ORIGINAL: MasterCaneman Sorry if it came across as insensitive. My heart aches for the dead, the wounded, and the ones who have to deal with the slowly unfolding nightmare we're watching right now. I stand by my words, we have been very, very, very lucky so far. Up until this afternoon, we could all go to a mass spectator event knowing that, for the most part, nothing like this would ever happen. A few months ago, at the range I go shoot at, we had a guest who was an instructor for an advanced shooting class in the area. He was an Israeli, and he remarked at how surprised he was to see how little we seem to be aware of how easy it is for an attack like this. He remarked about things like how the trashcans could be used to conceal explosives, how easy it would be to park large trucks near significant numbers of people, stuff like that. Nice fella, wasn't condescending at all, just surprised at how lassez-faire we are considering our position in the world. Call me insensitive, call me a jerk. I don't care. I am only pointing out the obvious here. The instructor you talked about reminds me of the 9/11 bombers. Came here and took flying lessons. Sorry, our borders need to be closed, especially to those countries that have issues with us. Does that come off as racist? Maybe. But I think it is more nationalist. LL The man mentioned in the post does not sound like the 9/11 bombers at all. The poster stated he was an Israeli. People who have spent any amount of time in Isreal tend to be much more aware of the potential for terrorism. It has been a long time since we have had regular bomb drills in this country. (Thankfully, there hasn't been need for them.) I do think your quick assumption came across not as racist or nationalist but ignorant: the kind of ignorance many people develop when not exposed to cultures outside of their own.
