You can make everything tingle and colors turn sepia with your hand on their throat but not actually choking them and crushing their windpipe. Clamping down moderately on their arteries restricts blood flow and creates hypoxia. It restricts blood flow and blood caries the oxygen, similar results.

As some have replied, safer methods of breath play involve masks. I like gas masks.

If you really want to choke someone with your hand(s), but want them to live through it without crushing their windpipe, put your hand under their jaw where it meets the throat . . . then lift up. This pushes the tongue up into their throat. You can't really cut off their air completely that way because most can still breath a bit through the nose. It has a great effect though, very invasive, very threatening. Practice on yourself and see the reaction.

Accept the fact that this is a very high risk play. You can do it exactly the same ten times with great outcomes but the eleventh, there will be stroke or death. There is no way to do this with absolute safety.

Master and I do breatheplay quite often and it's pretty much one of our favorite play activities. We've done it every which way. We also don't claim it's safe or others should do it nor do we give out tips on how to do it safely because in reality, there is no safe way.

Thank you guys an gals! I just read everyone's replies and I immeadeatly called my Bro cuz I knew he was seeing his new Lady Friend (not sure if they are together or what..) tonight. Gave him the group consensus here "just in time". He also said to thank you all and to let you know he's going to talk with her tonight and let her know he's not comfortable doing any breath stuff right now. He said if its a big thing he will get educated.

I gotta go, but I'll be back to elaborate.

But thanks again y'all.

a lot of times when I hear bdsm or newbies talk about breathplay, it's usually something like just loosely wrapping their hands around a neck or covering her mouth for a second or two....nothing serious so honestly, I kinda ignore a lot of breathplay questions because it always turns out that way. Most have a fantasy in their head of a romantic sort of breathplay and not the stuff like Master and I and other sadists do.

Yeah, like Michael brought up, most times what people are after is the idea of edge play, and just simulating the act is plenty.

For those times where that's not what they're after... I don't want to give advice on how to do it safely cause I don't think there is a way, and I really think that this is one of those rare things that people really need to do serious homework on before they attempt it OR do it accepting that they don't really know what the fuck they're doing while risking somebody's life.

It's the types that educate themselves a little and then proclaim that they're doing it "safely" because they're doing it X way, that I find most dangerous. You wanna risk your own or somebody else's life, fine, I have absolutely no problem whatsoever with that, but don't deny that that's what you're doing, and no, this isn't one of those "puh everything is dangerous, you could slip in the shower and die" kind of risks...

heh. I hold my breathe when I'm having an orgasm. I hold my breathe when I'm nervous. I hold my breathe when I'm deep in thought. There are times I have almost passed out from those things and men used to think I was dying when we would have sex lol. I think I remember Master once said it scared him a little the first time he saw it. It's just a habit that I don't even know I'm doing until I actually have to breathe. So I guess for me, breathplay is not as big a deal for me and I accept that I am going to die one day and it just may well be from playing. It could be I die from falling down the stairs too since I am the queen of klutz and I fall down stairs it seems at least a few times a year. It's just something you accept.

I do because people seem to think I'm dying when I do it. My mom used to be scared out of her mind because my eyes would roll up into my head.

My younger brother would sleep with his eyes open, freaked everyone out. But, as you fall deeper into sleep, the autonomic nervous system takes over, forcing you to take deep breaths. When your airway is obstructed by another, you cant do that. Not to mention, as if sometimes the case, the blood flow when another is obstructing the air is often restricted. If you are holding your own breath, there is no restriction of blood flow.

Holding your breath isn't the same as breathplay (as tazzy said... quit saying what I'm going to say before I do tazzy ).

I can hold my breath for a little over 2.5 minutes, but that's totally different from having your oxygen level cut of for you.

And I'm totally cool with you accepting that you may die, and that you choose to engage in something you know may kill you because you enjoy it. However, don't come up with that crap of "I could fall down the stairs" cause it ain't the same thing. Different activities have different inherent risk levels attached to them. Walking down stairs ain't the same as riding a rodeo, and it ain't the same as engaging in serious breath play.

Pretending like it is is denying the risk... not accepting it.

Not FW, fw, as in a woman who is free (though not the same as when angel used to claim that because I do consider myself internally free, not just a woman who happens to be unowned)... not a Gorean FW, I don't claim to be Gorean. Djeeze, how dare you not keep up with the exact nuance of how I identify myself.

You have noooo idea how much of a klutz I am. There's a reason people refuse to allow me to stand on anything and how I have no periperal vision so I walk in front of things all the time and I am constantly bumping into things. Yeah...there's a 75% chance I will die from it. I'm quite aware of it. For me, it's exactly the same.

The fact that you're currently still alive statistically invalidates the claim that the risk is the same.

Their are credible experts on both sides of this issue.

The reality is that for 97.392% of people, the mental aspect of choking is 131% of the effect. So, putting your handd on the neck of a person in bondage will achieve 96.45% of the effect of actually choking them.

Made up statistics aside, I agree. Putting your hand on someone's neck just tenderly enough to feel their pulse and telling them "don't breathe until told" is much safer than playing with one of the most dangerous kinks ever created.

This is something that has always puzzled me. In every single breath play discussion in every single fetish forum I have ever seen the discussion always and immediately turns to choking. Can someone explain to me why these things are so inextricably linked to one another? I enjoy breath play in a couple different variations and I have never ever choked anyone and have no intention to ever do so. My aversion to choking has never impeded my enjoyment of breath play. Do people really think that the only way to manipulate someone's air supply is by strangling them? It seems so.

Or did I offend you? If so to either of you....sorry, but preaching the dangers and saying talk to a doctor (like any doctor is going to give advice on how to do breath play) is the same, or seems to me, as saying Don't do it. I said what I did because I have seen it often happen that when someone asks how to do something the only things they are told is go to an event and learn or just don't do it. Breath play, gun play, knife play, blood play, simulated drowning, etc. there are a lot of things people choose not to take part and good for them. Better safe than sorry is a very good answer for some but not all people. If I offended anyone that posted on this thread before I did, or hell after I did, I'm sorry but I would rather tell someone they should put on an oven mitt or use a pot holder than just tell them don't take the pan out of the oven you will burn yourself.
