I'm guessing you're not inspired by beautiful, dreamy shoes?
I can't wear fabulous shoes anymore, but still love them. [:D] M

Congrats! I am trying to quit myself. Pack is empty, and you've given me courage to stop.

Yay!!! You can do it!

Lol. While I do love shoes, my weakness tends to be coats. And lingerie. Ooooh, and purses. Who am I kidding. If it's pretty, then I'm inspired!

Awh, I love nice purses. I have cut back though with limited budget, and too many bags hanging up, not being used.
How is it going today? How can we be supportive? M

I woke up this morning and decided on a whim to quit smoking. Not sure why today of all days.  Especially since the last few days have been horrid.

I have to say, with an exception to this increasing urge to seriously hurt someone, it's going pretty well.   Since any other attempt prior to this never made it past two hours, I'm taking today's progress as a good sign! That, and everyone around me has made it out alive. Of course, there's always tomorrow...

Good luck and YAY!!!!!

Generic dude and I are both former smokers. It was probably harder for me to stop than him but it took him a lot longer. For him, giving up soda, his precious Pepsi, was ALOT harder.

theshytype -> RE: I'm quitting, finally (5/1/2013 6:39:57 AM)

I'm doing pretty good this morning! This thread is helping me tremendously!
I can't thank everyone enough for all of the well wishes and advice.

LaT, that's awesome for both of you! I understand the pop addiction (but I don't understand the choice of Pepsi over Coke)! Several years ago I gave it up. That was very difficult!

Duskypearls -> RE: I'm quitting, finally (5/1/2013 7:00:34 AM)

Prayer can be very helpful, if you petition with a deep desire to release the need to smoke. Words alone won't cut it. Wait until you can do it with deep, authentic feeling.

First four days are the toughest...including the first four nights. If you can cross that hump, it gets a LOT easier.

It will never go away. I wanted one today. But it does fade; you will get the urges less, later. I promise.

Rasciallymisty -> RE: I'm quitting, finally (5/3/2013 4:59:22 AM)

Congrats Shy [sm=cheering.gif] I quit 11 1/2 years ago and do not miss it at all. This passed year my kids all gave it up also. Brad { dom boyfriend} had COPD and a lot of other lung diseases and seeing him gasping for air and being on oxygen 24/7/365 made a lasting impression on them.

Hope you and all the others that are trying to quit succeed...best of luck to you.

For us, it actually did go away. We are now those horrible people that smokers hate. If you smoke my nose will know and I will not want to be near you at all. Smokers stink.

I've discovered that! The third day was the worst. I royally blew up at my husband for no good reason, to which he replied by a kiss on the forehead, a hug, and 'I love you' as he walked out the door for work. That definitely made day 4 a little better.
I also forewarned my kiddos and they have been really supportive as well, helping me around the house and things. They've been wanting me to quit for a long time.

It's getting a little easier, I think. I definitely could not do this without all the wonderful support.

Thank you! Congrats to you and your kids, that's great!

I remember as a child my grandfather was restricted to a tank and it creeped me out. I didn't understand it, and I certainly don't want that to be me creeping out my own grand kids.

LaT, even as a smoker, smokers stink to me. It's one of those really obnoxious smells...especially in the winter.

tommonymous -> RE: I'm quitting, finally (5/3/2013 7:46:10 PM)

Hey theshytype, how's your project coming? Well, I hope. It's a pretty momentous event.

FWIW, I actually read someplace that impulse quitters (as opposed to planned, "I'll do it when...", quitters) actually have a higher success rate. So, you've got that going for you, which is nice.

TieMeInKnottss -> RE: I'm quitting, finally (5/3/2013 8:37:09 PM)

I quit in 2000 so it has now been (in June ) 13 years. I smoked for 10 years so it was pretty ingrained. I had no interest in quitting more than once so it was a hugely serious commitment to me. First, recognize you are dealing with 2 separate things-one is a habit & the other is an addiction-so it requires a 2 prong approach. I did the patch & found it enormously helpful. Recognize nicotine for what it is-a drug. The only drug more addictive than nicotine is heroin (one of my approaches was to research the impacts on the brain) so treat it the same...once you are free of it don't EVER believe you can have one cigarette, one puff...The neuroreceptors in your brain take only one "re-introduction" to nicotine to make them "recognize, recall, and become addicted"

ShaharThorne -> RE: I'm quitting, finally (5/4/2013 2:10:02 PM)

I quit over 25 years ago. Once in a while I crave it...but the smoke makes me sick.

Bo has to smoke and I requested that he does not do it around Lizard because of her asthma. When I go visit them, I empty the ashtray, wash it out and put it back for him when he comes home. We split computer usage time (I get it when he goes to work).

BlkTallFullfig -> RE: I'm quitting, finally (5/4/2013 2:34:47 PM)

I hope you're still going strong! [sm=cheerleader.gif] M

theshytype -> RE: I'm quitting, finally (5/4/2013 5:45:10 PM)

Tommonymous, that makes me more hopeful!

TMIK, that makes a lot of sense and I did not even think about that. I have cheated (bad me) and figured its ok because it made me sick to my stomach like Shahar mentioned, but it most likely did much more harm than good.

I'm still doing pretty good. Besides the cheat I've mentioned, I'm not thinking about them near as much, only when I'm not keeping busy I've noticed. So, I've been trying to keep busy.

Thank you, BTF!!!!

littleclip -> RE: I'm quitting, finally (5/4/2013 6:03:37 PM)

one thing that has helped many quit is vapor pipes not the e-cigs it can be flavored with thousands of flavors and the nicotine level is set by you and the best part is thers no smoke so the cilia in your lungs start working and moving the flem out there is no smell when you are near someone using a vapor pipe can be used anywhere so you can train yourself to not light up and to more easily quit without the side effects as some meds have chantix and welbutrin

Progress, not perfection.

You're making a big, awesome change, and it sounds like it's largely going well. Congrats and keep going!

theshytype -> RE: I'm quitting, finally (5/4/2013 6:27:08 PM)

Thank you, DC!

I'll have to look into the vapor pipe - I've never heard of those before. Thank you, clip!
