Thanks EsotericLady.

I'd reiterate to the OP that the idea isn't to get anyone's attention, scare them off, bluff them into leaving, or otherwise out-posture them. The idea is to get everyone you care about to safety, let the intruder(s) know that you've called the police, you have a gun, and you're willing to kill them if they force you to. Let them have your stuff, it's all replaceable anyway, right?

Don't wreck a whole lot of lives (yours, your family's, the intruder's family's, and yes, the intruder's) if you can avoid it in any way. Try to mentally prepare yourself as best you can ahead of time. If someone comes into your house, the situation will change more quickly than you'd think is possible, and once you pull the trigger, you absolutely cannot have a do-over.

Common sense in a gun thread? ;-)

If you will look around just at this thread, you will see it is filled with the whole, "shoot first because it's my house, and sort it out later."

Dogs are the best front line of home security, but they also require a long-term commitment of time and care.

I keep a Mossberg, and it comes in handy for the odd rattlesnake. They are less impressed by the sound of the action, than home intruders would be, though.

You know by the time you figure out how this thing works, the guys has taken everything including the kitchen sink...with the help of the watch dogs....

Watchdog in the night,
I never chained you ,
Watchdog in the night,
I'd always trained you,
to protect my house,
until the night was thruuuuuuuu.

Then those burglers came,
you didn't mind it,
they were after loot,
you helped them find it,
diamond rings and furs,
you quickly led them tooooooooooo.

Watchdog in the night,
A stupid beagle you were -
Watchdog in the night,
But later on when I
returned to my poor home -
how your jaws did foam......

You became a snapping dog,
A fearless crazy yapping dog.....
Whenever Im in sight
I don't remember.....lalalalala I don't remember lalalalala
My watchdog in. the. nightttttttttt.

I find it funny, on other threads the was a study, made on people who use guns in self defense...interesting is that most crimes the gun is used by the defender is burglary, almost half of those defenders with a gun did not believe anyone was in danger. Only about 15% of the committing a crime will shot, 24% of the defenders will shoot, of that only 4% of the defenders will hit their target...I always keep wondering where did the other 96% of the rounds go.....

I'm concerned with the op having a gun in his home is that his many of his previous posts have shown him to be a bitter, angry man. Sorry dude but if you don't believe me, please go back and read your own comments in many, many other threads.

Anyway, so back to my concern, I have a feeling that he would be the type to shoot without any thought whatsoever because he's "protecting" his home only to find out that it wasn't exactly what he thought and now a life is gone because he chose to be the angry man who thinks everyone is out to get him.

This goes back to my view of mental stability and owning a gun.

Wow, now that's tacticool! It's pretty sad when the optics outweigh the gun.

I only ever kept a shotgun in the house for home defense for a few months, a few years back. We had an arsonist in our town going around at night setting fire to people's porches and front doors. Almost 20 homes were burned, and everyone was pretty terrified. So for a few weeks I spent every night barely sleeping on the couch. Once arrests were made, and no new fires set, I gave it back to my brother.

Studies have proven that 92.3% of statistics are made up on the spot.

17 studies to be exact.

If you go with a handgun, consider frangible ammo like Glaser Safety Slugs.
They deliver an excellent amount of energy on target but they won't overpenetrate and endanger your neighbors and/or friendlies in the next room.

Yup, although at this point if you can find any ammo except .38 special and .380, you're ahead of the curve.

Here, they teach you to shoot first ask questions later. They are very adamant that you assume anyone in your house, that should not be there, does have the intent to cause bodily harm and that you have no time to determine whether or not there is an actual physical threat.
They also make it very clear that you should not use a gun against an intrusion if you cannot fathom the idea of killing someone.
Me? I'd do anything to protect my children. And while they teach you to stay put and not seek out an intruder, our house is designed in such a way that is a little difficult.

We have a Boxer as our first line of defense, mostly as a warning alarm to us.
We've chosen handguns and bullets that will not blow a hole in the wall because of our children.

You already have the report you posted it, or don't you remember.
