TheLilSquaw -> Needle Play Questions (2/5/2013 9:59:35 AM)

I've always been curious about needle play but have always shied away from it because I was always concerned about sanitary issues.

I admit lately a few posters and their photos have peeked that interest even more.

For those of you that do needle play, what draws you to it?

Cautionary tells you'd like to share?

More obvious question, how are the needles sterilized or are they before and after playing?

A curious mind wants to know.....

MstrDouglas -> RE: Needle Play Questions (2/5/2013 10:13:55 AM)

Well, first and formost, anyone that does not use sterilized/sanitary needles, does not respect the value of the person they are using them on.
Needles can be sterilized in different ways, the most accepted and surest way, is to autoclave them (high temp and steam), another way is to use alcohol, soak the needles in it.
As far as what draws me, personally, to it....I guess is the ability to not only decorate the slave, but also to inflict pain as a reminder that they are property. Mine to do with as I please.
My advise to you, is to make sure that anyone that is going to stick something ( be it needles, skerers, pins, or whatever), into your body, make sure that they use gloves, and that whatever they are using has been sterilized.

Thank you.

I knew about sterilizing using an autoclave, tattooist do that.

However, I wasn't sure how those who did needle play sanitized their needles. After all I know how expensive an autoclave machine can be.

This is actually why although I've been interested for years.
I've never taken it beyond that.

LadyPact -> RE: Needle Play Questions (2/5/2013 10:28:35 AM)

There is a beautiful aspect of needle play that a flogging or other such forms of sadism can not touch. As a top and using the needle as an extension of Myself, I literally get to be *inside* the person who is the receiver. I get to go places that almost no one else will ever get to be. Under the skin and just into the flesh. I get to watch that little sliver of metal invade the other person's body. Guide it at My design. Envision beauty. Create art.

Needles as sold for medical use are sterilized and should come so in the package. Don't take them out before play. They come that way from the manufacturer and are individually sealed. Needles are not to be reused as they become contaminated as soon as they puncture skin/hit the air. Piercers must always keep cellular structure, airborne contaminants, and blood born pathogens in mind. Just think of all of the nasty things that come from the sharing of needles! Would you want a needle used on you to draw blood, for example, at a doctor's office after it had been in somebody else? Throw them away in a bio-hazard container after play.

Temporary piercing, (which is what needle play really is) is rather quite simple. Wear gloves, sterilize the skin, hold the bevel at a certain angle, and go just under the epidermis. Learning good spacing and such for nice designs actually takes more time than learning the basics. Like anything else, start small and work your way up. Do just a few for your first try. See how you like different gauges (sizes) of needles. The hub of the needles can be different colors depending on size so you can make really pretty designs. Once needles are in, you can decorate them with ribbons, feathers, or decals for fun without contaminating the insertion spots.

I absolutely recommend a book called "Play Piercing" by Deborah Addington. Excellent background info on all of the basics.

I know I made this a really quick response, so if you have specific questions, just ask.

LP,

That is what draws me to needle play is to me there is a beauty and intimacy there. Your description of why you do it gave me butterflies.

So like tattoo needles only use the needles once then toss them?
That actually makes sense if that is the norm.
And actually that makes me more comfortable with the idea.

Is needle play something that you can practice on yourself or do to yourself or is it one of those things that needs to have a partner?

I'm sorry if these questions seem basic, like I said.
Although its been something I've been interested in I've never gone past a casual interest before.

Lately, it's become something I'd like to learn about and perhaps try.
And I am not naive enough to think that I can't learn from others.

Thank you for the book recommendation!

ForcedDecadence -> RE: Needle Play Questions (2/5/2013 12:45:08 PM)

What I've always found brings me to needles (which admittedly, I could stand to try more of) is a combination of the trust required to partake on either end, the fear, anxiety and subsequent satisfaction of the insertions and the simple beauty of metal and flesh.

I found many of my fears and worries assuaged by being present at a few scenes. Although pictures and videos can give you a decent idea of the flow of the experience, being able to touch and ask questions is a big part of learning any new skill (for both parties involved). Beyond that, I think everyone above covered everything else.

Have fun and be safe.

LadyPact -> RE: Needle Play Questions (2/5/2013 1:26:34 PM)

Thank you for the kind words about the description. I always feel that I come up short when I want to convey how I feel when experiencing this kind of play. The top space that I get from it is absolutely amazing.

Yes, I'm one who prefers to use a needle once and toss it when the play is concluded. Sure, you can clean and sterilize them which is great. The question then becomes how do you keep them sterilized until the next time you want to play? What if you want to engage in needle play at your local play party? How do you transport needles that aren't packaged? Not risks that I really want to take. They aren't that expensive, so just get a new box.

Before starting on sticking people, you might want to get a little practice on something that isn't going to get hurt. Just so you can see things like how much pressure on the needle actually makes the point go in and how little you have to push to move it through matter. Pig's feet are actually great for this as the skin density isn't too much different from ours. (It sounds funny, but it's actually true.) Of course, most people don't have access to real pig's feet, so we go to the next best idea. A thin skinned fruit with a soft inside, like a peach, will also work. It's not exact, but it gives you a pretty good idea and gives you something for those first few fumbles before going for something/one that actually goes "OW".

