroy their habitats by erecting housing developments, spray/use pesticides and insecticides, pollute waterways, disturb nesting sites with recreational noise, the list goes on and on.

So if you TRULY want to eradicate the world of bird predators? You may as well destroy everything and everyone, and the world will truly be "for the birds."

That's a well known fact.

Doesn't need corroboration....it is what it is.

Or maybe you should become informed on the matter and learn that cats are a major killer of songbirds and that in places like New Zealand where many birds nest on the ground or on low limbs they are the major threat to native birds.

New Zealand has no native mammals and the only native reptiles are insect eaters. The only native bird of prey that kills other birds is critically endangered itself.

And there are places outside New Zealand where birds have other predators besides cats... a point I was making for the sake of those posters who live in the U.S.

I don't know where your hostility for my post stems from, but I assure you I am not ignorant of this issue.

I'm willing to bet that it would be stray and feral cats (no, they aren't mutually exclusive) are doing more damage than people's pets.

AMEN!

I also agree that cats should be indoors and/or contained for their own safety, as I've done here with a 'catiary' for my 3.

Look, if and when the New Zealanders start killing cats, they are going to trigger the full scale invasion of the alien cats that are masquerading as house cats.

Then we all be fucked.

MistressDarkArt I just love that "catiary!" When I buy a house again, I plan to do something similar.

Yes that catery is a good thing to have, there was a site on the internet that designed out door play areas for cats and large parrots, not together of course.

Here is a site that lists people who do that kind of stuff
