When agents dressed in street clothes thought a 12 pack of bottled water was beer, they proceeded to terrorize college students by jumping on top of their SUV, pulling a gun, and trying to break their windows out. When they drove off (I probably would too if someone was trying to bust my windows out), bumping 2 of the agents in the process, and called 911, another agent pulled them over and had the nerve to arrest the driver on felony charges. Considering the agents were acting like a street gang trying to rob someone, it's no wonder the students didn't believe they were law enforcement. Plus, why would they call 911 if they thought they were cops? At least the charges were dropped. I hope in the future that police department trains their undercover agents not to act like psycho street gangs.

This is a joke, right?

Something surely is, and I'm hoping it's not the police.

"They were showing unidentifiable badges after they approached us, but we became frightened, as they were not in anything close to a uniform," Daly wrote in an account submitted to the court. "I couldn't put my windows down unless I started my car, and when I started my car they began yelling to not move the car, not to start the car. They began trying to break the windows. My roommates and I were ... terrified."

So we have 3 women who panicked, didnt look at badges, and drove off. Thankfully no one was hurt. The charges may not have been so swiftly dropped had they been.

The girl never should've been arrested. I don't understand why the agents aren't in trouble for their conduct.

Why should they be? They are ABC agents. They showed badges. They attempted to ask questions. They were ignored. Their commands were ignored. The women attempted to drive off. Try looking at it from their point of view.

There's a simple rule advocated by the state police here in IL: If you are unsure as to whether the person trying to pull you over is actually a cop, put your flashers on and continue driving to a toll booth, oasis, police dept, etc and dial 9-1-1 from your phone. There have been many cases of police impersonation and if they guy on your tail is actually a cop, the dispatcher will verify it.

I would like to have seen all of the LEO's involved take immediate drug/alcohol tests. This type of response to the what they thought was a (very minor) crime is completely unacceptable.
I also think there may be a little bit more to this story than has been reported. Can't wait to hear more.

We have 3 women who tried to roll down the windows to cooperate, only to have the agents dressed in street clothing start trying to bust their windows out. Their actions gave the girls good reason to believe they were being attacked by thugs impersonating undercover agents. As soon as they were clear of the attack, they dialed 911. As I said before, if they thought they were evading LEO, why would they call 911?

What was the purpose of the attention they were getting in the first place? On appearance alone, looking underage maybe... with what could have looked like alcohol, that a store would most likely ID them for before they walked out with it and if they looked that young to start with... they go to such an extreme? Six or more officers may have had the place staked out, but then they should have had a bit more to go on than what it seems they did.

Odd...

After badges were shown?

They showed badges.

unidentifiable badges

They attempted to ask questions. They were ignored.

How were they ignored when the girls tried to roll down the window?

The women attempted to drive off.

Not until the agents started trying to break out their windows. Wouldn't most people think real agents would call for backup instead of acting like thugs? If someone started trying to bust my vehicle windows out I'd flee too because I'd think I was being attacked.

The brutally honest truth is that they thought the girls were going to offer blow jobs to avoid arrest. The Patriot Act and a whole host of similar state level legislation has allowed LEA to become little more than just the biggest gang in the area.

I guess this would apply for the female officer as well? While I know personally of out of line officers and watched some at a sub station on our street, do nothing more than bring their mistresses to have fun there... I think this is a stretch, but that in only my opinion.

Define unidentifiable?

Those cops are issued metal badges. Is that what made them "unidentifiable"?

Those cops dont wear uniforms...

How were they stopped? The excuse is that they started the car.. and they had to have the car started to roll down the windows. No, you simply turn the car on, you dont have to crank the engine to roll down windows.

She should have gotten into her car, called 911, and waited. Especially after hearing them yell about badges.

Its a college town. ffs, the girls didnt know, but ignorance is no excuse. If an officer had been hurt, this would have a completely different outcome.

3 girls, 6 cops. I dont consider that too many, or too few, to handle this situation.

And if there are that many ABC cops at one location, its a known hot spot for buying alcohol without a license or for selling to underage. They were there for a specific reason.

The choice for most UVA students is between Harris Teeter and Kroger, both located in the Barracks Rd Shopping Center.

I suppose I should have qualified that with a declaration that my opinion of LEA in general is highly jaundiced.

I did. I can only reiterate that I'm glad I don't live over there.

I would probably have responded the same way, if it came to the point of breaking the windows, given that six targets are hard to take out. Yes, I realize you don't need to turn the ignition all the way to operate the windows, but that's a simple thing to forget or botch, which undercover police should be aware of (and they should also be aware that being out of uniform makes you harder to identify). The police are paid to handle things a bit more gracefully than the average citizen might, and to take risks we don't expect the average citizen to take. Without that, what good are they?

Why would one jump on the car or try to break the windows, anyway?

If they were worried the girls were gonna drive off, either of those actions would be a bad idea.

IWYW,

I dont see where the cops did anything wrong. If a cop suspects someone of committing a crime, do they let them drive off? Of course not.

They call them "pigs" for a reason. Ask anyone who works at a battered women's shelter why. Most shelters kerp the location of their safehouse secret from cops for a,reason.

And that's just street cops, I have seen the feds do shit that if anyone but a pig did it would land them in jail. I am.glad they didnt let the cops hastle them.for blowjobs.

First of all, they were not city or county police officers, they were North Carolina BTAF agents.

Second, NCBATF agents do not wear uniforms.

Third, if they could not tell the difference between a case of water and a case of beer, they need glasses. The few bottled water companies that still use boxes for their product have their name in nice large letters all over the damn box.

Fourth, having lived in North Carolina for a number of years, I can attest that the average BATF agent is a douche of unprecedented levels. I have been carded by these agents coming out of an ABC store and I had a full beard, long hair and mostly gray. Then they questioned the validity of a NC CDL license.