I have to admit, I've never practiced on Myself. I've always had people to practice on. I like getting the reactions from another person, even when it's very basic stuff. Needle bottoms can be just awesome as you can literally watch them slip into space, watch facial expressions, and get all kinds of feedback.

Okay, tech stuff first. Don't bother with an autoclave unless you are going to get into professional, perm piercings. Non-disposable needles can only run through skin about a dozen or so times before they become too dull and have to get tossed anyway. Stick with disposable needles and the cheapest route to get those is your Vet supply stores. A lot of places on-line will give free shipping with purchases over 40 or 50 bucks and buying in bulk will save you time and later expense. Also, you can easily find the most common lengths and guages so have a wide range of places to 'start'.

Personally, for a newbie, I would suggest 18 ga, 1.5 inch length as a good starter needle. It's not so thick that it's going to intimidate anyone but not so thin that it will be hard to pierce thicker places without bending and will be long enough to cap with a cork piece if you want to incorporate design elements (beading, other media etc.) but not so long as to be unwieldy. Easy to go up or down in ga. from there once you start getting into it and see where you're at and where you want to go. Other nice thing about disposables, is the colored caps denote different size ga so you can incorporate color into your designs as well and if you're like me, you'll end up adding feathers, painting wax, adding beads, leather thongs .. hell, sky's the limit!

If you are running hallow points with the purpose of tying off objects (bells, balls or fruits etc), I would suggest either fishing line or surgical thread. Yarn, other sorts of thread and things are colorful and pretty but linens can shred and if you run it through a hallow point, you can end up with thread trails embedding in the skin. Fishing line and surgical thread can both run through surgical wash without any damage to them so that can help (but not completely eliminate) risk of infection later on and.. no thread trails to worry about.

Why do I do it?

About 20 years or so ago I went to visit a friend in AZ. She was a member of APEX and the plan was go attend a piercing demo followed by a ritual piercing. The girl who was scheduled for the demo backed out at the last minute and I was asked to step into her place and be the demo dummy and as I had never been pierced before and it sounded like fun so I said yes! Having gone through a delrin tit caning the night before, I guess they thought I had the tits to handle it. lol

Well, I was hooked. It was the most amazing experience of my life and I became a student that day and never looked back. The energy in that room was palable during that demo - I think the Top had something like 50 or so clothespins on me (zippered) and crossed needles through both nipples each of which, in turn, was wrapped with long thing leather straps.. she was tugging on them and pulling me along and I was pulling back from the thongs. The more I pulled back, the more pain I felt and the BETTER it felt .. and I just started to move and dance and got lost in the beat of the conga drums and the energy coming from the audience (about 150 or so people I would guess). I remember Cleo bending her head to my ear and saying.. "Do what you want.." Dude.. i wanted to fucking die! I mean seriously.. that's what I wanted.. i wanted to die and touch the face of God and.. so I sort of did. I felt my head drop back and I just gave up the ghost and .. and, to get to die and touch the light of God.,. how can that not fucking rock! I went from being half naked on stage to existing in a place where I felt completely isolated but totally connected to the entire universe and every person in that room all at the same time. When she zipped off the first line of clothespins.. I didn't even feel it. I was completely out of my body and it wasn't until she tried to zip off the second set of pins and one of them stuck and it snapped me right back into my body and I felt the rest of the pins come off.. but no pain. I was way too high by then and went into this giddy, OMFG I can't believe that just happened sort of place.

It has a bita an effect on a girl. [:D]

In my experience, there are things you can get from piercing (and other forms of blood and flesh play) that creates a distinct energy that just can't be found elsewhere. It's got that rare combination of fascinating history, intimate and fluid invasion and of course, blood being the stuff of life itself, it's not only has it's own scent and flavor.. but even its own texture that you can't get from a take down or mind fuck (two of my other very favorite things!)

If you want to hit me up on the other side, I would be thrilled to discussion my passion and would be happy to exchange phone numbers or if you have iPad, we can Facetime or something. Let me know.. it's just an offer.. I promise not to stalk ya or anything. [:D]

eta: btw; It's wise to do an iodine patch test to make sure your bottom isn't allergic. No worries if they are, just stick with a surgical wash and that can solve the problem as much as you can solve sterilzation problems outside of a clean room.

Lana and little wonder are great folks to ask too. But you got some great answers here already.

This is a beautiful description. I've always enjoyed seeing pictures, but said it was not for me. After reading this, I could change my mind and am curious to how a person at the receiving end would describe it.

thishereboi -> RE: Needle Play Questions (2/5/2013 4:12:02 PM)

I love needle play although I am not sure why. Normally I am into more of a thuddy pain and needles are the opposite. Maybe it is just the idea of it. Strange thing is, I have always been afraid of shots and playing with needles hasn't changed that a bit. The people I have played with use disposable needles so cleaning them is not an issue. They come in sterilized packaging so that is not a problem either. There was a wonderful man who did a corsett down my back that was very pretty, although I was kinda bummed that I couldn't see it. I did get pics though. He also did some sutures on me and those were very intense.

