But you seem to find it okay to give medical advice over the internet.

*Brightspot

And clearly you're too busy trying to be right to care about the advice that was given.  Given that I'm not a doctor or a nurse in an ED governed by a RM department, I thought I'd help out.  I only hope the lass had the chance to see what I said before I removed it.  Happy now?

You tell me not to give advice to her to call an ER to see what action she should take, making the mistake I was telling her to make a call to the ER to get specific medical advice because it was illegal for ER staff to do so.. I simply stated that was not my intention. Then you say you deleted your message because of ignorant people on the boards. If you want to call me ignorant just say it to me, but no you took the sideways way because you knew it was wrong to give medical advice over the internet especially after stating it was wrong for ER staff to do it for legal reasons, now who looks like the ignorant one.

No I don't need to spend my time trying to be right but when someone makes statements to the effect my advice was wrong and I don't think so I will correct them.

Then you went on to make another post consisting of giving medical advice over the internet and that long list is not lost because I quoted you. Maybe before thinking you are soooo righteous you should practice what you preach and/ or wrongly accuse others of.

There you can put that in your pipe and smoke it, because obviously your smokin' something to make such rash judgements and comments.
Did you say you were not a nurse or did you mean to say you were? Anyway what difference does that make? You took the action you pleaded with me not to do(in which you were wrong in assuming what I was saying) and I quote "Please do not suggest that to anyone. Hospital Staff in the US are not supposed to despense medical advice over the telephone for legal reasons!".

Excellent move, interested in a game of chess?.

I was happy posting the suggestion I did that you had to jump on as if I were an idiot. Then call me ignorant. Instead of throwing cheap shots at me why couldn't you just admit you were wrong in jumping on me for what I suggested which had nothing to do with the above statement I quoted.

*Brightspot

edited to add; Kiska I hope you made it into the ER and got  medical attention, my suggestion was made out of concern and caring. Take care.

Great idea Brightspot... here it is easy to forget that people overseas don't have the almost inbred knowledge about sun burn. Most Aussies and families deal with this from when they were kids and often on a daily basis unless it is too cold to be outside in anything less than a thermal suit or it's pissing with rain like it is here now (Nothing in the catchments sop the official  drought continues).. The point is Aussie kids tend to grow up in the sun so we are as a Nation better educated in such things....

IronBear, you have such a great way with self expression, full of wit and I often find myself giggling as I read your posts. I agree about the inbred knowledge you Aussie's need to have in relation to the sun, I don't know if it is a lack of knowledge here or just that people don't heed the knowledge very well??
Have a great day!,
Maybe a long one out in the sun?
Now, that suggestion was definately ignorant and I rest assured you are inbred to know better.

I've never had a boyfriend who wouldn't take me to the doctor if I needed it. Probably because they knew I'd disembowel them when I got home. If your sick and need to go to the doctor GO find away and any boyfriend/girlfriend/Dom/me/ who wont take you when your sick isn't worth spit in my opinion. It shows how little they really care about you.

Hope you feel better.

Guys she's already said they can't afford a trip to the doctor or ER, That's just sadly how it is sometimes. Sure it sounded bad saying the bf wouldn't take her right now, but it's understandable once you hear they can't afford medical care or an ER.

Blame the state or something who ever makes medical care unabtainable lol.

I'm really not sure what to say ... My boyfriend isn't a dolt or a jerk. Neither of us have insurance and neither us can afford a trip to the ER ... He *HAS* to work ... I don't have family nearby and my friends have their own lives. I've had a worse sunburn before ... Yeah, it sucks but its life. All I can do now is deal with it.

OK... Brace yourself. The statement above is a bunch of monkey muffins. Hospitals are REQUIRED to treat you regardless of your ability to pay for the care. If you pay them $5.00 a month until the bill is paid off, then so be it. They must treat you by law. If you have a family doctor, call him, tell him that you must make payment arrangements and GO.

My statement about your boyfriend was merely pointing to the careless attitude toward your physical well being. Look, I have no health insurance. I have seen a doctor a few times in the last several weeks and guess what? I made payment arrangements with them because I couldn't afford to pay the entire bill up front.

If you don't go, that is fine, but you have been cautioned several times that not going is a risk. If you are prepared to take that risk with your own health then don't let me stop you.

I do hope you get help and I do hope that if you don't that all will be well with you.

Are you feeling any better today kiska?  I hope that you were finally able to get some aspirin or ibuprofen.  I hate being sunburned and avoid the sun like the plague every summer (especially since I always end up with skin poisoning the first time I'm out in the sun every year, and that's with sunblock on).  I'd rather remain ghostly white and wrinkle free, lol.  I'm 33 and people always tell me I look like I'm 25, so I guess the lack of sun has helped, especially when I see the sagging skin and wrinkles on those that have been sunworshipers for years.  Hope you're feeling better.

Take care!!

beth is a "ginger". I refer to her color as "clear". Before going outside I dip her in a convenient vat of SPF 45. Lately it's been Aveeno. Last summer my mother visited us and WAS hospitalized because she came out from a NJ winter directly into Southern California sun. Since she "never burned" and "always tanned" she didn't think any protection necessary.

The sun is a killer! Sunburn is MUCH more serious than people think.

Ah ok ... Wow ... LOL ... I had no idea posting a cry for help over a sunburn would cause so much debate ...

I *am* feeling MUCH better today. No blisters and its been 24 hours so I think I'm going to be ok. I spent most of the night either standing in the shower under tepid water or sitting in the tub with a piece of cloth draped over my back. When the cloth got hot, I'd dip it into the cool water and put it back. It took the heat out of the burn and helped immensely. I finally got some sleep this morning around 7 am.

