FR

Having just removed another virus scanner my son insisted on putting on my comp. Ive always found viruses are aimed at the scanners. if you don't have a scanner you get left alone. I'm told I have my operators built in thing, adding another is a waste of time and money.

Your experience may vary, but ive never had a virus in 15 years.

Really?? How quaint and terribly naive of you.
Where the fuck did you hear this piece of clap-trap nonsense??
That's about as useful as saying "If I can't see you, you can't see me" kind of logic.

Viruses, trojans, worms, hijackers, and various other nasties have NO IDEA whether you have an AV scanner or not.
If you really think by not having one you'll get passed by?? Think again!!

That sort of -head-up-your-ass thinking is dangerous.
If you don't have any AV scanner - how the fuck do you know whether you've got anything on your machine or not?
And you obviously have no idea whatsoever if YOUR machine is sending out viruses to anyone else out there!

Sheeesh! What a dipstick!

That's funny.

I have never had a virus in my PC either. Of course, it helps if you run Ubantu Linux, instead of the expensive virus magnet called Windows.

Mostly truth. But don't forget that they make virus scanners for linux too. Ask yourself, "Why."

Technically you can't catch a virus in linux. They are called "worms" in the *nix world.

he recommends Microsoft's own free anti-virus. Errrrm...., Microsoft Security Essentials...?

before I dispense with AVG myself, perhaps those more knowledgeable will belong with their thoughts on the Microsoft product.

I have Windows XP.

I have had MSE for some time, but quite frequently when there was a patch day for Windows, the antivirus was automatically disabled afterwards. Since I never found a way to enable MSE again, I had to remove the previous one from my computer and next download another MSE to have an enabled MSE again.

I eventually got fed up with that hassle, and the next time when MSE was disabled, I removed it and downloaded Avast! Except for the daily update notices and subsequent hysterical screams that the security situation of my computer is critical - all of which I conveniently ignore, as I do not understand what I should do about it anyway - thus far I am very content with Avast!

In settings is languages.
You have to select the other language you want to download it first, and then pick it once you have done that.

One thing that I wanted to add about the paid version of Avast. They say that your renewal begins on the day when your current subscription expires so that if you renew early you do not lose any time being covered. My experience is that this is not the case. If you renew 30 days before your expiration then your new subscription starts then - and you just threw away 30 days of coverage. I like the product but I renew on the day that it expires.

Malwarebytes is good too.

The one thing to consider is that there isn't any one program that catches everything bad, so you should always use more than one AV program. Have only one running continuously in background and run any others on a regular schedule or when you think you might have a problem. Also before running any of them always download the latest definition updates.

I use Malwarebytes and AVG (both free) and they keep the system humming nicely. I used to use Spybot in lieu of AVG but I don't like it since they came out with the 2.0 version.

Malwarebytes is not a antivirus program. It is aimed at malware which is another kind of unwelcome program.
