ORIGINAL: njlauren It is funny how in this day and age one of the biggest issues trans folks (at least M to F's) face is over restrooms. There is so much hysteria around them, and quite honestly, it is pathetic, because the implication is that if someone with male genitals presenting as female goes into a women's restroom that they are on the prowl for sex. Some of the worst offenders are gay women, I wonder how they would feel if straight women complained if some butch female went into a women's room when they are there, after all, aren't butch women sexual predators, too? (Hopefully people get my point). It is automatically saying that if you happen to unfortunately have male genitals, you are going to be leering at women or worse going to rape them, and that is pathetic. Many women have been so screwed up with they way they perceive sex and sexuality that many of them seem to be walking neuroses. When I started coming out at work, it was one of the first things HR dealt with (if I had gone FT at work, if the position hadn't of ended, there was an 'executive washroom' with a single toilet in it).I told the woman in HR, who was sympathetic, that you go into the loo to do your business, you wash your hands,, check your hair and clothing and get out.....it isn't exactly a social gathering place. A trans woman was arrested several years ago in NYC for using a woman's room at Grand Central Station (brave person, let me tell ya, those toilets are horrible). some Irish Catholic shithead decided it was illegal and arrested her, even though both NYC and NY State have laws protecting trans people from that kind of discrimination (sad to say, the fucker wasn't thrown off the force). We have such a long way to go when people feel threatened by a 6 year old girl identified trans person. Women's rooms have stalls, and as far as I know, women don't go around naked, so WTF? The only thing Squirrels need is a shot of rock salt in their ass, they are fresh, and I just won a major battle with them, after they invaded my attic and caused havoc......worse part was, had to use premium peanut butter, they sneered at the discount stuff I used in the humane trap I have. First, I'd like to thank you and the others for their contributions so far. I admit that I am not the most up to date regarding how these determinations are made. Even in the article two different states (Maine and New York) have two completely different policies. In this particular situation, currently, this is a six year old. To the best of My knowledge, there are a number of years before surgery is even a possibility. That means that the school district's policy has to look at all of the years until that happens. I can't honestly say that I believe Coy's Mother's statement to the press that there had been no complaints. She may not have been apprised of such complaints, but I don't believe they were non-existent. If there hadn't been, the school wouldn't have changed it's policy regarding Coy. I have this sneaking suspicion that Mom doesn't want Coy in the boy's restroom because there is a concern of the way the other boy's will treat Coy while using the facilities. (Keep in mind, these kids won't always be in the first grade.) There are a number of schools at the junior high level that don't have doors on stalls to reduce things like smoking and such. A faculty member can't be posted on guard to prevent Coy being picked on by other kids. When I heard the first blip on this story, My immediate answer was for Coy to use the unisex bathroom or the one in the teacher's lounge. I'm not sure why this isn't an adequate solution. According to the article the school said she could use the boys room, the unisex room or the nurses office, but apparently the parents didn't think that was a good enough solution. I feel sorry for the kid. Before this happened I doubt most of the kids in the school knew she was born male, but after the publicity and interviews they will and I think that will just increase the chance that she will be bullied. And I know I will probably catch flack for this, but I have a problem believing that a 5 year old was really having this kind of gender issue unless the parents had suggested it to her first.
