Interesting. They declined the VIP passes, and $500 bucks. They don't appear (from the article, at least) to be suing for money, just principle.

Good for them.

I would agree. Be interesting to see how Disney plays this one out.

imdoingitagain -> RE: Racist Rabbit at Disneyland? (2/7/2013 10:39:07 PM)

Yes, this is one that could support since (according to the article) all the are asking for is an apology and termination of the employee. Both of which should be a no-brainer.

midmichiganguy -> RE: Racist Rabbit at Disneyland? (2/8/2013 4:44:41 AM)

So exercise free choice and get fired. I don't believe we know all sides of this story here. What if the kid was a sloppy mess from having food spilled over him? If you were in a white bunny outfit would you want to get that on you? Or what about if the kid was hacking and coughing and very sick? Maybe the person in the bunny outfit did not want to go home and lose work time because of fear of illness? Or maybe there is some element of truth to the racist allegations? Who completely knows? My point though is that there are an endless number of reasons why someone would choose not to hug someone else and not all of them have to do with race. Now imagine what would be said if the person in the bunny outfit was the same race as the person who did not get the hug and felt slighted by it. What then?

DomYngBlk -> RE: Racist Rabbit at Disneyland? (2/8/2013 4:52:29 AM)

Well addressing your last "imagine".......then do your fucking job. Your job as white bunny in disneyland is to keep the kids happy. Not doing it would be pretty stupid don't you think?

MissBlueangel -> RE: Racist Rabbit at Disneyland? (2/8/2013 5:01:05 AM)

As DYB said bunnikins gets paid to hug. So he should have

None of your points is valid.
The kid did not have spoiled food all over him.
The kid was not sick, and in all honesty, what parent would take their kid to a theme park if he was as ill as you are portraying?

I have heard some real whoppers of "what ifs" from my grandson, but these surpass even his wildest hypothesis.

The job is to make kids happy, easy job actually.
This person choose to ignore a kid because of color.

The person in the rabbit suit is an employee. There is no "free choice" Never been to Disney, have you.

http://wreg.com/2013/02/07/family-says-disneys-white-rabbit-is-racist/

Disney has a long reputation of sweeping such incidents under the rug with a quick pay off and a signed nondisclosure form. Good thing this family didnt take the offer.

TheLilSquaw -> RE: Racist Rabbit at Disneyland? (2/8/2013 5:44:39 AM)

The guy in the bunny suite, IMO has free choice.
In one sense....

Either do the job you where hired to do or quit.
I can't tell you how many times I have seen a mall Santa or Easter Bunny, lap a crying or messy kid.

Hell, I have seen Santa pissed on!

It's what you are being paid to do.
Interact with children and do so with a smile on your face.

midmichiganguy -> RE: Racist Rabbit at Disneyland? (2/8/2013 5:46:35 AM)

I work around kids all day long in my profession. You would be surprised how often parents take their sick kids out and about into the public or send them to school. If I see a kid hacking and coughing and they comes running up to me for a hug am I then a racist because I don't want to hug him back and risk infection? Sure I might hug the kid and turn my head and not breath in but does that make me racist because I am hesitant to do so?

I actually believe this was a racially motivated incident and I am all for prosecution of the person for it. My main point though was that none of us was present and none of us know 100 percent the circumstances around it. So for people to stand up and be righteously defensive about a situation that no one here was absolutely present for is quite hypocritical don't you think?

Has anyone here ever worked in the public around low income or homeless families? I have had children running around with yesterdays food on them and I have seen families who were hacking and coughing like they had the plague do so without regard to those they come in contact with. Not because they were being malicious or anything but simply because they did not know any better or they had no choice. Ask any bus driver for public schools about being sick. Ask any teacher who deals with children how often they get sick. So unless someone here has had similiar experiences as public sector workers dealing with low income, at-risk, and homeless populations then I suggest perhaps you should open your mind up a bit more and look at reality and realize that not everything is absolutely black and white.

I taught pre-k for years and I can count on 1 hand how often I got sick.
And I held, hugged and comforted sick children if they were in my class.
Hell, I've had children vomit on me.
Your point is what?

And other than when I taught in Palo-Alto most of the schools I worked at where low to middle class families.

You are trying to justify someone not doing the job they were paid for.
Interact with the children at the park.
PERIOD.

Yet, YOU are making excuses and trying to justify his actions by saying the kid might have been messy or sick ect.

What part of this guy didn't do his job don't YOU get??
There is no justification for it.
No what ifs make it go away..

ETA: You also made this lovely little statement.

At times many people do not want to hear of anything racist, it is hard for them to conact it and they
want to believe it had to be something else! I bet you anything he is white!
Please really see it what it isa racist white actor that can not hold his hate back until he is off from work! I saw the pictures I think I did
mention it in this post!

