garyFLR -> Americans friendlier than Brits? (5/31/2013 12:40:35 AM)

It's occurred to me that all of the people I look forward to hearing from, either on the Message Boards, or in Private Mail are American, or live in America. Are Americans genuinely friendlier than us Brits?

I suppose that there are probably more Americans on CM than from any other part of the world, but, nonetheless...

This is a fun question, deepness, unless it's positive, is not allowed [:)].

LadyPact -> RE: Americans friendlier than Brits? (5/31/2013 12:48:26 AM)

I think it's a demographic thing.

While the UK is fairly well represented here, the USA is by far the greater population of the CM forums. With that, I would have to think that the greater number of folks that you look forward to posting would have a higher percentage being from the States.

I had actually thought there was going to be a shift in numbers a bit when IC (Informed Consent) was shutting down. I think most of their traffic went to Fet, with a very few exceptions.

I've been a bit of an anglophile for quite some time, now. I enjoy a few of the Tele shows (Black Adder, Fawlty Towers, and of course, the lads come to mind). I think most British classic rockers had more of a connection to our own native music than some of us did (Listen to Eric Clapton play the blues).

Some years back (Geez! It's been almost 10), I almost married a Brummie bint that lived in Wales.

I will say that in real life and on these boards, I notice quite a bit of hostility coming from that side of the pond, directed at us. I have heard July 4th referred to as: "Good Riddence to Bad Rubbish Day" more than once, for example.

However, I don't think we're friendlier. I just think we're a bit more tolerant.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

I think probably some individuals are friendlier than others, I don't think nationality really comes into it. 'We' statements don't really make sense when you are talking about millions upon millions of people, in my opinion anyway.

Three points:-

1. Tolerance - we invented tolerance. How very dare you? [:D]

2. Who says the American war of independence is over? [:D]

3. Eric's great, but, what do you think of Peter Green? & there are many fine players coming out of the States at the moment.

I agree with you about Fawlty Towers, 40 years old & still the best Brit comedy around, I'll probably go down in your estimation, but, I really love The Big Bang Theory.

Ps. I thought it best to put the smileys on!

Best wishes, G.

I think your right, it must be a demographic thing, tried Fetlife, found I couldn't understand it, so gave up after a very short while, & came to you guys [:)].

crazyml -> RE: Americans friendlier than Brits? (5/31/2013 1:54:23 AM)

So, I lived in the USA for a couple of years, and I would say that all in all it's about the same. The biggest difference is the fairly well known difference in terms of how reserved Brits are compared to yanks. This can be confusing at times, because brits can appear a little stand-offish to Americans, and Americans can appear a little "over familiar" to Brits.

I think you're right, nationality doesn't come into it. There are two types of people in this world, those you get on with & those you don't. However, I would say the Americans I've met certainly have more self confidence than, possibly, we do.

1) I always thought you guys invented the "stiff upper lip"? (sorry. I don't know how to do smileys)

B) This would be a great topic for one person I can think of over in P & R so, I will pass on this one.

3) Peter Green? Fleetwood Mac (before they let the girls join)? Yeah, I'm familiar with his work; I just wanted a name that a LOT of people could relate to.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

I think it comes down to the 'self confidence' issue - Brits should work on it a bit more [:)].

Good point, well made.

[:)]

Tusk wasn't a bad album, but, I do agree with you.

Cheers, Gary.

Ticketty boo - A word that has never been used by an American ever in the entire history of the USA [:)].

Apart from Frazier, I think, possibly, maybe.

Thankyou Crazyml!

Almost every top band in the 60s was influenced by it, with bands like The Who and The Small Faces explicitly filling the gap between US and UK Blues. Both the Mods and early Skinheads were into both blues and soul, I grew up in and around Brixton and spent most saturday mornings at a black guys music store, he used to import Blues and Jamacian Ska records.

On to friendliness..... I loved each and every visit to the States, all of them to the South, people were very friendly for the most part. Women asked me to talk as they thought I sounded like Prince Charles, while I sound more like Bob Hoskins. Loved the sun, hated the mosquitos and the fire ants.

garyFLR -> RE: Americans friendlier than Brits? (5/31/2013 3:06:40 AM)

Yardbirds, Graham Bond, Alexis Korner. I love them all, & I'm sure you don't sound like Bob Hoskins [:D]!

Ahhhhh! The Yardbirds! A band, so loaded with guitar talent that Jimmy Page was relegated to playing bass!

Below is a photo of me, playing Jimmy's 1959 Les Paul at the Les Paul Museum in Mahwah, NJ

Now that is cool [:)], what amp are you playing it through?

Please don't get too technical, I'm a trumpet & harmonica player.

G.

Hmmmmm ... not too technical? Okay (and let me speak in English instead of American).

Unfortunately, it was a Marshall Combo (not a two-piece) with valve pre-amp and solid state post amp. Two 10" speakers. Not a great amp but it's what was there.

I've never been able to get a really clean sound out of a Marshall amp. I've always preferred the old Fenders©

Peace and comfort,

Michael

This is interesting and I am just reading and enjoying the chat.

Okay but I do have a question, shouldn't this be in Off Topic Discussion as I am not sure what it has to do with Ask a MIstress? Just wondering as more may read it under off Topics, like me for one since I normally do not come to ask a Mistress. [:D] Just asking and to answer your question Gary.... I think both are friendly, here and across the pond where you are. LOL I do not think the boards always show that because many different opinions come out in some of the topics. [:D]

Hi Michael, I'm blowing through a Fender Excelsior at the moment, love the warm valve sound, although I generally use a Yamaha Stage Pas 300, as it gives me a fighting chance against power mad axe meisters!

Cheers, Gary.
