DomKen -> Something people actually should be outraged about (6/17/2013 3:06:31 PM)

Apparently it is a growing trend that low age employers are paying their employees not by check or direct deposit but by fee heavy debit cards.
http://www.timesleader.com/article/20130614/news/306149722

First banks made it hard to open an account, I was once asked to show 2 credit cards to open an account, then they said either keep a large minimum deposit or use direct deposit or pay a large fee. Now they are scamming the least able to resist by pushing these cards on them.

How are you going to feel when your employer starts paying you with a prepaid debit card?

I would have no choice but to kill him Ken.

(However, I think neither of these possibilities are likely....for 99.99999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999% of the general population....you can relax).

Would you conclude the chase conspired to arrange this set up?

Would you conclude that centralized power/decision making was a wonderful thing- in this happenstance?

kdsub -> RE: Something people actually should be outraged about (6/17/2013 5:42:21 PM)

Damn now that is outrageous...Now I do know people that cannot open a bank account for one reason or another that would like this system but it should be a choice not a mandate. I hope they get burned and will be interested in the outcome if you see it.

Sadly, our banks are much the same.
If you can prove you don't need a bank account or a credit card, they throw them at you.

I'd love to see all them bankers all hung by the bollox from the highest yard-arm.
And no friggin golden handshake of millions and a fat pension to retire on!

Total fucking bullshit. The story I saw today said there is an effort to turn this into a class action. I hope they do.

Of course, checking accounts have fees too, and check cashing storefronts get their cut, but with those, you can at least pick your poison, or find an alternate means.

Chase is in the business of making profits off credit/debit cards and other loan instruments. Capitalists in a loosely regulated market. That's what Capitalists do. Don't understand your brief with Chase.

vincentML -> RE: Something people actually should be outraged about (6/17/2013 7:50:11 PM)

Cash stores take a huge vig and folks who lack bank accounts have very little alternatives. Zero choices, I would think.

Go back to sleep. Dincha hear- it is better to blame the other party- then to comprehend monetary policy- HA

Zero choices? What a stunningly ignorant assertion.

The easy alternative is having a friend or family member with an account cash the paycheck for you. I was doing that for a nephew just a few months ago, when he started his first job. Easier still to make a purchase you would make anyway at store that will cash it. I know landlords who will happily cash paychecks, to make sure they get the rent on time.

If the debit card fees amount to less than checking account charges ($17.95 a month at my bank, for people without access to free accounts), or to what the storefront is going to take, then it might well be the best option, but it shouldn't be the only one.

pahunkboy -> RE: Something people actually should be outraged about (6/17/2013 8:38:19 PM)

Thats odd- there are no min- no fees checking at the credit union, in a town of 10,000 that I can walk to. My credit is even bad!!

In my case a debit card fees are ALWAYS higher then the credit union fees

Aren't Unemployment cards issued through Chase, and have the same fees?

If so why is it OK for the government to screw over the people, and not the employers?

My daughter gets paid on a card from McDonald's . It's a problem. Sometimes it randomly declines at a register, then she has to go get cash out of an atm , being charged by the card and whoever owns the atm.

Now I have her withdraw most of the money and put it in her bank account, so she can use her regular debit card attached to her free account. That way she only has one fee for the cash withdrawal.

You can get paid by deposit into a checking account once you are a store manager and above. She is a shift manager.

I really hate this system, and can't wait until she's done with school and can leave.

I would say there are huge differences.

Why should people who actually work for a fucking living have more hoops to jump thru and expenses than those who don't?

The waiting time between the end of a pay period and payday must not exceed: (a) the time specified in a written contract between employer and employee, or (b) the standard time lapse customary in the trade, or (c) 15 days.

Apparently it is a growing trend

Here (Houston, TX) I read that now Section 8 are getting debit cards instead of checks in the mail.. I am not sure what that does, I guess it would save on mailing costs and its automated so takes less employees to manage, and the section 8 person gets it right away so the rent can be paid on time.. I have no personal experience with this so not sure if its a good thing or not.. it does sound like it makes sense in this instance..

for the person/employer that hires temp/casual or illegal workers, having a debit card with a certain amount on it would give them proof (when it was purchased) of the cost of the work for tax deduction purposes, more than giving someone cash does..
