The usual device is to have a narrator who can't understand the language, but who either speculate about its meaning, or translate by saying, "Later, I found out that this means..."

The occasional use of native-language words is one of the few things that the Gor novels get right - there, they are used very sparingly.

i am a trekkie, read hundreds of the books.. old, next, voyager, DS9, and all the others popping up... Love them.

Most of the books when they use the alien language do NOT put a translation however, it usually rather easy to see what they are saying. Some books i have noticed DO give a glossary, but not many.

Here is the set up for how the heroines had their limited grasp of his language;

“Eeew… how am I supposed to get him to drink this.” Myri asked her face contorted against the awful aroma. “Here Beeta you do it.”
“No way! I’m taking the easy road.” She darted off to the hammock.
“You tell him this Myri: Bosh šur uk ulli, ubar.” She waited
“Bosh shur uck yulli, oobar?” She struggled around the words.
“No. Bosh sh`ur. Sh`ur you must say the sh very quickly.” Zeta waited.
“Bosh`…”
“No. Repeat this, Bosh. Long sh sound.” Zeta enunciated the word.
“Bosh.” Myri repeated.
“Sh`oor.”
“Sh`oor.” Myri said snapping off the ‘sh’ to make it short.
“Uh’k.” She stressed the k sound.
“Uh’k.” Myri in turn stressed the k.
“Ool-lee.” Zeta exaggerated the enunciation of the word.
“Ool’e.”
“No, listen; Ool-lee.” Zeta stressed the word.
“Ool-lee.”
“Good.” Zeta started.
“Good.” Myri said.
“No Myri, I mean your doing good.” Zeta smiled at her.
“Myri.” Ash called from the fire.
“What?” Myri looked back at her.
“Bosh should chut smatterling.” Ash called back to her.
“What?” Myri’s face twisted in confusion.
“Itur bosh forget how št tur smatterling?” Ash shot this at her like a bullet. “Or has it been to many years?”
“Ash, I don’t …” Understanding crossed her face. “Um… Yes, tur smatterling. Ši hal been a long tempus since elon hal’a tur’e smatterling.”
“Smatterling, Boš ši rattling umna pa smaterling ur out le?” Zabeeta rattled it off at the sisters.
“Zabeeta, et forgot bosh fem’e how št tur smaterling.” They all began to giggle.
“That’s enough of that Kryt girls!” Uller scowled at them. “Došda is the only tongue we use here!”
“Uller.” Zeta looked at him. “How do the… where did they learn to do that?”
“From their mother, she used to speak her tongue to them when they were babes. Myri learned a little of it, and a little Došda and threw it together in what their mother called smatterling.” He rubbed at his head.

Now this section is with the youngest heroine and she evolves the understanding of the language. Everything in { } is thoughts and that is where she translates for the reader.

“I don’t understand you. I am sorry.” I thought for a moment. “ Ah Smatterling! Bosh need š vadow something.”
“Vadow?”
After a few bites it didn’t take him long to acquire quite an apatite. I fed him and then cleaned him up. I brushed out his hair and then tied some fabric into a ratoya, which was made nearly the same as the skirt like covering we found him in. this was the first man I have got to ex… see up close. It made me feel pretty hot. But he was a man!
“Vashanna, et žahtan stolar. Et žahtan wulor rashala.”
“Need… sun!” {Oh got it.}
I helped him up and took him outside. He staggered about, and gained his footing. He went strait to the stream and lay in it.
“Vashanna. Bosh nyatova reka le!”
{You… something… join me.}  I went over to him and he quickly grabbed my ankle and tugged me in.
“You beast!” I grabbed him and dunked his head. He looked up at me with water dripping from his eyelids, and I got the biggest fit of the giggles.
“Bosh rue junta!”
{You… um… Hussy!}
“Hussy am I!” I splashed his face real good, and I was sure I was wining till he pinned me down and played dirty. He kissed me.
“Et hal’a atla yar’um bosh!”
“Okay now your being a man!” however I really like it. “Time to stop.”
{Et… I have…something… missing you.} That is so sweet.
“Okay maybe a little more play then back to bed with you.”
“Et itur brak ferthaythem bosh.”
“Hmm… I think the language barrier is going to present a challenge for me getting you back in bed.”
“Et rudurus itur brak ferthaythem bosh.”
{I still do not… something …you.}
“Ferthaythem?”
“Ferthaythem, wah… fem tur? Wah, fem lokwa.” He narrowed his gaze at me. “Kuri moda šur bosh jonga’um rue junta?”
{Know speak? Know words… Oh understand! Ferthaythem!}
“Ah! Little hussy! Keep calling me that mister and you have had it!”

