There were times when the 13th floor was simply a service floor, like another storage floor, or a floor where janitorial and maintenance items could be staged for upper floors.


Some years ago I worked at the housing department of one of London's local councils. It was the job of myself and the rest of my team to visit all the homes owned by the council to check on their quality. By far the larger number of No 13 houses in any given street, or No 13 flats in any given tower block, were empty. People didn't want to take them. Not even squatters wanted them.

Status: offline 		Pardon the ignorance, but why are people, in various nations it would appear, hesitant/unwilling to live/stay on the 13th floor? It's as good as any other, isn't it?

13th Birthday
13th Anniversary
13th Child
13th Award
13th Prize
etc.

Status: offline 		Since one of the posters currently in this thread informed me not so long ago that "the only info you are capable of looking up online are porn sites," I thought I might surprise him with my capabilities by looking up some info concerning what this thread is about. And here is what I found! : )

The fear of the number 13 actually has a phobia named for it: triskaidekaphobia (and I checked this spelling 3 times!) HA!

The number 13 seems to mostly be associated with groups of 13 people...
At the Last Supper, the 13th dinner guest was the one who betrayed Christ (as has been pointed out.)
In Norse mythology, 12 benevolent gods were gathered in a hall when the 13th god (Loki) entered, attacked the group, and killed the god Balder.
In ancient religion, Valhalla, the home of the gods had 12 guests at a feast, and a 13th, the god of Deceit, turned up uninvited.
I also came across the story of the Templar Knight (as has been pointed out.)
There was also a notation that Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt was totally phobic and took great pains to avoid hosting a meal for a group that size.

So instead of thinking there might be one, hard and steadfast reason, I found it totally depends on who one asks.

I knew about Loki killing Baldr (with mistletoe, as Frigga, Odin' wife, didn't think mistletoe would ever hurt anyone and did not make mistletoe vow not to harm Baldr. Also, Loki didn't technically kill Baldr, the blind-god Hodr did, through Loki's trickery), but I never knew he was the 13th guest! Sorry, I love the "old stories" told by various cultures. Thank you again for the info.
