Oooohhh, I just thought of an encouraging idea! How about saving all that money for shoes?! [:D] M

Spiritedsub2 -> RE: I'm quitting, finally (4/30/2013 10:39:25 AM)

Not putting nicotine into my system via gum or patch helped me quit; we wouldn't recommend alcohol to an alcoholic trying to quit drinking. I spent a lot of time in the first week on this website: www.whyquit.com
It's also fun to calculate how many cigarettes you haven't smoked and how much money you've saved; there are several online. Suck on a cinnamon stick (in the spice aisle, not candy), shaped like a cigarette and not fattening. I'm sure there are lots of other ideas on this forum for entertaining your mouth without cigarettes!

theshytype -> RE: I'm quitting, finally (4/30/2013 11:07:48 AM)

Thank you for the website! I'll give it a try.

I have been using an empty pen casing. It keeps my mouth and fingers busy (minds out of the gutters - its just too easy). Anytime I feel as though I may hyperventilate, I "inhale" a deep breath from it.

FrostedFlake -> RE: I'm quitting, finally (4/30/2013 11:18:09 AM)

One or two things more I might suggest. Try to add up how many cigs you have already smoked.

Pack a day x 20 x 365 x 25 = 182,500 x 1 gram (just a guess) = 182.5 kilos x 2.2 = 401.5 pounds.

That is more than thrice my weight. A big load to be carrying to where ever it is I'm going.

This was my GT. It was a great bike. It got hit by a car. This was because I was riding on the sidewalk, against the direction of traffic. And then I broke another rule. Getting away with two is much harder than one.

I came to an intersection. There was a stop sign. A car was 'stopping'. In fact, as should have occurred to me, the drivers foot was on the brake, but she was not stopping. Like most drivers, she was treating the stop sign as if it read YIELD. She was looking to see if it was 'safe' to proceed. She was looking at traffic. I was approaching from the other direction. Invisible. The clue I missed was, I had not established eye contact before proceeding into harms way. When she saw her way clear, her foot came off the brake. Her hood jumped. Prompting me to remove my foot from between car and bike. My best move of the day.

When her eyes came forward and she saw me, her foot came down on the brake again. That helped a lot. Had she already shifted her foot to the gas, I'd've been so very thoroughly fucked. As it was, my pedal made a thumbprint size dent in her license plate. I managed to countersteer, absorbed the impact, stayed upright on my Michelins. Everything on my bike that could be bent was bent.

End of a great machine. 25 miles from home, no bus. But it could have gone badly. Easily and quick. Riding is a great thing to do, especially when you are ditching cigs. But there are rules to the game. Break 'em and pay. ALWAYS make eye contact before riding in front of a car, unless other traffic prevents it from moving. Even if that means you have to stop and wait.

FrostedFlake -> RE: I'm quitting, finally (4/30/2013 11:56:14 AM)

This was my Univega Team Alpina. Another great bike.

[image]local://upfiles/769649/EE9F075FBFEC43DAA0B49D69FC25D5B2.jpg[/image]

Note the rack is the same one as on the GT. This bike was of the sort to return the affection it earned. It had an interesting bar. As my back improved, I gradually moved the bar forward and down. It had great welds. It was made of good steel. 33 pounds with bags, tools and a quart. It had lights It had an XTR suite. I still have the lock. And that is why it is gone.

If you don't have a bike, and want one, allow me to make a suggestion. For $250, you can have this one :

Univega Alpina 7000

This one is better than mine was in some ways, and except for reflective sidewalls, as good as my bike in every other way.

It has an aluminum frame, made of 7005, not 6061. 7005 can be welded. 6061 needs extensive heat treating after welding. It has 27 gears that look good. Avid brakes. A manitou fork, with a left boot in need of attention. A wilderness trail bikes saddle, that needs to be tilted forward some. The pedals have studs that might work well. Tires look like they won't create tread vibration. Quick releases that need to be swapped to the other side of the bike, leaving nothing to screw up on the lay down side.

Add lights, a greenfield kickstand, a rack, bags, some bungies, a rear fender, a tool kit and a good lock, and you have the total package. A good bike would do you good. As a gift to yourself in honor of retiring from smoking, it makes sense. As a lifestyle change, it makes even more sense. And at a pack a day, $6 a pack, $250 goes by in 6 weeks.

FunCouple5280 -> RE: I'm quitting, finally (4/30/2013 12:28:41 PM)

If you can, refrain from drinking or any other drugs while you are quitting. They curb your will power. That really helped me.

Good luck!

However, if cold turkey fails too miserably, ecigs can be a good crutch to reprogam your triggers so at least the smell of tobacco no longer gets you going.

