Do you think a woman should have to watch a video on life or answer a questionaire about non-medical issues to get an abortion? It may still be a choice, but if she has a right to do it, why should she have to tell you shit other than something medically relevant to the procedure?

A woman being asked about breastfeeding is relevant to the procedure. Unless now they come with a built in feeding tube.

This isnt about non-medical questions. These questions relate directly to the process of giving birth and caring for an infant.

Did you bother to read up on the program?

Sometimes, others say it best:

quote:

Then there is the question of general condescension. When I was a brand new, righteous vigilant mother I too got that swag bag with the packet of Infamil in it. I was outraged, horrified, I probably cursed for the first time in front of my precious infant. But that little packet did not break down my resolve and compromise my moral rectitude. I did with it the same thing I do when I get a swag bag from a PR company or my dentist: I threw it into the garbage, because I am grown person and I can do things like that.

Now that I am older and wiser and ten years into parenting I have realized something about that packet. Infant formula is not poison. It is one of the great and completely unheralded engines of women’s liberation. Take away infant formula and the millions of women who fuel our economy would no longer be able to work, because American employers are certainly not going to pay them to stay home and breastfeed.

There is only one good thing about Bloomberg’s announcement: it seems to have pissed women off, by turning the breastfeeding debate into a question of self determination. For a few years I have been relatively alone in complaining about the enormous pressure to breastfeed but now there are more angry voices joining the chorus. Gayle Tzemach Lemmon called Bloomberg’s announcement the new war on women in the Atlantic today. “Giving birth to a baby does not make you an infant,” she wrote. Hear hear.

lol .. i like the comment on the first one Lucy...

Wow...breastfeeding as Plan A, formula feeding as a Plan B, and aren't we glad there IS a Plan B in case it's needed? I don't think the world of mommydom is ready for such common sense, because it's no fun to argue with.

You really should give credit where its due.

And again you have yet to show where the harm to women or their infants lies.

Lol there never was a debate over harm. Tazz whenever we argue it is at cross purposes. You are looking at it from an ends perspective, me, a means perspective. Bloomberg has a record for meddling. You think he knows best or is it the AMA or AAP? Now they happen to a agree, but why does he need to interject. He needs to keep his nose in more relevant business. Last I checked there are still areas of NYC screwed over from super-storm sandy that could use some attention.

PS I am not sure why the link didn't post

tazzygirl -> RE: Bloomberg tells women what to do... (3/26/2013 12:49:13 PM)

He is running his program along side the AMA and the AAP.

But Latch On NYC isn’t the only program of its kind. Though it’s run independently by the city, it coincides with a nationwide movement to get hospitals to do a better job of promoting breastfeeding. The National Initiative for Children’s Healthcare Quality’s CDC-funded Best Fed Beginnings campaign is one of several campaigns sharing that aim. And, internationally, the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative is working toward the same goal.

And individual states, recognizing that the American Academy of Pediatrics and other authoritative sources maintain that breastfeeding is best for both baby and mother, have instituted or are in the process of instituting breastfeeding-friendly hospital policies. Maryland, for instance, has a draft policy posted for review as we speak.

From Lucy's first link.

It would appear that from your "logical" perspective you also feel that made in the factory formula is superior to mother's milk.

Or, it's that these people think it's the right of the mother to decide whether to breastfeed or formula feed. And, superiority isn't the only thing checked when making this decision.

Not to mention that not all mothers are even capable of lactating.

Back on point, Bloomberg is really bothering me. He's giving the conservatives plenty of ammo when they complain about an intrusive nanny state.

yep everyone bellared and cried for government health care and now that they have it they are starting to be cared for listen to the river of tears! this is fucking hilarious!

Well, then they can "promote" it by providing women with "breastfeeding" swag. And why should they be promoting either? Yes, I know that the assumption is that the gift bags are a promotion, but is it really? Or is it just some "starter" stuff?

I am not anti-breastfeeding, but like the article you quoted above, all too often, women are made to feel like terrible mothers who don't care about their child's best interest because they bottle feed. It's offensive. We are women, we aren't stupid.

Lucylastic -> RE: Bloomberg tells women what to do... (3/26/2013 1:53:13 PM)

now that the ban on the drink size has been overturned, they need something to bitch about him over so they drag up old news, its not like hes loved by many on the left, I think he is douchewaffle, but it wouldbe nice if they would actually find out facts before spewing bs
of course real nanny states like N Dakota and Alabama et al get a pass from folks not on the left of the spectrum

We're just trying to keep the "pass meter" in balance. [8D]

Lucylastic -> RE: Bloomberg tells women what to do... (3/26/2013 1:56:26 PM)

yeah one man against 1000 republican bills against womens rights, youve one fuck of along way to go.
And you still treat it like a joke..

tazzygirl -> RE: Bloomberg tells women what to do... (3/26/2013 1:56:37 PM)

Of course we arent.... but we arent 16 having a baby. I remember giving lots of goodies to my breastfeeding moms, including a pump and pads. I didnt breastfeed due to convenience... and not just because it was easier to pop a bottle into his mouth.

And I can see how some might be offended, especially with so much disinformation being put out. However, I dont see this initiative as making bottle feeding mom's out to be bad parents.

Lucylastic -> RE: Bloomberg tells women what to do... (3/26/2013 1:58:21 PM)

Have to admit Tazzy, im glad to see that some of ouur fiscal cons havent been whinging about the cost of those goodie bags of formula, diaper samples etc etc.

FunCouple5280 -> RE: Bloomberg tells women what to do... (3/26/2013 1:59:41 PM)

ND and AL can suck it (I assume you are pointing to abortion law and gay rights issues). However, they aren't the topic of discussion. Also, just cause they are asshats it doesn't permit the asinine behavior of another douchewaffle (lol great term btw lucy:))

Lucylastic -> RE: Bloomberg tells women what to do... (3/26/2013 2:02:24 PM)

nanny statism has been mentioned more than once, in this thread...in my way of thinking doing what they are doing is much worse than what bloomberg offfers up. Classic Nanny statism.

Aren't those items donated as promos from the manufacturer, so therefore no cost to the hospital? Just asking

Lucylastic -> RE: Bloomberg tells women what to do... (3/26/2013 2:04:59 PM)

It all ties into costs.....Just like the donations of samples to doctors.....

FunCouple5280 -> RE: Bloomberg tells women what to do... (3/26/2013 2:06:26 PM)

Are you arguing that a company cannot market their product then?

cordeliasub -> RE: Bloomberg tells women what to do... (3/26/2013 2:35:59 PM)

I breast fed both of mine and loved it. My best friend was basically ordered by the doctor at 6 weeks post partem to get her baby some formula as she was failing to thrive because my friend couldn't produce. She would have done formula sooner if the lactation lady who visited her hadn't made her feel like a child abuser for considering it. THOSE are the people who need to be locked up, IMO.

I was bottle fed....cause, um, since I'm adopted my mom didn't have milk. Maybe that's why I'm so weird now.....I KNEW it was Mom's fault!! [:D]
