STEUBENVILLE, Ohio - Two members of the high school football team that is the pride of Steubenville were found guilty Sunday of raping a drunken 16-year-old girl in a case that bitterly divided the Rust Belt city and led to accusations of a cover-up to protect the community's athletes.

Steubenville High School students Trent Mays and Ma'Lik Richmond were sentenced to at least a year in juvenile jail, capping a case that came to light via a barrage of morning-after text messages, social media posts and online photos and video. Mays was sentenced to an additional year in jail on a charge of illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material, to be served after his rape sentence is completed.

We need to teach girls that if raped, they have the MORAL RIGHT to do everything they can to kill their rapist. And as a society, we need to give the benefit of the doubt to the girls, rather than the boys. "He needed killing" should be a prima-fascie defense.

The rapists and the "spectators" that did nothing to help this young woman, were all raised by wolves and acted less than human.

With all the clear evidence, I think they got off lightly.
They should get 10 years "minimum" and no parole.
The little punk bastards will be out in 4 and 5 years, is that justice?

They were tried as juveniles. They seem to have gotten the most they can legally get. And now they will have to register as sex offenders.

That is why I agree with Trickless, they should have been tried as ADULTS.

I hope this sends a message to other small communities where hero worship of their young football players is still a common practice. It is past time to get out of the mind frame that just because the criminals happen to be on the football team that the actions of the players can be covered up, excused, or forgotten for the sake of the athletics program, rather than get justice for the victim. Had these kids not been involved in high school sports, it wouldn't have been such a fight to get it to trial and get justice for the girl.

I truly applaud those who made the noise to get this story brought to light and those who ensured the prosecution would happen.

Holy crap. No wonder conservatives fear liberals. Sure, let's just throw out every concept of justice we might pretend to hold dear. Let's revert to a mob scene complete with pitchforks and torches every time some girl sheds a tear.

I'll pass on that please. I'd like to retain some civilization and I don't really see the point of feminism if it was just going to turn the tables and put women on top as the oppressors. I know that's classically how it's done in history but I'd rather avoid it if possible.

DeWine said investigators identified 43 people who attended at least one of the two parties where the assaults took place. Authorities interviewed 27 of those people, but the 16 others refused to cooperate for various reasons.

Additionally, the owners of one of the homes where one of the parties took place was interviewed as well as dozens of school officials.

The contents of 13 cell phones were analyzed, which amounted to 396,270 text messages, 308,586 photos, 940 videos, 3,188 phone calls and 16,422 contacts.

DeWine asked the Jefferson County Common Pleas Court to convene a grand jury to meet on or around April 15. Evidence will be presented and DeWine said he expected that numerous witnesses will be called to testify. The grand jury does not necessarily mean that there will be additional charges or indictments, but it is possible.

I found this article to be a very interesting one.Here is a small part of the article....

"It wasn't violent," explained teammate Evan Westlake when asked why he didn't stop the two defendants as they abused a non-moving girl that Westlake knew to be highly intoxicated. "I always pictured it as forcing yourself on someone."

That was part of the arrogance.

Arrogance from the defendants. Arrogance from the friends. Arrogance within the culture.

Arrogance based on the fact that this night, witnesses testified over and over, wasn't strikingly different than any other night in the life of a Big Red football player.

The boys drank. They drove around. They went to each other's houses until 2, 3, 4 in the morning. They exploited permissive parents who let the party continue. They, according to so many locals, knew there were bars that would serve them, liquor stores that would supply them and adults who would look the other way. They were football players being football players.

They slept wherever and whenever they crashed, preferably with some girl. Any girl.

They were allowed the freedoms of young adults, yet lacked the maturity to handle that freedom.

"The entitlement we heard during testimony, it didn't seem like any empathy or support for the victim," said Katie Hanna, statewide director of the Ohio Alliance to End Sexual Violence. "To see these things happen and to say, 'I don't recall; I didn't think it was a bad thing; I just thought this was OK.' It suggests that this was commonplace behavior."

There is something wrong with people when a kid at one of the parties offers $3 to anyone who would pee on this passed out girl[as a joke he later stated and no one took him up on it] instead of any of them trying to help her.In my youth,I remember a few passed out girls[and guys] at parties and they never were abused other than teased the next day about their inability to handle their liquor.They were taken care of and driven home by others,not abused.But the actions of not only the 2 guys convicted but the lack of any one of these numerous other kids not trying to stop and taking numerous pictures and passing them around like this is something to brag about makes me glad I do not have any teenage daughters in this day and age.

I hope they were able to recover every pic sent and text that was connected to the incident. (I realize the figures above are more likely dumping the contents of entire cell phone history and not just related to this story.) Especially from those who refused to offer the evidence that they had rather than shrugging their shoulders about seeing it, recording it, and passing the content along. There's got to be a law about possessing and/or promoting child pornography in that state.

I honestly don't care if she stripped naked and walked into a biker bar at 2am. What possible difference could that make in terms of the behavior of the criminals?
