I imagine I'm not the only one who would love you to weigh in on the issue of why it happens to collarchat and not collarme (the profile side).

As needlesandpins pointed out, Collarme and Collarchat are not simply different "sides" of the same site. They are, in fact, two different sites that are hosted on two different servers. The issues that affect one, and the path used to reach it, will not hold the same for the other.

I have noticed chrome sometimes has CM on it's list of dangerous websites and gives me an error warning. This is fairly new, the past month or so???

I haven't noticed that with Chrome's built-in blacklist. Are you perhaps running third-party security software with a browser plugin? I know the McAfee has occasionally listed Collarme.com as potentially unsafe.

I am curious, however, how so many people could be having trouble with the paths/handshake thing. I realize a few people are not having any problems getting on this side at all, but the majority is. Simply looking at what new posts have occurred over the last couple of weeks will confirm that.

There has to be some way to deal with and fix the problem, since it hasn't always existed.

The issue has been pretty widespread. My guess would be that there were routing issues on the network somewhere fairly near Collarchat's server. Since many paths to the server converge on those points, a significant percentage of users would be affected.

It is definitely possible to fix a routing issue, but you have to figure out where along the network packets are being swallowed or sent into endless loops, which isn't always easy. Then, if the issue is not within your own network, you may need to work with third parties to get things resolved.

i'm a member on much bigger forums than this with tons more traffic and content. they don't have the issues this site does because they are running modern programing. it has been said before that this forum is running on unsuitable programing.

It's true that this site runs on pretty ancient software that could use an update but, at least in this case, I don't think that is likely to be the issue.

Based on what I have seen with it, I would agree with others it could be the sites programming or even more then likely, DB issues. There may simply be too much data on the site, it is causing DB interaction issues (like contention) and is locking users out. I don't think it is os related or browser related, I suspect if someone is getting in when others aren't it could be their username in the db is in such a place the software can access it. I have tried multiple platforms and OS's and browsers and when Betsy is down, it is down.

If it was a load issue, you would expect connectivity issues to impact everyone and to have sluggish performance for people who did manage to connect. This wasn't the case: connection from some networks was reliable and fast. From others, it was impossible. This points to a network issue, albeit not one local to end users. Also, the failure was during the TCP handshake; any explanation that depends on data exchanged beyond that (e.g. a username) fails to explain the actual problem. The only server-based explanation would be one in which the server was selectively (but intermittently) ignoring connection requests from specific IP addresses. While possible, this seems unlikely.

Thanks for the response. Yes, I have McAfee.

I know they are two different sites, but have been told they share the same owner. My point is that one site is going down so often it's losing members, while the other site is *always* up and running, and it *just so happens* to be the one generating income.

Lately, I have been having major issues getting the boards to load. Just this site.

Has anyone else been fighting this?

CM works just fine. I did contact Admin and they said they were also having issues with it as well.

Just posting to commiserate.

I've only had problems with collarchat because I have no fingers.

(It's been an ongoing thing frankly...I don't see it related to their technology).

Nice post, shallowdeep.

If possible, try using some proxy servers. A proxy adds an intermediate destination between your computer and the final destination server. This may force traffic with the server along a working path.

To provide data to those working on this, I've already tried going to CC with my naked IP (USA); and through three proxies, each from a different European country. No connection each time. Though today is well behaved.

Thanks for the response. Yes, I have McAfee.

McAfee yellowflags CM, though I'm not sure why. If you look at McAfee's intersite map, they have CM connected only to green sites (i.e., safe sites). About a year ago, I disabled some of the Flash objects on the CM home page, because they intermittently crashed my browser. That's the only thing I've personally noticed that would cause CM to be flagged for a technical (as opposed to a moralistic) reason.

I agree. In particular, I don't think it's a DNS issue, because I've gotten offline messages when using a direct IP address. I think packets know where they are supposed to go, and either never arrive, or the ack never returns.

ShallowDeep seems to have a handle on it; it is obvious to me that it is a network issue.

I'll be back home on Tuesday. I have more tools available to me there. If the admins want my help I can try to track some things down then.

I will not though, under any circumstances, become a mod. I'm a sadist, not a masochist.

I, like some others, also cannot access the site 95% of the time, even with a perfectly functioning wifi that works on plenty of other sites.

Ever since I posted to this thread I have had no issues at all with connectivity - either on my laptop (latest version of Firefox) or my iPhone.

It's like magic.
