Good for him... At least he had the stones to do it, and not succumb to the bible lobby. Now, if he would back it up and push for the repeal of the defense of marriage act.....

Shame they only reverse their stance when it happens in their own family.

FunCouple5280 -> RE: Gay Marriage is WRONG (3/15/2013 12:20:15 PM)

Could be a lesson to gays...get out of the closet and shame those bible thumper family members.....

Considering statistics, if all the heathens are on birth control and all the thumpers are breeding like jack rabbits...One could conclude that it is more likely for the religious cases to have gays in their family [:D] lol

I had the same, exact thought, tazzy. I'm glad he's changing his stance, but the term "chicken shit" comes to mind. If it hadn't been for his son's sexual orientation, he'd probably have kept his prior stance.

I think it's especially interesting that he was one of the co sponsors of the DOMA. Now he doesn't think it was such a good idea..

FunCouple5280 -> RE: Gay Marriage is WRONG (3/15/2013 12:34:08 PM)

Better late than never.... And whatever the reason for the change of heart is irrelavent, we shouldn't scare him back to his old opinions. Let the theocrats demonstrate why he should have never sided with them in the first place.

Ha!!! gotta love the blatant hypocrisy of the finger pointing "puritans", great thread! [sm=mistress.gif]

They probably stone them, or burn them at the stake or something.

Moonhead -> RE: Gay Marriage is WRONG (3/15/2013 1:15:39 PM)

(Or "more pathetic". One of the two. maybe even both.)

FunCouple5280 -> RE: Gay Marriage is WRONG (3/15/2013 1:36:05 PM)

Amen.

One of the points I've heard repeatedly in my years as a gay man is that the single most important factor to shape someone's view of GLBT folk is whether s/he knows any of us personally. I do not, I confess, know if research bears this out, but it makes sense to me.

ETA: One of the things that spurred me to come out to my devout Catholic parents (who took it just fine, btw) was that Cardinal O'Connor in New York was dissing gay folk, and I wanted my folks to know exactly whom the cardinal was talking about.

That's the nicest way of saying "what a pig-ignorant, prejudiced, arrogant wanker" that I've ever heard. [;)]

Sorry to hog the thread, but I can't resist sharing this either. [:)]

It's a father's note to his son:

Nate,

I overheard your phone conversation with Mike last night about your plans to come out to me. The only thing I need you to plan is to bring home OJ and bread after class. We are out, like you now. I’ve known you were gay since you were six, I’ve loved you since you were born.

-- Dad

P.S. Your mom and I think you and Mike make a cute couple.

*Chortle* That really is quite cute. I think my dad would do it the same way were he in that position.

I've got a true story. A bloke, shall we call him 'Dave', real surname McCafferty, told me how he'd come out to his parents, age 18. He got back from the pub, sat them both down and said, 'Mum, Dad, I've got something important to tell you'. They both sat very quietly, faces impassive, till Dave had finished his speech. Then his dad said, 'I always thought we should have called you Phil'. Dad then bursts out laughing while his Mum starts slapping him, saying, 'You promised not to! You promised!'.

He said to me, "Jesus, you expect either a variation of 'We'll always love you, whatever' or 'Never darken our doorstep again', or something in between. But you do *not* expect your parents to take the piss out of you. They'd known for years, of course, and my dad had been rehearsing that joke for just as long. Git.'

LOL! I try. At work, I'm the one who always gets tapped for delicate writing assignments.

But seriously, we all have our prejudices, and at least Senator Portman grew past one of his.

My mother's immortal line was "Well, I can't say I'm surprised."

Dad did say they'd always love me, as indeed they have.
