Please at least call an Emergency Room and talk to a nurse.

Please do not suggest that to anyone.  Hospital staff in the US are not supposed to dispense medical advice over a telephone for legal reasons

Great idea Brightspot... here it is easy to forget that people overseas don't have the almost inbred knowledge about sun burn. Most Aussies and families deal with this from when they were kids and often on a daily basis unless it is too cold to be outside in anything less than a thermal suit or it's pissing with rain like it is here now (Nothing in the catchments sop the official  drought continues).. The point is Aussie kids tend to grow up in the sun so we are as a Nation better educated in such things....

Removed because of the ignorance of individuals on this site.  Good luck with the sunburn; hope the poor girl got a chance to see the advice before I took it down.

Don't tell their risk management department that!  The individual in question would be strung from a tree and non-consensually flogged.  Seriously, most emergency departments even have voice prompts that clearly state that staff is prohibited from dispensing medical advice over the phone.  There's been a few fairly major suits from folks dying at home because they were told to treat rather than come in and be checked out.

Dear kiska,

Lass, please do go to the emergency room without delay.  You are a lovely lady and so many individuals are worried about your welfare.

Once you are seen, do tell us how you are.

Submitted with great concern,

Well where I come from it is certainly okay to call an ER and talk to a nurse to explain your situation and get advice on whether you should come into the ER or not.
I don't recall stating she should call the ER to get specific medical advice.

The biggest concern with heat emergencies is high temperatures cause the brain to suffer an anoxic injury, either from the temps or the subsequent metabolic disorders.

First and foremost -- if you are having dizziness, nausea, profound headache, blurry vision, vomiting or syncope (passing out), it's time for you to call 911 and go to the hospital immediately.  A paramedic unit will have intravenous solutions that can rehydrate you from the inside until the hospital can cool your core temperature.  If the burns are bad (and it sounds like they are), the ER doc can prescribe you Silvadene cream to apply.

If you're not imminently ill, take your actual temperature.  Anything over 104 from sun exposure warrants a trip to the emergency room.  If it's anything below 104, apply ice packs to your pulse points -- that would be wrists, armpits, nape of the neck, groin and backs of knees.  Bags of frozen vegetables, believe it or not, work the best.

Lukewarm showers...tepid water will help cool your core temperature down plus bring some relief to the damaged tissue.

Hydrate yourself -- water is the best, also electrolyte-containing beverages.  Avoid carbonation and alcohol.

Take an analgesic -- tylenol first, or if in the absence of that, an NSAID like motrin or naproxen.  For everything but naprosyn, 2 caps every 6 hours should work wonders for your discomfort level.

For the first 24 hours, I would leave the skin dry unless you have an aloe vera gel (or arnica gel would work too.)  Applying cool moist towels might bring you some relief as well -- wet them and keep them in the fridge, or quick-cool them in the freezer.

After you're sure that there are no blisters (that need to be kept clean and dry) and you're out of the woods as far as your temperature is concerned, then the biggest task is keeping that skin hydrated -- applying lotion like it's going out of style will become your new job!

But you seem to find it okay to give medical advice over the internet.

I agree that you should at least call a Doctor/Nurse get some advice.  Here is something my Grandfather used to put on me when i got a burn.  Milk.
Soak a cloth in Milk and apply it to your skin.  It takes the sting out.

And clearly you're too busy trying to be right to care about the advice that was given.  Given that I'm not a doctor or a nurse in an ED governed by a RM department, I thought I'd help out.  I only hope the lass had the chance to see what I said before I removed it.  Happy now?

If ever I doubted my decision to stop tanning in my late teens, here is the reminder I needed to stay the course and keep playing it pale.  My best goth friend and I have noted that we look younger than most of our peers, so the perks just keep on coming.  Best of luck in recovering and shunning the sun henceforth.  May you be sheltered by shadow 'neath the silent beat of bat wings evermore.

My Mom got a burn like that once.  She got skin cancer from it.  I'm not joking.  Lots of surgery later (removal of the resulting moles mostly) and she's fortunately fine, but it was a close call.  I'd recommend going to the doctor.  They should be able to at least give you a burn cream that will help the healing process, because trust me, you're going to blister and it's going to suck.  I'm a pasty white girl myself, and there's nothing more unpleasant than a bad sunburn.

OK ... I didn't go to the ER ... I know, everyone wants me to and it would probably be better if I did go, but due to circumstances right now, I can't. Its just not an option ...

With that said, I'm ok. It hurts ... Its uncomfortable ... But I'm ok. I didn't have a fever or dizzyness. I was dehydrated and my boyfriend about kicked my butt because I'd also forgotten to eat today so he made sure I had water, tea with sugar, some pineapple chunks and a small bowl of hamburger helper. (He cooked tonight ... He's really not a jerk, circumstances are just messed up right now.) Thank god he went to bed finally because I think I'd have popped if he'd stayed up much longer and found anything else to shove down my throat. LOL

I'm still searching for painkillers .. I get headaches often so we usually have something around but it looks like I might be out ... The headaches are a common thing for me. They have been since I was a child. I've had *that* checked out several times. They can never figure out what it is so they just give me painkillers and send me home. I think I was typing badly because of the lack of water and food in my system compounded with the sunburn.

I was stupid. I've learned my lesson. Thank you, all of you, for the advice and simply caring ... I feel like a complete bonehead right now and I think its safe to say I'll never spend another day by the pool again.

