Scientists at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis found that melittin, a toxin found in bee venom, physically destroys the HIV virus, a breakthrough that could potentially lead to drugs that are immune to HIV resistance. The study was published Thursday in the journal Antiviral Therapy...

The researchers attached melittin to nanoparticles that are physically smaller than HIV, which is smaller than body cells. The toxin rips holes in the virus' outer layer, destroying it, but the particles aren't large enough to damage body cells.

"Based on this finding, we propose that melittin-loaded nanoparticles are well-suited for use as topical vaginal HIV virucidal agents," they write. Theoretically, the particles could also be injected into an HIV-positive person to eliminate the virus in the bloodstream.

Status: offline 		This is great news. I had read a while back there was some promising research being done, and I think it is about time. The thing is that this breakthrough means a lot in the retrovirus field of research.

This is awesome news, but ...yeah, sure, I want to apply bee venum to the mucus lining of My vagina, sign Me up. *rolls eyes*
What about all the people who are ALLERGIC to bees? Can the remedy be separated from the allergen or are they one-and-the-same I wonder? I'm hoping they are going to try developing this with those people in mind as well.

Status: offline 		I'm reading around the interwebs that melittin can be anaphylactic. But maybe if they do more research, they can isolate what it is about the toxin that harms HIV?

And yeah - supposedly it's a class of pesticides that include nerve agents (Bayer makes a lot of these) that are doing the most damage to bees. They fly away from home, and the nerve agents scramble their ability to find their way back. They fly aimlessly until they die.

Status: offline 		Great news on the HIV thing but... uh.... surely I can't be the only one asking some questions about injecting nano-particles into human beings. I surely hope they do A LOT of LONG-TERM study on this before they bribe the FDA to approve it and rush it to market.

This is bullshit. Everything physically destroys HIV. Bleach does it. If you attached a chlorine nanoparticle to a delivery mechanism and launched it at HIV, the same thing would happen. HIV is pretty flimsy, physically. Biologially, it's hardy and crafty, but physically it's a pushover.

This sounds like someone justifying a grant that includes an apiary.

And we don't "need" bees for pollination. Bees do about 30% of the pollination of our edible crops. If we had no bees, pollination would still take place; in fact, there would be a dip in productivity, then something would fill the bees' niche, and we'd be back up again. If we had to, we could manually pollinate: both technology and Mexicans are cheap, and could easily replace bees.

Status: offline 		i don't imagine that any bee venom product or derivative would be unlisted. and if you have a bee allergy, it's important to make sure people know. i react badly to tb skin tests, and in the days when i had to get them (for school and such), i advised people, who just referred me for chest x-rays instead.

This is a bit misleading, it is the main component of bee venom, the rest being peptides, that attack cell membranes and causes other physiological effects.

As for the misconception of how much of pollination is done by bees, in fact, about one-third of the human diet comes from insect-pollinated plants, and the honeybee is responsible for 80 percent of that pollination, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

That only covers food crops, it does not even address the pollination the bees do in non food crops.

It surprises me that people can make statements that we can lose one part of the ecosystem and the world will keep going. That is not true in symbiotic organisms.

Considering how many times I have suffered because my gluten (flour) allergy wasn't caught by doctor OR pharmacy I would have to disagree. Thyroid meds, most anti-biotics & ironically skin treatment for celiac hives all have been given to me even with flour in them!!

Beyond prevention in the form of a vaginal gel, Hood also sees potential for using nanoparticles with melittin as therapy for existing HIV infections, especially those that are drug-resistant. The nanoparticles could be injected intravenously and, in theory, would be able to clear HIV from the blood stream.

“The basic particle that we are using in these experiments was developed many years ago as an artificial blood product,” Hood says. “It didn’t work very well for delivering oxygen, but it circulates safely in the body and gives us a nice platform that we can adapt to fight different kinds of infections.”

Since melittin attacks double-layered membranes indiscriminately, this concept is not limited to HIV. Many viruses, including hepatitis B and C, rely on the same kind of protective envelope and would be vulnerable to melittin-loaded nanoparticles.

While this particular paper does not address contraception, Hood says the gel easily could be adapted to target sperm as well as HIV. But in some cases people may only want the HIV protection.

Interesting article though I do have to wonder which group of HIV positive test group will they use in the trials? Will they test HIV positive people or people with full blown AIDS?
