Due to the climate, Texas has two colors, green (for about 4 to6 weeks) and brown the rest of the year.

Like it really matters. Florida is blue but has nothing and sends almost nothing but red to the state and national capitols. It's called politicians picking the own voters.

Of course it is starting to turn blue, you have people fleeing the socialist paradises of California for Texas. They bring their failed politics and policies with them that rendered their state undesirable and try them again. It's happening all over the country. The days of self-reliant successful people are going the way of the Dodo thanks to the welfare state because poor people tend to vote democrat. The Republicans need to get on the hand-out wagon "yes you've done nothing with your life to justify your existence but lets give you a ton of money for being worthless unproductive trash." The Republicans need to accept that criminals are voters and bring in the illegal aliens to legal citizenship.

We'll be going the way of France, Italy, and Greece in not too long. I just hope society collapses soon and after a great die off, it can be rebuilt right.

Hey, let's keep wall street out of this ok ?

Yes people will go to work, work that is, painful as it might be going to Texas of all places and thanks to the 4 military (govt.) expansions going on and oil (from Canada) going to Houston...a 'govt.' proclaimed 'free trade' i.e., tax free zone. Isn't that precious ?

And you thought there was some other magic reason for this blue migration and even in the face of Texas being one of the largest state recipients of and drinkers at the federal trough.

See how easy it is to be a self-reliant [sic] 'redstater' when the feds are paying the freight and tax laws bring in the greedy ?

Are you still claiming that the poor vote overwhelmingly democrat?

Did I claim anything? No. I summed up a table in a census document that described poverty levels by state. If you don't like the answer you need to complain to either Microsoft of the US government.

The additional information was also not mine but the link is present and I did find the relevant NPR poll mentioned. How depressing that attempts to bring in some sort of factual basis for this conversation are handled that way. Have another sip of blue koolaid. It's good for you (said the politician).

GotSteel said: *Sigh* these conversations tend to make more sense when people don't tell the other person what their position is.
Yup. That's because you cannot debate ideology. By it's very nature it is taken as an article of faith. You can debate issues but not ideology. Online in general it's hard to get anywhere with this stuff because of the same old anonymity problems... people become asshats when they are anonymous.

The rich 'are not like you and me.' They don't need to vote for candidates. They buy the vote of whatever candidate is already there and is selling.

Voting before elections is getting far to speculative and we know how risk-averse the capitalist is.

Strange as it is, the panhandle is now white. Glad I didn't go there, I prefer Canada. Oh wait...?

I may vote for Chris Christy which makes you full of it......

You`re the one who made the comment......can`t deal?

Christie is a centrist and well qualified which is why the RNC will make damn sure he has no chance.

Oh I agree, can't nominate somebody that might actually win. Problem is of course, why would he win ? Maybe because he'd finally, finally lower corporate taxes...again. Or, he'd finally make capital gains tax...ZERO.

How about a little more 'patriotism' in our patriot act. How about a little more security in our Homeland Security act ?

We all know it will be about money, taxes, govt. spending on the poor who have paid in while increasing govt. spending on our various the wars, the rich (wall street) and the corporation...who haven't.

There is little if anything left to debate that has any real meaning other than those few overriding issues.

Same thing happened to New Hampshire, the "Live Free Or Die" state. Liberal/progressive socialists deserted the social justice/wealth equality "paradise" they created in Massachusetts and took their failed policies and corrupt politics with them to New Hamshire.

That must be why New Hampshire is in the top 10 (8th) for best educated states http://www.foxbusiness.com/personal-finance/2012/10/15/americas-best-and-worst-educated-states/

It also seems to be in the top 10 (6th) for per capita income. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._states_by_income

Yup, absolute failure. [8|]

poor people tend to vote democrat.

I'm going to disagree with that statement.

Look at states by income and compare it with how each state voted.
You will see that the poorer states especially in the south are solid red.

A social services agency rents space from me in my building here. I have yet to see a car pull into the parking lot with an Obama sticker on it. They overwhelmingly vote Republican as they suck on the taxpayer's teat.

You want to see Obama stickers on cars visiting the social services office? Come to Detroit for a weekend. I can show you plenty.

My city, Rockville MD, is overwhelmingly liberal and overwhelmingly voted for Obama, twice, but I hardly ever see a car with an Obama sticker on it. They overwhelmingly hide supporting Democrats as they suck on the taxpayer's teat.

mnottertail -> RE: Battleground Texas....Turning Texas Blue...... (2/28/2013 11:04:57 AM)

Well, anyone who lives in Rockville Maryland has sucked on the government tit.  Rockville Maryland is a welfare patient town, they are communists there.

But Rockville, Maryland isn't in Texas.

I'm going to disagree with that statement.

Well, if you want to look at number of poor by state what you find is as follows (from the US Census):

	       Total	Total Poor Perc Poor
Red States 28 578973 16.07%
Blue States 23 494813 19.57%

For more information (not validated by me this time) at the individual level something like 70% of welfare recipients vote democratic. Among non-welfare recipients it's 50/50.

There is much to be interpreted from these numbers and depending on which glasses you look with you see one answer or the other.

Im not seeing those numbers in your first link.

And the second link, 2004 - 2007 numbers. I would hazard a guess that those numbers have changed drastically since.

There are, however, numbers which require no interpretation at all.

The single most significant statistic for predicting the Republican/Democrat split in every state in the Union in every Presidential election since and including the 2000 election has been the average number of years married for white women between the ages of 18 and 44 on the 2000 U.S. Census.

It was an honest post with information showing you how comparing two cities with almost opposite demographics is like comparing apples to oranges.

Snark requires sarcasm. Do you miss mine?

Happy White Married People Vote Republican

The Wikipedia entry reviewing the author's career states in part:

Sailer's analyses have been cited by newspapers such as The Washington Times,[14] The New York Times,[15] the San Francisco Chronicle and The Times of London.[16][17] He has been featured as a guest on The Political Cesspool.[18]

Sailer's January 2003 article "Cousin Marriage Conundrum", published in The American Conservative, argued that nationbuilding in Iraq would likely fail because of the high degree of consanguinity among Iraqis due to the common practice of cousin marriage. This article has been republished in The Best American Science and Nature Writing 2004, and in One World, Many Cultures.

After the 2004 US election, Sailer discovered a very strong correlation between voting patterns and fertility rates. He described the fertility link in an article in The American Conservative: "Among the 50 states plus Washington, D.C., white total fertility correlates at a remarkably strong 0.86 level with Bush’s percentage of the 2004 vote. (In 2000, the correlation was 0.85.)"[19] Writing in the New York Times, pundit David Brooks referred to this article as showing the "surprising political correlations" of what he dubbed "natalism".[20]

Sailer later discovered a slightly stronger correlation between marriage rates and voting, and dubbed his theory of modern American voting as "Affordable Family Formation": "a state’s voting proclivities are now dominated by the relative presence or absence of affordable family formation."[21] The correlation between home prices, marriage rates, and voting was verified by George Hawley at the University of Houston, using county-level data for the 2000 election.[22]

On the other side of the ledger, he's been called a racist by Media Matters and the Southern Poverty Law Center for an egregious statement that appeared in a column entitled "Racial Reality And The New Orleans Nightmare." I won't quote it here, but the point may bear making that the Neo-Nazi types don't like him much either: He scorns White Nationalism as being "worse than a crime."

That all aside, his marriage-duration metric surprised me at first. But on reflection, it does seem to make sense that people in stable long-standing marriages would be likely to favor the "family values" theme that Republicans push, and that the GOP would enjoy an advantage in states where there are more of them rather than less.
