My landlord is my friend. He's lost his bank accounts for non-payment of child support. Instead of giving him a rent check, I pay his bills. He's entering into a payment plan with the state to pay child support and wants me to send the checks to the state. I have concerns about attaching my name to his payment (and theoretically to his messy divorce, etc).

I suggested that he use his Bluebird AMEX but 1. he does not want his name associated with the payment (not sure why) and 2. the state only takes MasterCard and Discover.

I then suggested he get a secured MasterCard such as https://www.billshrink.com/credit-cards/cards/hsbc-secured-mastercard_97/ or http://www.capitalone.com/credit-cards/secured-mastercard/

I have a bad feeling about attaching my name to this mess but don't know how it could cause issues. Thoughts?

What state do you live in? (I can't access profiles from my phone).

Why does he not want the payment attached to his name? I would follow up on that one first. Especially if he is asking you to use your name.

Other than that, really, it is his duty, let him handle it.

where i live you (not you personally per se, but he ) can send the payment to the child support agency via snail mail. no credit card required. that is how my daughter's father handles his child support payments. he could take the money you pay him for rent and get a money order and send it to them.

i would be questioning why he doesn't want his name attached to the payments. personally i would suggest to him that he does what i described above and not get involved.

Something about this scenario seems a little shady to me. If he is court ordered to
pay support, his name is already on it, regardless of how the payment is made.
Regardless of how much you may love him as a person, your rent payment is a business
deal, and should not include anything to do with his personal affairs.

I would discontinue paying his other bills with your rent payment, and instead purchase
the prepaid credit cards, and let him pay his bills as he chooses.
http://www.creditcards.com/prepaid.php

This has the potential to go sour, regardless of your friendship. What happens if you
need to move one day? Who is he going to rely on to handle his personal affairs then?
Also, how are you able to prove you have been paying rent, if the need ever arose?

(This is a group response to several questions)

I am in Massachusetts and DOR does accept money orders, but I believe if you are not a customer of a bank they charge fees for money orders.

I do have a spreadsheet and credit cards receipts for payments which should serve as proof of rent payment should the need arise.

And here in Minnesota if you would send in child support payments you are considered to be 'helping' assume the debt, don't know MA, but I bet...........

If he is making a deal on back support, how is it that they credit the payments to him without his name on the deal?

You just write the check in your name to MA Child SPT CTR........

Go with your first instinct on this, and don't do it.

I'm a landlady, and am currently renting a room to a very good friend of mine. Despite our links through friendship and tenancy, neither of us would ever consider involving the other in our individual financial affairs. It's just not a good place to be, and could leave either - or both - of us in a mess should it go sour for whatever reason.

Renting to or from a friend is pretty damn hard. The landlord can feel guilty "taking" money from a friend, particularly if living in the same property; the tenant could start presuming on the friendship where payment of rent and bills is concerned; the landlord can let maintenance and repairs slide because "Ah, it's just my mate living there, they won't mind." There are so many things in there that can complicate the arrangement... so why add more?

Keep yourself away from it, friend or not.

Yes, that is exactly the sort of thing I'm concerned about - thanks for articulating it for me.

And also, this jazz about him choosing where you direct your rent - paying his bills, paying his child support, whatever - is more than a bit bizarre.

In my case, if I want to pay my bills, pay off my student loan, pay my mortgage, buy a handbag - anything - I pay it from my own account after my friend pays her rent into it. I don't need her to be my "middle man" and pay for things out of her account on my behalf, in the guise of "rent". And nor should he need you to do it. It's up to him to distribute your rent payment as he requires, not up to you to distribute it for him.

For one thing, it sounds like a way to weasel out of paying tax on the rent. If it doesn't land in his account, well, how is anyone to know of its existence?

There are convenience stores here (IL) that sell money orders for $0.69.

Then it should be really easy. The amount he needs to pay in child support he can just put in his account each month. After all, they're already using the money in there to cover child support. No need to figure out another way to send it.

They will quit attaching the account when he has made a repayment plan in court.

Ah, yeah, sorry I forgot about that bit. I'm in the UK and it's probably different from how it works in the US, so I wouldn't know what to do about that, other than seconding Poise's suggestion of pre-paid credit cards, in this instance. Let him do what he sees fit with your rent, and leave you out of it.

I just went downstairs to suggest this. He insists that DOR attached and then closed his account, which doesn't make any sense to me. I think the bank closed his account after multiple overdrafts. Then we got off on a weird tangent and I gave up.

I'm not going to help with this - thanks all!