I don't see why you wouldn't be able to practice on yourself if you wanted. You could sit down and practice on your legs. In one scene they put a needle in my upper thigh and one in the lower leg. Then when I was sitting down they tied a piece of dental floss from one needle to the other. At that point I could not stand up without pulling on the needles. A unique type of bondage without rope.

TenderTorment -> RE: Needle Play Questions (2/5/2013 4:23:23 PM)

Great thread OP, such a fascinating subject.

I'm not into needle play personally, but the way Lady P replied with such obvious passion and elegant wording was a joy to behold. I can appreciate the aesthetic value of it and I can grasp the intimacy it could bring but I have a dislike of needles, which is strange giving my passion for tattoo's.

Will watch this thread with interest and hopefully learn something.

**Edit to add....The pig feet idea is spot on, trainee tattooist's used to have to practice on something, and sometimes pig skin was recommended for it's similarity's to our own skin**

TheLilSquaw -> RE: Needle Play Questions (2/5/2013 4:38:56 PM)

LP,
I was thinking about pigs feet or a fruit to practice on.
Its what a friend of mine used when he was doing his tattoo apprenticeship.

And those are good points about reusing the needles, even if you can / do sterilize them after. How would you keep them sterile or transport them.

Bita,

Thank you for the tech stuff and suggestion about iodine patch testing.

How you got into is very similar to how I got into cutting.
I was asked to be a last minute demo dummy.
I got hooked.

I will def. hit you up on the other side. :)

K,
I think it was Kana who's photo I recently saw that rekindled my interest.

TenderTorment,
My best friend told me earlier today.
He isn't surprised I am interested in needle play, since I openly admit to loving how the tattoo needle feels. Lol

It's funny I almost didn't post my OP because it felt like a basic question.
Although it is, it is one that people are obviously passionate about.

I am thankful to everyone that shared and gave me input and advice.

All the needles I buy are from medical supply sites or from the local pharmacy. They are individually wrapped and arr for a one time usage and I don't unwrap the needles unless I am actually going to do a scene. I also buy individual packets of gauze that contain some sort of a sanitizing liquid which I use to wipe the area of a person's skin before I begin to pierce and I always use non latex gloves in case the person has an allergy to latex even if they don't realize it. The used needles and gauze are then placed in a sharps container which I then bring to the pharmacy for proper disposal as it is then considered a bio hazardous waste.

When I started out, I was a bottom and enjoyed the experience very much and the top then taught me the basics of needle play and the safety precautions I need to know, which then I practiced on him a few times and loved it. Since then I have had many opportunities for needle play as a bottom and top and both roles are equally fun. I like that you can add an element of pain to the scene by how you insert the needles or using the more common methods, one can create elaborate designs with the different needles and the subsequent weaving of colored thread or ribbon around the needles to create corsets, patterns etc.

Lynnxz -> RE: Needle Play Questions (2/5/2013 5:11:14 PM)

Here's why you don't reuse your needles, 'sterilized' or no.

I'd recommend a crash course in blood borne pathogens before you started stabbing around- couldn't hurt. Recapping (or corking) needles is generally frowned upon due to increased risk of sticking yourself, however I can understand why you'd want to do it for aesthetics. Just make sure you know exactly what you are getting into before you start.

Local pharmacy really?
Wow!
I shouldn't be surprised but for some reason I didn't even think about getting them there or turning them in there.

I keep non latex gloves in my first aid kit and toy bag anyways.
Same as individual gauze wraps.

Thanks!

You need your head in the right place, for sure.

UnholyBear -> RE: Needle Play Questions (2/5/2013 5:24:17 PM)

Here in Canada I know you can ask the pharmacist for them as they are the same hollow needles that diabetics buy to take their insulin. I like the medical websites as you can buy different sizes and gauges of needles and in bulk if you are so inclined.

Sharps containers are also available at drugstores and I usually get mine at the local HIV agency where I volunteer.

HarryVanWinkle -> RE: Needle Play Questions (2/5/2013 5:27:50 PM)

What first drew me to needle play was the fact that it scared me a bit and that the tops who I knew who were interested in doing it really knew their stuff well enough to not be afraid of my Hep C. I had a bit of a fetish for awhile for doing things that I was a little afraid of (as opposed to fucking terrified of).

Depending on just where they're used, they're often not very painful. Sometimes, I've had a few needles go in that I didn't feel at all. And, unlike clamps, the don't usually hurt worse coming out then going in. One thing I have found is that even when they aren't very painful, I always get a great endorphin rush from them. Which explains why they're one of my (many) favorite things.

For awhile, while I lived in Arizona, I got to doing so many butterfly board scenes that I was worried that people might start to think I was a one trick bottom.

If anybody isn't too squeemish to see the pictures, they're on my FL profile under the exact same name I use here.

{Edited to note that this was an FR written and posted before reading any of the other responses.}
