What Can We Learn From Denmark?

The simple answer is no, the US can not learn from Denmark.. he is comparing apples to oranges, the US would need to have an entire societal & political shift, and a huge one at that.. it just wont happen..

How interesting that the concept of democracy comes to us from Ancient Greece. Their society was actually vastly different from ours. We don't even share something as basic as religion. And yet, we've been able to adapt the concept of democracy to our country. WOW!!!!!! HOW DID WE DO THAT WHEN WE STARTED OUT AS A COLONY UNDER A KING?????

since the 1% run and control the country, I disagree that you actually have a democracy..

Then you don't understand the concept of democracy in Ancient Greece.....

But in all seriousness, the point is that concepts from other countries can, and do, have validity in other countries. Do you really think that every political idea in your country was developed locally? Seriously??

And no one should assume that societal and political shifts can't occur. What makes you so sure such shifts CANNOT occur when they have occurred in the U.S. in the past? What is so different now that shifts cannot take place? Do you really think history is so static? I'm not sure about the world you live in, but in my world, massive shifts occur in different places at different times for different reasons. And they continue to occur. Have you read news about Syria lately, just to give one example....

Real freedom is an illusion that cant actually exist in light of humanity's tendency to take what they want or kill what frightens or disturbs them.

This is not about my country. Its a question about yours and the 1% wont let a shift that threatens their wealth to occur.. The only reason Obamacare is allowed is cuz all that profit they get has been left in the new health care system, thanks to the politicians who they control..

I wasn't going to respond, but you seem to be intentionally missing the point.

So you really think that everything that exists in U.S. politics was developed locally? Is that what you really think?

And what about the American Revolution and the Civil War do you NOT understand?

I'm afraid you don't really understand much about the U.S.

Yes, the US is occupied primarily by primates, who are known to be motivated by both of those things... just like the primates on the rest of the planet.

No, no.

The US invented greed, and the only country in the history of the world that was ever ruled by it. And that's how the country started, and how it will forever be, don't you know.

It's a good thing that Canada isn't ruled by pecuniary interests at all, or anything, which they prove by destroying vast swaths of their ecosystem in digging out some barrels of crud from the tar sands, 4-5 barrels of water rendered undrinkable per one gallon of 'oil,' the government (their government) paying those destroyers of the environment handsomely for their effort.

One percenters only exist in the US, the rest of the world consisting of 85-90 percenters, I guess we should assume.

My friend moved to Germany a few years back. Now if he needs dental work he has to come back to the states to get it done. Seem while they cover everything else, they don't cover any kind of Novocaine or gas. He offered to pay the difference and they wouldn't let him. Kinda far to go for a dental appointment but he says it's worth it.

I'm pretty sure that's either a misunderstanding or straight confabulation.

Would you like me to call up some German buddies in the morning to check your friend's facts for you?

IWYW,

There absolutely has to be a misunderstanding.

While dental coverage is indeed limited, that pertains not to anything elementary.

If you like, you can get in touch with me on the other side, maybe I can help your friend sort the snafu out.

Here is a German dentistry price list that includes general anesthesia, the gas you write about.
http://www.germanmedicine.net/en/pricesdent.html

So clearly you can pay for that.

There is absolutely no question about things like novocaine and laughing gas being covered. They are.
It is a bit different where it comes to general anesthesia. That is only covered in certain cases for dentistry work.

As offered, I would be happy to help your friend.

By the way, do you really believe that dentistry in Germany has to be done without anesthetics?

Fascinating OP. Thanks defiantbadgirl.

We in the West do like to think we are free. We even list our freedoms - free speech, a free media, freedom of religion, right to cast a ballot and express dissent and so on. But what do these freedoms mean to someone about to die an unnecessary death because they can't afford health care? Or a homeless person freezing on a cold winter's night as they huddle under a few cardboard cartons?

Or as ftp asked, are the lives of Bangla Deshi workers less important than our need to obtain cheap clothes?

Do we need to re-think what freedom is?

Laughing gas, nitrous oxide, was general anesthesia. Much safer drugs are used now.

I doubt laugh gas would still be used in Germany (but I'm not sure about it) considering that it's one of the least safe available options.

However, I don't think there is a single dentist in Western Europe who will do serious dental procedures without anesthesia, just like I doubt there is a single dentist who will let a patient pressure him into using anesthesia when it's unnecessary.

If your friend was having something harmless and pain free done, like a dental cleaning or whitening, then yeah, he wouldn't have been able to find a dentist in German that would allow him to pay extra so he could get anesthesia during the procedure.

Anything more invasive than that, and the recommended form of anesthesia would have been included in the price of the procedure.
