not so much, the reality is once the genie is out of the bottle, it gives them...who ever they are, to ask for three more genies.
How would you propose anyone, do something about it... with the tech, its only going to encroach more.
not a party thing, but our corporate overlords, and the minion government, and foreign interests. Every country that has the tech has done the same thing.
Reality is nothing will change it
got ideas?

Actually that that`s a bunch of shit but don`t let us interrupt your alternate reality....

In the real world,it`s really no big deal.....

Can't link posts to the idiots I have talked to in the street, but here are three who think the OP is not news worthy. Do you think they felt the same way when Bush did it?

I'll try to ask about this. I'm still trying to setup some more secure communication links to ask these questions more easily but with any luck I can get some solid info on prism.

Insofar as benefits... are you kidding? The benefits of "total surveillance" for the state are incalculable. Total surveillance equates to total control.

There is zero (or near zero) chance this was done without the corporations' knowledge. What makes you think that's how it happened?

It`s not total surveillance, the only calls/emails that get looked at are ones containing key words. If you`re not doing crimes, there`s no need to be worried.....those that are worried about what they say, maybe should be.

I`m still trying to figure out why this is news.

This is old news.

On NPR the benefit was explained thus: Having the database in place allows law enforcement to use it when necessary (say after the Boston bombing.) Law enforcement does not want to build the haystack after a crime has been committed, it wants to screen the haystack for clues to ID suspects.

Who knows how you managed to construe this from Owners post.

He is right, there is nothing new going on here.

Saying that there is no problem or that it isn't newsworthy is saying that they are ok with Obamas doing it.

Sure I do. It isn't even hard. People will always do illegal things. But we could, at least prosecute them. For instance, as I understand charters this entire thing is illegal given the NSA has no grounds for domestic operation (not that they haven't been doing THAT for years also). We could read our own constitution. We could get a supreme court that has read it. That'd all be a fine start.

Then we could start crafting some new laws to adapt to the changing technological landscape. Once we've wrestled the govt. under control getting the corporations under control will be easy. You just make some laws and start throwing CEO's in prison (no fines... hard jail time) for breaking them. I imagine that would prove a powerful disincentive. If Steve Jobs had gone to prison for that business about ... you know... geotracking EVERY SINGLE APPLE CUSTOMER WORLDWIDE I should think that'd make other CEO's ponder the critical importance of avoiding such things.

We cannot stop the march of technology but we can surely decide how we wish to use it. This isn't hard. We just have to throw Obama out of office then ask if anyone else would like to give it a go.

Lucylastic -> RE: Can you hear me now? NSA & Verizon can (6/9/2013 4:17:08 PM)

While I dont disagree with you on prosecution, and jail time, hard labour would be good for that, not some minimum security couple of months bullshit, but they cant even prosecute bank leaders orwall street, let alone government NSA people, simply because they would never get it thru committee, congress and the senate
Noone has the bollocks or the will to do so.
the ACLU, Amnesty, OWS, or other citizens groups even might/will start up something, but thats bound to fail in the courts before it gets the laws written.

*nods* As Aswad said, the power structures are already locked down pretty tight. So I agree. In truth I suspect we are either going into a sort of absolute police state that makes 1984 look like a hippy love in or else there will be insurrection and the military will have to choose to stand with the populace (and know that is what they are choosing).

In the end though, the only idea there is... just like with Occupy and Tea Party... is to try to educate people and pray that the gates haven't already closed.

By the way, this post will almost certainly land me on a flagged status deep in the heart of some computer.

Dear NSA. Please understand that I do not own a gun and have no intention of buying one in the near future. Even if I did, I'm not a nut job and I get it that a few random acts of murder don't help things get better. But I thought I'd say "Hi" anyway in case a real human reads this. PS: Your wife wants you to bring home milk for breakfast tomorrow. Don't forget. That pisses her off.

YN -> RE: Can you hear me now? NSA & Verizon can (6/9/2013 6:51:32 PM)

In ninety-nine out of a hundred cases, the government wastes their time and your money.

It is that hundredth case that gets interesting.

JeffBC -> RE: Can you hear me now? NSA & Verizon can (6/9/2013 9:38:15 PM)

Yeah, I had fun with that. But it's not really a joke. Or, put differently, given the billions of dollars they have spent on this if their scanners aren't at least twitching a little then they need new programmers (Dear NSA: I need a job too).

Here's an interesting little tidbit... take a look at the 3rd response down:
