The ACA does a lot more than just cover the uninsured.

By all means, but it's what it doesn't do that I was pointing out.

There is truth here. It is often simply common sense to figure out what is an emergency, and what can be taken care of by a normal visit to your PCP.

Status: offline 		And some people, particularly the uninsured, do not have a PCP. So, when they get sick, even with a minor cold or stomach virus, they are in the emergency rooms where they have to by law, be seen.

Oh, and my son's last emergency room visit resulted in a 3 day hospital stay. He'd been having digestive problems. An upper and lower GI revealed a cyst and we are still awaiting the biopsy results.

Do you know that a cough can actually be whooping cough in a young child? Which is quite, quite serious.

It can also be caused by pneumonia in all ages.

Bronchitis.. Respiratory syncytial virus?

Many causes that require medical attention.

And not everyone has a PCP. Should they just stay home until they can afford one?

Which a PCP can determine.

Cherry picking the worst possibilities of a symptom does not invalidate the fact that said symptom can often be treated without going to the ER. That is an awful weak rebuttal to pahunk's claim.

Status: offline 		Not at all. He claimed they were nonserious issues. I consider all of them serious. Nonserious to me would be a splinter. Because you dont know the patients health history (someone with a transplant would definitely need to go to an ER if they had a cold), financial abilities to pay, or even the conditions they live in would all determine if their symptoms need to be checked by a medical professional or not.

And ER's dont have to treat nonserious situations. You are aware of that, yes? They can be told to go home, did you know that? Referred to a PCP if the patient doesnt have one, yes? But they do have to be triaged. You know, assessed, by a medical personal, to determine if the situation is serious enough to be treated in the ER.

Status: offline 		I woke up one morning with numbness in my face and bad eyes, I went to my doctor, who sent me immediately to the ER, where they sat me down for threee hours, apart from my face, I looked completely normal, no fever, nothing. I had bells palsy. and ended up having a cat scan And I live in canada, where my health care is socialised...
Another time he sent me to emerg for walking pneumonia,
the fact that emerg can get stuff done faster than booking an appointment for tests is another reason people go.
People ASSume for all kinds of reasons, and are blooody ignorant 99% of the time
