CNN story

Local news story

I know. They are wonderful pets.

Save it. We've heard it before.

Never been bitten by a pit. I have been bitten by a chihuahua and a mini poodle. My mother had a cocker spaniel that went vicious and had to be put down just before my sister arrived.

One reason why attacks like this make the news is because no one really reports how vicious little dogs can be. It is also reported because it happens pretty infrequently (thus making it news).

I think part of that might be because those little dogs haven't killed anyone that I have heard of.

I just read a story about a small dog that is being put down for biting a 4 year old. It happens, but it rarely makes the news. The only reason this did is because the family is appealing the court's decision that the dog be put down.

So should all those breeds be slain as well? Jesus...

Speaking of Jesus.... Christians have killed more people in the name of their god over the course of recorded history than dogs have killed humans in the last hundred years... how bout we start a christian euthanasia movement? By the same logic.. after all

This has to be one of the most easily preventable tragedies... yet this is a recurring news story.

Again today:

Another child mauled to death by a pit bull.

I will never understand the continued existence of these animals in our society. It must be a Darwin thing at work.

I agree 100%. Irresponsible pet owners should be euthanized until they are eliminated from the gene pool altogether.

JAS, you said it much better than I did!

If every rider carried mace, there would be fewer irresponsible dog owners.

Think of it as a public service.

Would that be for the dog or the irresponsible owner??

I'm trying to stay away from this thread, because there's a lot being said that's just (IMO) idiotic and it angers me. However, I felt it necessary to share some feel good stories that were just recently in the news.

Pit bulls kill California jogger:

http://www.sfgate.com/news/crime/article/Person-of-interest-named-in-Calif-jogger-mauling-4504058.php

Always knew jogging was dangerous. It's ok that she died though, since it was the owner's fault, not the dogs'.

She wasn't a jogger. Just a lady in her 60's who loved working in her garden, out taking her regular morning walk. The media does love latching on to their version of reality, though.

According to local coverage (I'd link, but the site requires a subscription), when she started taking the daily walks, she would carry a big stick, but when she never needed it, she stopped doing that.

It's a horrible tragedy, and a horrific way to die.

I'd much rather prevent such attacks in the first place than charge inept trainers for extensive surgeries.

Put down the owners and/or trainers.

Transfer the dog to a shelter.

Problem solved.