I've got lotion, lotion and MORE lotion ... Lots of aloe stuff and I've been pretty much constantly sipping either green tea, black tea or water. I do appreciate the advice and I'm sorry I caused such a big argument. Wow ...

Gauge, I realize that they cannot deny me medical care. However, I've still got bills from 2004 when I almost bled to death. I guess in my panic and distress I worded things poorly ... Without insurance, the idea of ANOTHER hospital bill coupled with the likelihood that my boyfriend would have missed an entire day of work (and possibly lost his job because of the missed day) right now when he's the only one working ... It just wasn't an option. I appreciate your concern and all, but you assume a lot about my situation based on your own situation. Anyway, its really neither here nor there at this point because the worst is over and I'm ok. I appreciate that everyone was/is so concerned for me.

I'm definitely getting some of that Aveeno sunblock. Thank you, Merc!

Hopefully by next summer I'll be my pale self again ... lol

For the first 24 hours, I would leave the skin dry unless you have an aloe vera gel (or arnica gel would work too.)

Tell me Pandora, did you actually read my posts regarding the use of gels and other oily substances whilst the skin is still hot (which means it is still cooking)? Or are you so determined to be the guru in this field? If so and since you stated that you are not a Doctor or have no medical qualifications or even an ER nurse, I'd like to hear what your accedemic or practical qualifications are regarding burns. I showed your posts and this whole thread including my own posts to several folk last night when they came to dinner. besides my rother who is a leadig Ambulance Paramedic, I showed it to a delightful Asian Lady who is not only my Physician, but one of the highest qualifies Doctors in Tropical diseases here as highly rated in the care of burns including radiation burns. My comments wewre vindicated especially regardig the use of gels... Aloe Veta is ideal for the after treatment to reduce scaring and discomfort......

I adore you, Lady Hugs. Thank you for making me laugh!

Wow, I missed the part about keeping the skin dry for the first 24 hours. I hope all the cool water hasn't done any damage ... I was just dying to get the heat out of it. Hmm ... I'll be glad when this is over ... Ugh. I can't wear a bra and it hurts to wear a shirt so I've been topless since last night ... Something my boyfriend isn't complaining about. Of course, he can't touch anything ... LOL ... He can only look. Poor guy.  Although, really, how sexy are cajun style kiska boobies?

My shoulders seem to hurt the worst right now ... The muscles underneath the skin are sore like I've been working out too much and my nose itches ... Yeah, I know, weird thing to complain about but I know I don't dare scratch the itch so its just constantly *there* ... Taunting me!

My neighbor thinks this is hysterically funny. She told me there's a secret to tanning ... You don't do it all at once ... I think I'm going to adopt the attitude of not doing it at all. Period.

Now, here's the good news!

My hair is bleached blonde .. Naturally .. By the sun. Which means when I go to dye it blue (after my skin is better) I won't have to use as much bleach so there will be less damage. Ha!

So here I am, a most unnatractive color combination of pale green eyes, bright red skin, and reddish brownish blonde streakedish hair. I'm not sure if I could be mistaken for a furgitive lobster ... Maybe if my hair were still red. The mental image is great though ... I keep giggling when I think about it.

Glad to hear you are doing better kiska.

I have the true * celtic * colouring.. redhair, and the palest of pale white skin with freckles. The sun is my enemy. Even if the temp is 70 degrees and the sun is shining I will burn crisply. I have a feeling beth, of mercnbeth may be the same. My freckles actually turn green when I am sunburned.
The best product I have found is Sea n Ski Advanced sunblock 50 with zinc. I apply it every two hours when exposed to the sun and stay a nice pasty white color..it is very thick and leaves a whitish residue < zinc> that protects your skin. It has allowed me to enjoy a day in the swimming pool or a day at the lake. of course, i still seek shade when not in the water.

According to www.webmd.com, kiska did exactly the RIGHT thing by using the cool cloths and tepid baths and showers.  Also suggested, aloe vera and hyrocortisone.

Ok, just my five cents worth here, but could you have a sun allergy?
Yes, it's rare, but it does happen.

As for the aloe, I have a plant of it at the house. They are easy to grow too. When you get a burn, even a cooking burn, just break off one of the ends and rub the inside onto the burn.  It does help.

I'm light skinned and will burn after a short while, but it turns into a tan afterwards. I'm pale by nature. Go figure.

No no, its not an allergy to the sun ... I was out there for almost 6 hours with no sunblock ... I'd think just about anyone would have a reaction after that long.

Actually if all she has is just a bad sunburn...and after 6 hours...ANYBODY would have a sunburn then she can consider herself LUCKY.    I myself have an allergic reaction to the sun..and yes we know it's sun light I will get hives on one side if sitting next to a sunny window..I BURN if in the shade ...and have been taken to the hospital with sunstroke on a cloudy, overcast day after no less than 15 min exposure outside...I wear SPF 50 sunscreen and SPF 60 when i can find it...AC is my best friend...I shocked the Drs once when after a 4 hour tubing trip down the manistee river (this was before I was diagnosed with the allergy and in my teens) I developed a 4th Degree sunburn...Drs could not believe their eyes.

You did all the right things...if after a lot of sun like that and the skin is putting out a lot of heat, cool cloths or cool baths are the perfect thing...it's like any kind of burn...your first priority is to get the heat out so blisters won't be as bad.  Aloe Vera gel is perfect to help cool, sooth and keep the skin moisturized.  The next few days will be hard but you will survive ...then you can do it all over again....LOL

I have no idea what to say to that ...

I mean, I don't consider the situation to be his fault ... I was the idiot who spent 6 hours in the sun. He was at work ... If he'd been around, he would have had me come home a lot sooner or he would have had us both wait until the sun was lower in the sky before even heading out to the pool in the first place.
