I hope you guys don't mind me using you all for ideas again.

First off, I'm trying to put together a hospital survival kit for the wife of my friend with cancer. Something she can keep in the car to take care of her needs when they have to go in for short notice or have long waits. What should I put in it?

So far I have:
- spare phone charger
- Neck pillow, eye mask, and ear plugs
- hairbrush, dry shampoo, bobbles, deodorant, freshen-up wipes, toothbrush and toothpaste
- bag of change for parking/vending machines
- small snacks
- a deck of cards and a very small crossword book
- a notepad and pen
- some little encouraging notes

did I miss anything obvious?

Secondly: I'm writing to a little girl who is currently under infection control procedures as she's about to have a transplant. I've made up a folder of puzzles, stories, and colouring pages and laminated them so they can be cleaned and I'm sending them with some dry-wipe markers. I'm also making her some laminated paper dress-up dolls with magnets. Any other ideas for easy to post things that she can do whilst stuck in bed? I'm not certain what I can and can't send with the restrictions and I'm hoping someone can shed some light. I know anything fluffy/cuddly is out and anything paper has to be laminated.

Thank you, kind people.

Athena, you are just so sweet!

For the first, may I suggest a stack of magazines, some hand lotion, maybe a beginner's craft kit--like needlepoint or crochet?

For the second, beads for stringing can easily be cleaned. You could pick up the plastic cord for stringing--it comes in a lot of colors.

Home made "anything" in the food line if the hospital allows.  Most often their food sucks.

If it were a friend of mine I'd take my portable dvd player in with one of her favorite light hearted comedies and watch w/ her.  Hospital stays, especially during the day, are often lonely during the day.

A magazine having to do w/ one of her interests..........cooking, gardening, biking, etc................

Just some thoughts :)  Hope this was somewhat of a help.

Thank you so much for the suggestions so far.

I'm not sure that I am allowed to send food to either of them whilst inside the hospital, which is a shame because my chocolate brownies are my go-to cheer up gift.

The plastic beads and string is a stroke of genius, thank you, she's almost six so about the perfect age for that type of activity.

Unfortunately visits in person are out of the question because the adults are a distance away and the little girl I don't know personally, I'm doing this through a charity pen-pal thingy.

A good hairbrush. I was in the hospital for a bit, and what enraged me the most, besides not being able to speak, was the impotent little plastic comb they gave me. The teeth snapped and snarled in my hair- eventually one of the techs (bless her) went and BOUGHT me a brush.

For the older female, a trial size of one of her favorite perfumes.
And perhaps, if it can be done, a small framed photo of her loved ones?

ETA: Athena,
I think this is very sweet. I love the idea of this kind of charity pen pal thing.

- mints or gum
- lotion (hand and foot)
- books
- nail clippers
- mouth wash

For the little girl.
- word searches
- picture finds
- how to draw pages (i have links if you would like them)
- handwriting sheets
- matching games

All of those I have laminated and reused.

- stickers and sticker books

Mints! Good thinking. I can't believe I forgot about mints.

I'd love the link to the drawing page thank you.

I do have a bunch of stickers but I didn't know if they would be against the rules since you can't really wash them down?

Thanks everyone, keep 'em coming!

Here are 2 of the sites that have how to drawing things on them that I use.
They also have tons of other FREE printable pages for kids to do.
All of which can be easily laminated.

School Express

Activity Village

As far as the stickers.
I have laminated stickers before.
With the backing on them.
Attached velcro to the back and put velcro in the laminated sticker book.
So they have options of where to place the sticker and can take them off and reuse them.

ETA: Depending on how old the little girl is. You could always laminate age appropriate learning pages as well. That she can use the dry eraser maker on.

I realized really fast how much children miss things, little things when hospitalized.
Even school.

I have many other sites like the ones above if you would like more. Lol

A small piece of advice: I would go with unscented items. Chemo and radiation makes people extremely nauseous and you wouldn't want something that is on her skin to trigger a bout of vomiting.

Stores like Rite Aid and Kmart often have GIANT STUFFED ANIMALS...modern ones are very squishy and if you squeeze reeeeeally hard (or use a SpaceBag) you can get a giant stuffy into a low-rate shipping box at the post office. I mail quite a few of them out this way.
Barbie Dolls (with additional clothing sets) are another option.

1) hospital rooms are small. The nurses would rage, and your giant PITA would be tossed out.

2) like the velveteen rabbit, plushy things are excellent cootie carriers, and are not usually allowed for patients in reverse isolation.

Chemo killed my mom's sense of taste while she was receiving treatment and used hot sauce on everything. And she wasn't a hot sauce person before chemo. It helped kill the metallic taste she experienced.

For the little girl, maybe a battery-operated night light that shines stars onto the ceiling. Even as an adult, hospitals creep me out at night. Legos are pretty great, too. I usually take a small bag of them when we go somewhere.

A thought, for the woman going through chemo.
Why not place "vomit bags" in her bag?
I know it sounds gross, but when going through chemo a lot of people get nauseous.