OK... I will say it since no one else has. What kind of a dolt is your boyfriend that he won't take you to a doctor or an emergency room? This is serious and should not be trifled with.

I once had second degree burns on my back from the sun. I still have a scar where the one blister that was the size of a softball was. I was terribly sick and I got to a doctor instantly once it was discovered (I knew I had sunburn but no one knew how bad).

I am not afraid to go out in the sun, but I damn sure avoid it whenever I can. If you are ever on the beach and you see a guy come by fully clothed with massive amounts of sunscreen on, toting an umbrella and carrying a very light jacket, stop me and say Hello.

I know you don't think your boyfriend is a jerk and I am not really saying that he is... it is just stupidity to treat someone with that sort of disregard for their health and well being.

Gawd ... I almost wish I could!

After over 5 years as a pale white gothy girlie, I decided to take up a friend's suggestion and hang out by the pool. She said she'd meet me around 10 so I got there at 9:30 and made myself comfortable.

She didn't arrive until 1 pm ... I started to feel pain at 2 and finally told her I was sorry but I had to leave ... This was 2:30 ... She asked me why and I said my head hurt and I could feel my skin burning, I needed to get out of the sun. It took me half an hour to walk home.

I took a shower to wash the chlorine out of my hair and noticed my skin looked REALLY red ... Figured, oh great, I got a sun burn, stupid me. I curled up to take a nap and now my skin is more purple than red ... It hurts so bad, oh god and my headache is worse.

I don't believe its sun poisoning. My nephew had that several years ago and I don't have any blisters like he had. I am miserable however and have nothing to treat this. I don't even know how to begin to treat this. I avoid the sun like the plague .. Ugh, it hurts ... I want to bury myself in a tub full of ice but somehow I think that would be a bad idea.

I'm like ... cajun style kiska!

This is the very reason I like my subs/slaves in their natural skin tones.  If you were meant to be brown skinned GOD would have made you with brown skin.  I know, I know  easy for me to say....

KISKA, I hope that you have taken the advice of these good people and RAN, NOT walked to the HOSPITAL EMERGENCY ROOM.  Sun Burns like any other burn are potentially health/life threatening.  This is not something to complain/whine or think about.  It is a necessity that you keep your body hydrated and cool.  The HOSPITAL is the best place for you to be.  Get to steppin if you haven't already.

Gauge,

I agree and sympathize with you at the same time.

I used to burn really badly as a child ( I've learned better since then) but I have some scarring from blisters as well. Mostly mine are on my shoulders from one summer spent basically at the lake.

I had literal blisters inside of blisters, where one would pop and another would form. The sad thing about this is I burned through a gauze shirt. I didnt even realize I was as badly burnt as I was untill the following morning when I woke and went to get out of bed. Over the course of the night I had blisters develop over my entire back and the tops of my shoulders down to the neckline of the suit I had worn the day before. All of the blisters on my back had popped and due to the liquid drying overnight when I slept I was literally stuck to the bedsheets the next morning.

My mom took me to the ER still wrapped in the sheets because I wouldnt allow anyone to pull it off. They stuck me in a cold bath and literally peeled the sheet and skin off of my shoulders and back. OUCH....

To the OP, fair skin is never anything to be ashamed of, many of us have it.... care for it gently and stay out of the sun. Skin cancer is on the rise due to unsafe exposure to the sun. Severe burns are definately nothing to play with and just because its a sunburn, do not look at it just as a sunburn. The sun can cause as nasty of a burn as touching a hot pan on the stove.

Stay as hydrated as possible until you heal, when it blisters do your best to not pop them, the fluid contained inside of the blisters are what keeps the layers of skin underneath moist and protected from infections. If they pop or I should say when because no matter how careful you are they pop there is a really good ointment on the market now that is used specifically for burns called Aquaphor. This is the same ointment used in burn wards at the hospitals, its soaked into special gauze that will not stick to an open burn wound and allows for bacitracin ointment to be placed and held in place effectively ( although I dont think you can get the aquaphor gauze without a script but you can get the tubs or tubes ( depending on which size you want) at most local drug stores. Pick yourself up some gauze pads and some aquaphore and a good sized tube of bacitracin ointment so that when the blisetrs pop you can avoid any kind of further damage to the skin through infections. It will also help to keep any scarring from the blistering to a minimum.

Oh and another thing, this is going to sound nuts at first.... but pick up a tube of preperation H too, because if you burned deeply you'll end up with a feeling of little spiders crawling all over your skin, from the reactions of the nerve endings, this usually happens after about the third day or so into a nasty sunburn, and the preperation H helps get rid of that. Otherwise you end up with a creepy, crawly, itchy, funky feeling that will drive you bugs.

I'm really not sure what to say ... My boyfriend isn't a dolt or a jerk. Neither of us have insurance and neither us can afford a trip to the ER ... He *HAS* to work ... I don't have family nearby and my friends have their own lives. I've had a worse sunburn before ... Yeah, it sucks but its life. All I can do now is deal with it.

Do I have a high risk of suncancer? Yeah ... But hell I got that when I was a kid before anyone knew suncancer was such a big deal so I'm going to deal with that if it comes to me ... I'm treating this as best I can and I've gotten some really helpful advice from people here.

Mostly right now I'd kill for a tylenol ...