I understand what you mean! But think of this, as child I went to the circus and we were going
and I was so excited to be there and wow I could not wait for the clowns to come out!!! As a child I
can not begin to explain the joy I felt!

As we were going in, and I lived in an area that had both white children in m classroom! I did not grow
up with racist people around me so I did not know about hate as many kid today do feel and hear it so much!

So as the other child went ahead of us ( they were white and I did not see them as that ) saw someone to play with!
We came to the clown who was to check us in, I smiled at him and he looked at me an eight year child as if
he wanted to kill my sister and I right there!

I never forgot the evil look he gave us and I am frighten of clowns to this dat because of his actions!

You said you thought "oh what if the child was "messy and or sick, I wish it were this!

You may had not seen the pictures of mr. white rabbit, as he held all of the white children, it was a strange sight!
thsi black child saw him as his favorite character on aTV show, it hurt when anyone treats someone bad and it hurt
even more when it is a child!

He should be fired no question about it, it shows him hugging every white child but not oneofthe black children, he pull away
and would not let him touch at alL!

When someone holds their purse as you pass by, or they follow you in the stores as each and every stop we make it is silly!!!

I told a store person "you had better not be walking with me" she stopped!

Read the book called "black like me" it tells of a man who took pills to make his appearance to be like that of a "Black Male"
It will shock you as to how he learn who things really are! I am sorry but I do not know the name of the writer!

best regards
Mons

1. Typically, one bad behavior is indicative of another, so IF they were the type to try to bring their sick kid around a bunch of other people, they'd probably be asking for money or some other sort of compensation.
2. The offer of "hush money" is pretty good indicator of what went down.
Those two points and the entirety of this story trigger my 2+2 is 4 indicator to say it is a pretty safe bet to say you can know what happened and be "righteously defensive" about it.
I am honestly not sure what is hypocritical about it, though..?

LafayetteLady -> RE: Racist Rabbit at Disneyland? (2/8/2013 6:27:59 AM)

Here's the thing with the "not asking for money" angle. This would be a civil suit for personal injury of sorts. Lawyers take those on contingency, meaning they get a portion of the award. No attorney is going to take a case for an apology with no monetary award, unless the family is paying out of pocket. Few people have the funds for a lawsuit that gets them nothing but an apology, but saying that is all you want makes great headlines.

I'm not going to say the cast member in the rabbit suit was racist or not, and neither should anyone else. On this site, most of the people here are quick to tell OPs' in other sections that we don't know both sides of the story, why should here be any different?

Yes, racism exists, but every time a black person comes on the news saying they were the victim of racism, everyone tends to automatically agree without hearing both sides, and the fact is that it isn't always an act of racism.

ETA: The whole "hush" money thing is indicative of you not understanding how these companies work. Anything that happens, they try to do something to make the customer, or visitor in this case, happy. This comes in the form of free tickets or monetary compensation. I have had things happen to me at an amusement park due to my disability and was offered free tickets. I'm sure if I pushed the situation, a monetary compensation would have been offered. I took the tickets.

Thats what they get paid for... you dont have to hug someone to get their germs.

Are you now suggesting this family is low income or homeless?

Im an RN. That should be answer enough, but I will expand anyways. I see them all, from wealthy to the poorest. My job is to care for them. I dont get the choice of which patients to see, you dont get the choice, nor does the fella in the rabbit suit. Yep, sucks to get a cold from the public, you are gonna get it anyways. Rabbit guy/gal was hired to do a job. What makes it racist is the difference in how children were treated based upon their skin color.

I used to work at Disneyland. Costumes got peed on, threw up on, drinks poured onto... Disney has its own cleaning crew.

So dont give me the "might have seen sick/messy" excuse.

Fair enough and you do make valid points.
Believe me, I am not the type to automatically believe every cry of racism. I've seen the wolf cries too many times to do it.
I do believe this case for various reasons, though. The ones I've already stated as well as a gut feeling. (Something I tend to trust more than most other things)
However, I am big enough to admit that everything you said pretty much invalidates every point I made.

DiurnalVampire -> RE: Racist Rabbit at Disneyland? (2/8/2013 6:50:34 AM)

Having been to Disney many times, there is something else that is possible that no one has mentioned. The characters have scheduled visit times, and then they are ushered away. Once their time is up, their handlers often have to turn away children who want to have photos and hugs and the like to keep things on schedule. Regardless of the children in question, Disney is a business and in that business they keep schedules. If this family were trying after that time that the character is recalled, then the White Rabbit would have gone back into character
(explaining the "impatient" behavior, the White Rabbit when not seeing people is late for a very important date and acts it.") and left to alow the handlers to meet the next character on their way out and essentially change shifts. The most important thing about being a disney character at a park is not to break character. The Villains, when not in a meet and greet, are not huggy and cute, they will growl at the kids or act haughty. The White Rabbit is in a hurry. I think this may be a very major misunderstanding of how things work at Disney from a family that jumped to a complaint of racism right off.