FrostedFlake -> RE: I'm quitting, finally (4/30/2013 1:04:12 PM)

I almost forgot to mention. Most helmets SUCK !!!!!

Get one of these.

Manufacturers Site

Just to be sure you hear this, DON'T use expanded polystyrene foam. That it a use it once and throw it away product. Use terrycloth covered foam rubber, like the helmet I linked to has.

theshytype -> RE: I'm quitting, finally (4/30/2013 3:34:41 PM)

Ouch! I'm glad you walked away from that ok and is a very good reason to wear a helmet! I'm sure the driver felt awful, I know I would have.
I could really use a nice bike ride right about now! It's sad, it's been a very long time since I've been on one so your assumption that I know next to nothing about them is spot on. The extent of my knowledge: two wheels, seat, good to go.
Very helpful information! And putting a weight on the cigarettes...that's amazing. Yuck!

FunCouple, when I drink I do tend to chain smoke. I'm not a huge drinker but have been contemplating mixing one up to help me relax. That's a good reminder as to why I shouldn't.

Congrats to you and all the best for this challenging, life-affirming journey. You're giving yourself--and those who love you--an invaluable gift. You and they are worth it.

In my own struggles with addictive behavior, I've sometimes drawn solace from this favorite in the Book of Common Prayer:

O blessed Lord, you ministered to all who came to you: Look
with compassion upon all who through addiction have lost
their health and freedom. Restore to them the assurance of
your unfailing mercy; remove from them the fears that beset
them; strengthen them in the work of their recovery; and to
those who care for them, give patient understanding and
persevering love. Amen.

I always change "them" to "us."

I know "God talk" isn't for everyone, and I debated about sharing this. If it resonates for you, great. If not, please take it as a well-meant verbal hug from another traveler on the road to recovery.

A votre sante!

I started a thread on Minimizing Chantix side effects for my ex last year.

Best of luck to you!

I woke up this morning and decided on a whim to quit smoking. Not sure why today of all days.  Especially since the last few days have been horrid.

I have to say, with an exception to this increasing urge to seriously hurt someone, it's going pretty well.   Since any other attempt prior to this never made it past two hours, I'm taking today's progress as a good sign! That, and everyone around me has made it out alive. Of course, there's always tomorrow...

Gawdammit....keep it going...do it for me (do it for you...hell...do it for both of us)...I haven't done it yet...I'm still trying.

If you do it (and there are more than a few who are ready to fly out to Seattle to beat my ass {which, frankly, I'm all for but}...this is a good thing...I hope you make it kiddo...it's tough).

DO IT!!!!!

(Then tell ME how to do it!!!!!).

Ned is the MAN.

Here he is in a field of 2500 racers, two years ago.

When Ned crosses the finish line, start counting.

Another view of the race.

Did I mention Neds' birthday was in 1955 ?

No, God talk is not something I practice. BUT, I realize that when someone offers such words that it's important to them so it still very much means something to me. I do appreciate your sharing this and does, very much so, help! Thank you!

Thank you!
That was an interesting read. I'm still too afraid to attempt it again. I was thoroughly disturbed by my nightmares.

Overall, how bad were his side effects? (I hope not ex because of the mood swings!)

lovethyself -> RE: I'm quitting, finally (4/30/2013 7:02:38 PM)

Good luck!!! I hope you succeed.

I've been trying to quit for a while now, not cold turkey, but through cutting down. I'm down to 4 a day. I would love to hear how you (or anyone else) handles the habit forming patterns that get ingrained. The ones for me that are hardest to avoid are the coffee break smokes.

Please keep us posted on your progress.

Yeah, I'm thinking a beating would almost be considered more of positive reinforcement for bad behavior [:D]
It certainly isn't easy and whenever you are ready, I'll be cheering you on as well!

All I can say is WOW.
I also really love his response to the question "If you were a part on a bike what would it be and why?"

That's great! Keep at it! I hope you succeed also!

I do have problems with my usual daily patterns. I've had a few people recommend to me that I completely rearrange my days to avoid the pattern. Unfortunately for me, and many others I know, it's just not entirely possible.
Also, for me, I think that's the worst thing I can do. I enjoy that break and taking it away is almost punishing myself. Usually, I just want to get outside away from everything and think (or not). Grabbing a smoke has been my excuse to snatch that break. It's actually helped me to just walk outside and sit or pace. I find that I don't need the smoke, I just needed the break. I've been trying to pinpoint what my patterns are, why, what I'm really gaining from it, and how I can improve it.

absolutchocolat -> RE: I'm quitting, finally (4/30/2013 8:34:44 PM)

Congrats! I am trying to quit myself. Pack is empty, and you've given me courage to stop.
