As long as you "have no doubt" in the absence of any evidence, that's all that really matters. N'est-ce pas?

You probably don't have any doubts about your French either.

Thanks for the graphic K.

Despite the ugliness of the subject matter the map itself is colourful - some might even say pretty but there's no accounting for taste is there?

I am unsure of its relevance. The map is said to outline the incidence for all rapes, whereas I was clearly referring to a particular type of rape, which I even went to the trouble of specifying as "a gang of (usually) drunken footballers or surfers* raping girls", lest there be any confusion in more feeble minds.

That said, I'm sure that someday, somebody, somewhere will find it useful background detail. We live in hope, n'cest pas?

That might exist somewhere, but I'd have very little faith in it's accuracy. First, you'd have to look at the fact that your only statistics as such would be those that are reported. This case is a shining example of why that doesn't happen. It's right here in front of us. If national (and international) attention hadn't been brought to this incident, do you really think there would have been charges brought and a conviction obtained?

Very true LP. If this had not gone viral, it would have been swept under the rug to be added to those other "not reported" rapes.

That isn't the only requirement for an appeal.

And these attornies have already proven that they are living up to every iota of their oath to present a zealous defense.

They are entitled to a defense, and whatever appeal their lawyers can use.... sounds to me like they need new lawyers if thats the best they can come up with.
It's the angle they should have used during trial. It's not grounds for an appeal. It's not "new evidence" to overturn the conviction.

Still makes Me sick, tazzy. I can't help it.

The people of the town have been blaming the girl since the story broke.

The boys should have been tried as adults, and as rapists, upon being found guilty, executed on the court house lawn.

The people who put the video on the internet, stood by and watched the crime happen and said nothing should be tried, convicted, and as a reward, given a camping vacation to the south pole with civil war era tents and swimsuits for clothes. Oh and for food, ergot contaminated rye bread.

The internet squawkers have been blaming her for getting raped, and for ruining the futures of the rapists.

If there are arrests for a coverup, or for the threats, and school administrators or prosecutors go on trial or get fired, you can expect a Penn State level of denial and anger targeting her, and I would be afraid it won't be confined to the internet.

Well, according to some people I have seen commenting on this case in other boards, it seems that the victim is at fault for a couple of reasons:

1) Being female.
2) being at a party while being female.
3) wearing clothes that might or might not have been flattering while being female.
4) being drunk, at a party, wearing clothing that may or may not be flattering while being female.

My opinion about putting the blame on the victim is that the only thing the victim did wrong was being born into a society or town that believes that local football heroes can do no wrong and are entitled to break the law in order to get their rocks off.

Oh, wait she did not have a choice as to where she was born or lived, did she?

In that case, the residents of the town that seem to feel it was her fault should be

I keep forgetting that the US does not punish people for fucked up stupid ideas.

In that case, the residents blaming the victim are what I call "terminally stupid." Perhaps they should be given vacations to beach resorts where there are large numbers of bull sharks? And of course be forced to swim in the ocean.

5) Being underage and failing to force several male athletes to stop while she was in a stupor strongly resembing being drugged.

Much of that cover up and anger is because over 20 kids were involved in all this.. between photos and videos, as well as comments on social media... thats a shirt storm for a town that size. The parents rushed to cover it up, they didnt expect one of their own to already be on top of it. if it had not been for that one woman, they would have gotten away with it all.

Their anger isnt because this girl made a fuss... its because they got caught. They were hoping to diffuse it by casting the girl in a poor light... by the treats and intimidation. It may have worked except for Anonymous making it a public spectacle.

The lime light glowed over that small town as a result. There was nothing left to do but send in the state to take over the case.

Wait till the lawsuits hit.

And the idiots of that town actually expect people to accept their anger when they could have stalled all of this by offering up the two boys to stand trial? Reality is, if they had, the two boys probably would have gotten a mere slap on the wrist and let go.

They have no one to blame for this outcome but themselves.

Unfortunately, if I were to post what I think the family and real friends of the victim should have done to the two rapists, the crowd of onlookers, and the townspeople that tried to cover it up, the mods would delete the post for advocating illegal activity.

I hope this sends a message to other small communities where hero worship of their young football players is still a common practice. It is past time to get out of the mind frame that just because the criminals happen to be on the football team that the actions of the players can be covered up, excused, or forgotten for the sake of the athletics program, rather than get justice for the victim. Had these kids not been involved in high school sports, it wouldn't have been such a fight to get it to trial and get justice for the girl.

I truly applaud those who made the noise to get this story brought to light and those who ensured the prosecution would happen.

Ours does. Football is god here. Our school brought on this zero tolerance drug policy. If you are caught with drugs, fail a drug test then you are suspended unless you get caught enough and then off for the year. Pffft that actually worked out to mean only if you are not the star football players. Yeah the quarterback and two other of the good players were caught red handed smoking dope in the locker room after winning a game and given a lecture by the coach and the principal. I was stunned when my son got in the car after the game telling me all of that and the next game all 3 were out there playing. My son's friends that is a girl was shoved into the guys locker room and the door was held closed while she screamed to be let out. Again it was the same boys who can do no wrong because they can throw a ball so nothing happened them despite the girls parents raising hell at the school. I could see kids here getting away with rape as long as they are good at playing football.

What is so sad and scary is the way the media had sympathy for the ruined lives of the football players. It is far more then just in that town or mine. It seems to be ingrained in our society to go ahead and do as you please to passed out drunk girls.

Yes. Indeed. It seems to be ingrained in certain quarters of our societies too. Cases like this one - a football (or other sporting code) team, usually drunk, ganging up on girls who aren't in any position to take care of themselves, let alone make decisions involving informed consent - are not just rare incidents that can be put down to a particular town/club/group of individuals. All that we know for certain is the frequency of these attacks is far higher than that reported.

The usual response seems similar to that seen in this case - cover up denial and intimidation of those who speak out. What are the factors that drive otherwise decent people to engage in these cover ups when they know full well they are so wrong? Why do otherwise apparently 'decent' young men rape girls in these environments? Why do they feel afterwards that they have done nothing wrong? Why is it that so often the rapists get public sympathy and the victims are treated to more abuse? Is it something in the culture of youth sports? Are the values (or more accurately lack of values) that enable these horrors part of the cultures of these teams? Is this a way these males feel they need to 'prove' their 'masculinity'? If so where does that come from? Why is it that so few people are prepared to examine at the issues from this perspective?
