More news from the wild and crazy American dystopia...

Obama decries ‘perpetual campaign’ at $2.5 million fundraiser
President Obama told a $5,000-per-person cocktail reception Wednesday evening that “we can’t have perpetual campaigns” ...Hedge fund billionaire Tom Steyer hosted Obama’s cocktail party at his San Francisco mansion Wednesday night, before Obama transitioned to an even more exclusive $32,400-per-person dinner at Ann Getty’s mansion in Pacific Heights

> Say what?

ACLU says Reid’s gun legislation could threaten privacy rights, civil liberties
a top lobbyist for the ACLU announced that the group thinks Reid’s current gun bill could threaten both privacy rights and civil liberties... “As we’ve seen with many large government databases, if you build it, they will come.”

> It's official: Pigs fly.

City Recruits Minority Lifeguards Even if They Can’t Swim
In a staggering case of affirmative action gone wild, officials in a major U.S. city are actually recruiting minorities to be lifeguards at public pools even if they’re not good swimmers. It’s all in the name of diversity... Public pools are largely used by Latino and African-American kids, but most of the lifeguards are white and this creates a huge problem.

> We need to require Mental Health checks for politicians.

Feel free to add your own. This could be a long thread.

Apparently Judicial Watch can make up this crappy racist story. Here is a take from another source on qualifications for the jobs in Phoenix:

Applicants need to be at least 15 years old and have lifeguard certification. The city is offering certification-preparation classes. "We're in the middle of training people," Hulett said. A certification test will be held March 24.

Class participants are taught first aid, CPR and how to recognize and respond to somebody who is distressed in the water.

Participants must pass a test in which they:

Perform 300 yards of continuous swimming using freestyle or breaststroke.
Tread water for one minute without the use of hands.

Retrieve a 10-pound brick in deep water.

More training classes are scheduled. Lifeguards can work 20 to 40 hours per week. The pay for beginning lifeguards is $11.15 an hour.

This detail may have escaped you, but your cite does not contradict the quote. Nor does the story omit to mention the training they will receive:

Phoenix will spend thousands of dollars to recruit minorities even if they’re not strong swimmers, according to an official quoted in a news report. Blacks, Latinos and Asians who may not necessarily qualify can still get hired, says the city official who adds that “we will work with you in your swimming abilities.”

Additionally, this "crappy racist story" parallels the NPR article, which it references:

On a recruiting effort there over the winter, the city's Melissa Boyle tells students she's not looking for strong swimmers... "We will work with you in your swimming abilities," Boyle says... "The kids in the pool are all either Hispanic or black or whatever, and every lifeguard is white," she says," and we don't like that. The kids don't relate; there's language issues."

Adding a language requirement to the hiring criteria never seems to have occurred them. Obviously, that's not the point. They're invoking "diversity" because they don't like their kids having to learn to relate to people of other races and ethnicities.

And you say the "racism" is where?

Well Kirata, some of that shit is definitely made up, what it portrays is the situation.

Isn't amazing what a skewed version of reality you get if you actually believe the right wing media?

More than 90 percent of the students at Alhambra High are black, Latino or Asian. On a recruiting effort there over the winter, the city's Melissa Boyle tells students she's not looking for strong swimmers. Like many under-resourced schools, Alhambra doesn't have a swim team.

"We will work with you in your swimming abilities," Boyle says.

To help diversify its lifeguard ranks, the city raised about $15,000 over the past two years in scholarships to offset the cost of lifeguard-certification courses. Recruits who pass a swim test at the end can apply to be city lifeguards.

If he is selected to be a lifeguard, other pool staff will work with him on his swimming skills all summer.

That's someone a parent would be comfortable life-guarding their child? [8|]

My kid is (well was now ) a pool attendant, (the only one on duty) at 16 years old, she is 75 pounds sopping wet.  She got here lifesaver certificate (2 days of training, 4 hours a day) and a 50 cent raise, she is now a 17 year old 95 pounds sopping wet lifeguard (and still the only one on duty) her boss during this time (recently fired much to my daughters relief) was a totally frazzled out crack whore.

Parents dont seem to mind.

Well fuck. They still have to pass the test. And it is for a city pool; not the fucking ocean.
Why aren't those pools used to give swimming lessons to very young children anyway?

Don't they teach brown children to swim? Why not?

Assuming you can tread water and learn the life saving techniques who cares how well a lifeguard at a pool can do the freestyle or the butterfly?

My problem is not with kids being trained as a life guards. It's the tenor of the article. Experimenting with what has worked based solely on the correctness of diversity.

Have you ever rescued someone?
I was a WSI (Water Safety Instructor) long ago and I actually was part of a couple of rl rescues. It's fucking HARD and these people weren't struggling.
If a lifeguard doesn't know his (or her) stuff cold and have the water sense and endurance to do what has to be done, you end up with 2 dead people.

mnottertail -> RE: You Can't Make This Shit Up.... (4/4/2013 1:39:37 PM)

Pools are solid full of kids who can and cannot swim.  It aint that hard, if they fight just shove them under water, they will relent soon enough.

This isnt the open sea.

Hillwilliam -> RE: You Can't Make This Shit Up.... (4/4/2013 1:47:07 PM)

Sorry Ron but there have been double drownings in pools too involving inexperienced rescuers. Shove em under and they just grab tighter if they're not already climbing on top of your head.

Know what happens then? The city gets sued for having incompetent help.

mnottertail -> RE: You Can't Make This Shit Up.... (4/4/2013 1:51:19 PM)

Meh, thats a laugh.   If they cling,  go under. They want nothing to do with that, they are drowning.  There is no sue for incompetent help.  Show me the myriad suits.

HW is right. The drowning victim grabs harder and tries even more desperately to survive. They don't even take you, the one helping, into consideration. Least till they are relatively safe and gain presence of mind.

mnottertail -> RE: You Can't Make This Shit Up.... (4/4/2013 2:08:47 PM)

Sorry, not my experience, maybe you are not dealing with actual human beings.   If you are drowning and grabby and you go under water, or I swim under water, you become immediately looking for a way to surface, and you are fuckin right about the drowning victim dont give a shit about you. (in the royal sense)

hlen5 -> RE: You Can't Make This Shit Up.... (4/4/2013 2:15:25 PM)

When I took the Red Cross Lifesaving swimming classes (over 30 years ago!!), our instructions were to dive under if they were grabbing your head. The theory was they would not willingly go underwater and let go. Then you could come up and let them chase/thrash after you with you slowly swimming to shore/the edge of the pool.

Hillwilliam -> RE: You Can't Make This Shit Up.... (4/4/2013 2:21:30 PM)

I never claimed there were myriad suits but there have been some for allegedly undertrained guards.

As for your theory of "if they cling, go under" good luck with that. I mean think man. What are they gonna do, let go and swim away?

Got the same training from the USN about that long ago.
