Status: offline 		Whoever is directing, writing and producing the latest edition of Star Trek movies evidently never saw TOS, Next Gen, DS9 or Voyager, or even the animated series on saturday mornings.

The latest installments are shit. The new Kirk is nothing like the William Shatner version, in attitude or anything else for that matter.

First of all, Kirk was given the command of Enterprise by Star Fleet, not because the Captain died. He served on at least 3 starships prior to being promoted to command of the Enterprise.

In the new movie, the Enterprise crashes to earth, which would have made the TOS Enterprise NCC-1701-A.

I didnt see the first movie after seeing the trailers, and I wont see this one. They dont follow the history as established by Gene Roddenberry, he is rolling in his grave with this shit.

The operating theory is, it ain't the same universe.

No, I really doubt it is supposed to make sense. After all, they didn't have to call it Star Trek. They could have called the frontier after the final frontier.

With JJ Abrams now in control of both ST and Star Wars, there's hope in Fanville that the two universes will meet someday.

Status: offline 		I enjoy a lot of these reboot films, that take a story that has transcended the original medium, and become part of a generational culture.

Star Trek was on every afternoon at 4:00 when I was kid growing up through Portland winters. I've proably seen every episode that made it into syndication. And it stops there.

Do I give one flying fuck at a rolling donut that they don't get the Vulcan neck pinch exactly right? No. Not one more than what I give at having called whatever it is by the wrong name.

Let's let Shatner make it clear, shall we?

Status: offline 		For me a movie is just a movie. It is there to entertain me, unless it is history and to that I would include mythology, it need not be a duplicate of the original. I loved Roddenberry but he wrote fiction. So for me the path they take to entertain me doesn't need to have a bible, it only needs a logical direction and a decent plot. The first movie was fantastic. I will be seeing the next.

which I believe will fail, but who cares...
They have some great space battles and what
not. They seem to be trying to break into pop
culture with the style.

Good luck I guess, I'll be surprised if there is a
third movie but not overly so since they have
rebooted the hulk an absurd amount of times
just to keep movie people in work seems like...

As movies the JJA's are very very watchable, but
if your hoping to hop back onto the bridge with
the kirk of old, your going to be disappointed.

Hang a mo.

Leonard Nimoy played the original Spock in the new Star Trek film. It is just that he is not in the same universe the original Star Trek Show was set in. The mere presence of Nimoy as the original Spock more than implies a hat tip to the original series.

Spoiler alert.

It seems Spock fucked up. So the bad guys grabbed him, said, "Let our planet get waxed, will you? We'll show you what we do to guys who make stupid promises!" Then they spent several movies before this one dragging Spock around from universe to universe to watch his own planet get waxed several times. Y'know. Because it takes quite a bit to get through that thick skull. Eventually, they crash headlong into this movie, so, of course, there is one. And of course, none of the characters in it are the same, despite for some reason having the same names. Not even the original Spock, who is just a blubbering tub of jello.

Or so I gather.

I might have been high at the time.

ETA : I thought Bakula did a great job. If you want to point fingers, what about Voyager?

Status: offline 		They is supposed to be a reboot, not a remake. Abrams wanted to start over, like they did in Batman with Bale, and in this new Superman. The series needed the jump in tech, graphical design, and visceral action, and these movies provide that. I'm not going to get into a debate over the myriad of Star Trek series and spin-offs, that could take a whole nother thread (I for one think even Next Gen did injustice to classic Kirk). Don't go into them expecting The Shatner fist-pumping before he fires that torpedo up Khan's wazoo, and you will find them rather enjoyable.

The only SW movie I enjoyed was the very first one, so to me, Abrams is very likely to lift the franchise up, not knock it down.

Status: offline 		I went to see the second the other day and I thought it was awesome, I love that it has a flavour of the original characters with modernisation. Granted they are not identical but I think thats the point. It honestly felt a huge range of emotions watching the film, I was shocked at how good it was to be fair. Cumberbatch was also particularly amazing.

As a long-time Trekker, I feel the same way, although there are some Trekkers who liked the first Abrams installment.

I got the idea that it was an alternate universe - which is all well and good, but I think what bothered me about it was that they went through a series of unlikely and contrived situations just so they would end up with the exact same characters that were on TOS - even going so far as to having Chekov being born four years earlier than in the Prime Universe (just so he could be an Ensign at age 17). It was getting a bit too cheesy at that point, kind of like "Batman in the operating room."

I kind of get the arguments from the other side, that the TOSsers were getting old and no longer a large-enough fanbase to keep the franchise going, so they needed new blood, new actors, and new fans (and lots of action and special effects, just like in Star Wars). The idea is that it appeals to younger fans who weren't around when the earlier productions came out. I get that, too, although it still begs the question as to why they went through all that ridiculous falderal just to get the same exact characters. It seemed a bit too unnecessarily cheesy to me. I thought it was supposed to be movie about Young Kirk and Young Spock, both of whom had to earn their stripes before they got to the level of senior officers.

I'll give the next installment a chance. After all, not every episode of TOS was a winner, and a few of the movies also laid an egg. So, I won't write them off just yet. But I won't go rushing off to the theaters to watch it. I'll wait until it comes on Netflix.