As you can see it is written for the reader to discover his meaning as the heroines do.

It is a bit too much, Wulfchyld. Unless you intend it as a grammar book? If not, then it is boring. (I didn't read all of it.) I would advise to lighten up and to go a bit more slowly. You can put most of this in, but I would spread it across more pages and across different scenes. It is better to use the context to suggest meaning and to let the reader come to his own conclusions - as much as possible.

I now have read the second part. I like it - but I still have my doubts.

So your saying that anyone ho likes having a hobby outside of D/s are strange, tell me are you hobbies strange or are they the only good ones. Don't judge someone because of the TV they watch. Remember you would hate to be judged on what you do.

If you follow the book you learn the language as the heroin's do and there is a dictionary in the back of the book. It has finally occurred to me that a lot of people do not want to be mystified by the alien tongue and want to know what he is saying right then. It makes for an interesting read as it is because there is dialogue that is going on that the heroines discover later on that makes for some humorous moments in the story. I would rather not translate what it is he is saying, but for casual readers they may get confounded with it and not read on.

So i am confronted with dilemma of whether or not to translate them in the passages.

I had missed this post earlier. The dictionary in the back is good. Perhaps your readers will indicate whether they would like some dialogue translated in whole. If so, you could attach a reference number in superscript to the particular dialogue and put the translated dialogue in a list of notes in the back of the books.

I have always liked StarTrek Loki, but I don't read any of the books. I have found that holograms are much more visually stimulating. OK..gotta go, have to beam down and get a cup of coffee...twice (you do realize she's alien, right?) brewed some new blend.

Oh man Scooter! Lets paint her green!

*waits for the photo's of a twicehappy orion slave girl*

Loki you are a bad influence on my Master.

Ok, but if i have to use the power washer to get it off(ummm, the paint, not....er....IT) though i suppose"it"will end up with green paint on it somehow..........

Green pics, genie pics, hey why not ask for a video of me dancing too, lol.

Wellllll hell, if I said anything about having hobbies outside of D/s is strange I must be one strange broad! Oh wait, I am....silly me!!! I am also wacky, wierd and most of all I have a very obnoxious sense of humour that is never intentionally mean spirited. SOOOO, ya'all have two choices.....you can either block me ORRR get your panties/boxers/space drawers unbunched and take my jesting in the manner it was meant. AND since I am an incorrigable smart ass tease feel that wouldn't fire it off if I couldn't take it as well.....feel free. In FACT I will even be so generous as to give you ammunition! Lets seee......... I have a pirate fetish thank you to the delish Capt Jack Sparrow " ahhh pirate!!" although none of those guys would have had a chance against me with Keira Knightley, she brings out the pirate in ME.............I just loved Val Kilmer as Doc Holiday  "I'll be your huckleberry" . Charlise Theron just makes me growl...........I am a sucker for 4legged furry babies...........I am living proof that chocolate is an addiction in fact I believe that there are actually FIVE food groups with chocolate being #1...........both my butt and boobs are far bigger than I think they should be, think JLo with bigger tata's, hense the fact that when I run its not a pretty site...........I admit that Loki is pretty darn cute for a guy and way WAY fun to flirt shamelessly with................but then so are all the girls here, and lets not forget benji, after all he is a pup.........
Thats all I can think of presently, please feel free to ask for more later!

Girl the only punishment that comes to mind is torrid moments gasping for air, glistening sweat clinging to sultry skin, lips meeting, tongues dancing...
