No, pit bulls are the villain of the decade, like German Shepherds, Rotties, and other breeds before them.

I can't understand why. All the Rottweilers I've ever met have been sandal-wearing vegans with a keen interest in Buddhist pacifism. Their teeth are actually made out of icing sugar.

They're also known for being enthusiastic musicians and will give your kids elementary piano and violin lessons.

Dogs behave poorly because their owners haven't trained them properly, or give them enough attention or exercise. Or because they were spooked and the only way they can defend themselves is to bite.

I help a friend with pitbull rescue (mostly through donations) and those dogs who are placed are loving, friendly, scared, and have really sad histories.

I've been bitten three times in my life - twice by rottweilers and once by a Keishan (sp?) Elkhound. The Rotties were very poorly socialized and untrained, so I didn't blame them. The Elkhound bite was my own fault, through ignorance, due to my stance and the way I was looking at him. He was nervous and I was challenging him without even knowing it. I don't blame the dogs or the breeds. I chalked all three bites up to human error. And we seem to rarely hear about those errors when the news reports a bite or attack.

Status: offline 		As with any dog, it is the training by, and the disposition of, the owner. Bad owners, bad dogs. Unless it is a viable medical reason. We just had a pit bull attack in my city. Two elderly women were attacked, and the pitbull shot and killed. The breed, by itself, is not given to violence by nature. It is given by immature people.

Status: offline 		The wife had a stray pit (probably dumped in the desert by a previous owner) show up at her work today. We've now got him in the kennel out in the back yard, pending finding him a home. Extremely affectionate, well mannered guy, skinny, but still stout. He exibited some definite alpha behaviors towards my dogs, and isn't fixed, but he's not initiating any aggression. Since he won't be here more than a couple of days, I'm not going to waste the time and energy of introducing him into the house (not to mention that the cats would stay pissed at us for weeks).

Like my old wolf hybrid, they aren't a breed for everyone, and they are not a breed I'm personally fond of, but for those who love them, and are equipped to the job, they can be fantastic pets.

If not for the situation with the cats (I have two and know they have lasting memories, lol), I would say it would be good to introduce him to your house, as it would only make him more adoptable.

But it sounds like even though you aren't fond of the breed, you also have nothing against them, and are giving this boy a safe place with at least some love while he waits for a permanent home.

Oh, and the only place that boy is stout is in his head, and that's all skull! Give him a treat and feed him some nice raw chicken and get some meat on those bones!

Agree! I was in my car and someone unnannouced and unwelcome stuck their head through the open window on the driver's side. My min pin/jack russell mix gave him a single warning poke to his nose, then lunged to attack him. No other dog I've owned (including my beastie of a boxer) would ever have done that.

This. That is a very skinny pit. Getting food into him should help with the dominance issues as well.

Quick update. Just a day of kibble (and some spoiling), and his back ribs have already retreated from view. On the spectrum of the desert strays/dumps that find the wife, he was in very good condition.

Status: offline 		I agree that training is a huge factor. What some owners think of as "funny" can turn out to be dangerous. One of my best friends got a German Shepherd/Boxer/ something else mutt as a puppy. You know...everyone always says mixed breeds are less temperamental. They were so rough with that puppy, and they thought it was hilarious to give it life sized dolls to shred, etc. That dog was a menace. I manged to deal with it when it was small, but when I moved away and then came back a couple of years later, I visited them, and she attacked me. Pinned me against the walk, scratching and tearing at my clothing with her teeth. I slid far enough down the hallway to go into a room and lock the door - my legs were bleeding, my dress was torn, and I had bite marks on my arm.

My friend and her hubby laughed and said "she's just playing."

Best friend or not, I never went back to their house as long as that dog was alive.

Some people are just clueless.

for helping him and other strays.

There is no bad breed of dogs. Pits are in the hot seat
now where others have been in the past. I remember
the hysteria about Dobermans. All those urban legends
about them turning on their masters and killing them.
Cause they were devil dogs!

HOLY. SHIT. What assholes! A simple call to the police, showing them the bite marks would have shut their laughter right up. I wonder how many other people that dog did that to, and the people got away with having a dangerous animal.

Dog ownership is an I.Q. TEST. PERIOD.

Well, I have to admit, he is cute. I'm partial to the assymetrical facial markings. I'd give him food almost free-choice now that he's eating. It will help pack some pounds on him.
