friends are posting news sources on facebook that it was a terrorist attack. :(

Politesub53 -> RE: Explosions at Boston Marathon (4/15/2013 4:34:12 PM)

Lady P....... Just as with terror attacks in the UK over the years, it is almost impossible to give accurate figures straight away. Much of what you read will be inaccurate due to victims going to different hospitals. Ive always found its usually 24 hours before the real figure emerges.

What nonsense is it, that whatever your political views, you bomb and maim innocent civillians.

Sorry if it came across as insensitive. My heart aches for the dead, the wounded, and the ones who have to deal with the slowly unfolding nightmare we're watching right now. I stand by my words, we have been very, very, very lucky so far. Up until this afternoon, we could all go to a mass spectator event knowing that, for the most part, nothing like this would ever happen.
A few months ago, at the range I go shoot at, we had a guest who was an instructor for an advanced shooting class in the area. He was an Israeli, and he remarked at how surprised he was to see how little we seem to be aware of how easy it is for an attack like this. He remarked about things like how the trashcans could be used to conceal explosives, how easy it would be to park large trucks near significant numbers of people, stuff like that. Nice fella, wasn't condescending at all, just surprised at how lassez-faire we are considering our position in the world.

Call me insensitive, call me a jerk. I don't care. I am only pointing out the obvious here.

jmo but the term "we've been overdue for something like this" can mean different things to different people.. I was just thinking yesterday that AlQueda has been quiet, and news since OBL was killed had pivoted to Iran and now North Korea.. and no real news on AQ.. I was asking myself that maybe cutting the head off (OBL) did kill the snake (AQ) and they are too fragmented now... but today, I dunno.. too early to know if its them or a domestic nutbar..

Israelis live a different life, terror attacks are expected, everyone there must do a stint in the military, women included, no molly coddling for the fairer sex either.. yes, it is different there.. they are more on guard and think in terms of a bomb room in their apartment building, hotel, etc & you have to know where its located so when you hear sirens you get to that room asap.. who in the US has a bomb room? I guess since they grow up with that constant threat, they are used to thinking in that way and seeing possible bomb hiding places in trash cans, etc.. and imo they are pretty tough vigilant people, cuz they have to be.. personally, I would not want to grow up in that kind of environment tho..

Boston media is reporting 2 dead, one being an 8 year old child, and 98 injured.

The are NO suspects in custody.

Saudi National Apprehended

Investigators have a suspect — a Saudi Arabian national — in the horrific Boston Marathon bombings, The Post has learned. Law enforcement sources said the 20-year-old suspect was under guard at an undisclosed Boston hospital. It was not immediately clear why the man was hospitalized and whether he was injured in the attack or in his apprehension... In addition, Boston police have has surveillance video of someone bringing multiple backpacks to blast site, according to CBS News.

I know I shouldn't even ask, but it the NYP the only source that is quoting twelve dead instead of two? I know how difficult it is to get any accuracy during an incident of this nature.

According to the Boston Police Commissioner, there is no one in custody and according to WGBH as of a few minutes ago there were still only 2 dead but many with "life threatening injuries".

I know, Ps. I'm sure this is the wrong time for Me to bring it up, but I find news coverage regarding incidents like this very frustrating. I may be alone in thinking this way, but I would rather have accuracy. The higher the numbers reported makes it more difficult for the public and the agencies that are for public support.

The report of 2 dead has an earlier time stamp. The report of 12 is claimed to have been confirmed by federal law enforcement, but I have not seen that number elsewhere. The report of 50 injured is inaccurate, however. The injured count appears to be at least 98:

Brigham and Women’s Hospital says it’s treating as many as 26 patients from ages 3 to 62 years old injured in the blast. 22 are at Massachusetts General Hospital, six of them in critical condition. 21 are at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Boston Medical Center is treating 20 patients, including two children, most of whom have received lower leg injuries and Tufts Medical is treating 9 patients. ~CBS Boston

They are, unfortunately, expecting more fatalities before the night is over.

Its a problem with 24 hour news channels and the internet. They all want instant news and data. Oddly enouhg, lack of which was the problem in the old days.

Re-read the post Aswad was answering. He wasnt accusing us of anything, quite the reverse in fact.

OK, I get it. Carry on.

mnottertail -> RE: Explosions at Boston Marathon (4/15/2013 4:57:21 PM)

Let's pause a moment and remember that Boston IS New England and there are a passle of people there that have ties to this day to the old country, and no small portion of them England.   Obviously, more Irish ties, but still.   You could be talkiing to their relatives, and while on that subject a great deal of people from all over the globe have worries becasue a great deal of people come from all over the globe to run that marathon.

So.......this is worldwide disaster.  Even muslims and jews and christians and australians run in that marathon.

They need to deactivate one. Look at the components. Keep some clues.

That's what they're saying...these two undetonated bombs will provide "substantial links to the person(s) involved".

CNN has 132 injured, 17 in critical condition.

Ball bearings used in the bombs, per dr.

Two strands of thought here.

1) The may have dealt with harmless backpacks people have dropped in the initial chaos. To my shame the bomb squad got called to a firm I worked at. I had taken a part wrapped in brown paper to a colleague and left it unattended in receeption while we spent the afternoon drinking. [8|]

2) if they do indeed have an unexploded bomb, not only is it possibly to get forensic clues, most bombmakers have a personal style. IE how they do the soldering etc, or some small quirk which identifies them.

TricklessMagic -> RE: Explosions at Boston Marathon (4/15/2013 5:12:15 PM)

Oy Gevalt. Seriously, anyone who has read my posts knows I am out there by most left leaning opinions, but jokes about this is seriously in poor taste. At times like this we should all take the High Road and pray for the families of the injured and departed as well as the injured and departed. Those who will have survived this horror, either injured, having a loved one injured, losing a loved one, or simply having witnessed this event will be greatly harmed for a long long time. PTSD is a viscous and horrific thing. Those of us who may not agree with the politics of the Northeast, or New England should still take the High Road and remain classy and offer our prayers and condolences. Not instantly use this event to wax logic over ulterior agendas. Now is not a time for ridicule or insult. Now is the time to grieve and try to begin whatever healing that can be begun. We'll have years to wax over this instance in history. While it is unique to America it is all too common in other parts of the world.

I fear the explosives will be tannerite based, having seen the footage of one of the explosion. Tannerite is easily purchased and commonly sold online. Rigging a time delayed detonator is ridiculously easy and the detonating cap could easily be a string of magnum rifle primers set off by a black powder charge set off by the time delayed detonator and an electrical charge.

Based on what the explosion looked like these devices were likely crude in detonation method as well as explosive makeup. Something anybody with thirty minutes to spend on youtube could create.

Yep. I do have a friend who has a friend who ran in that race. He's OK, though, apparently.
