(A dialogue between Socrates and Protagoras)

Protagoras: Truth is relative. It is only a matter of opinion.

Socrates: You mean that truth is mere subjective opinion?

Protagoras: Exactly. What is true for you is true for you, and what is true for me, is true for me. Truth is subjective.

Socrates: Do you really mean that? That my opinion is true by virtue of its being my opinion?

Protagoras: Indeed I do.

Scorates: My opinion is: Truth is absolute, not opinion, and that you, Mr. Protagoras, are absolutely in error. Since this is my opinion, then you must grant that it is true according to your philosophy.

Protagoras: You are quite correct, Socrates.

Truth is subjective. What you may consider true, I may not, based upon experience, education and ability.

MrBukani -> RE: What is your truth? (7/2/2013 6:53:42 AM)

I think people are subjective, the truth is just what it is. It's the opposite of false.

Real0ne -> RE: What is your truth? (7/2/2013 7:20:17 AM)

not quite

truth is a complete accounting of the facts of an event or thing etc.

for instance we could claim it is a fact the sky is blue and waltz everyone out there and they all look up and confirm the sky is blue and agree it is an established fact.

However the truth is it has no color what so ever.

another, you come upon a dying person and you see a big knife, You pick it up and examine it. Another person sees you with a knife and concludes that you murdered the person because the facts would lead to that conclusion. However the truth would be that you merely examined the knife.

what those guys are arguing about more so reflects the elements of religion and the structure of beliefs. you believe the sky is blue because all your senses tell you this is so, and you have no basis to believe otherwise. Hence the importance of the freedom of religion and the "exercise" thereof. That has been abolished in practice for hundreds of years but given great lip service.

Truth is absolute.

Belief is subjective.

I may believe X is true, someone else may believe it is false.

It cannot be both. One of us is therefore wrong.

chatterbox24 -> RE: What is your truth? (7/2/2013 7:29:16 AM)

hmmmmm

IT subjective to me. My truth of how I tell a story and what I viewed is my truth, and the way so and so tells it is their truth. BUt the facts are the only thing that are absolute. THe time, the date, the place.

One person may say YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL, and that's the truth. and it is to them. THe next guy might say YOU ARE UGLY AS HELL, and that's their truth, as it is to them.

LMAO.

Real0ne -> RE: What is your truth? (7/2/2013 7:29:34 AM)

No truth is not absolute, but it is an attempt to obtain absolute "correctness".

thats an inappropriate approach for the word truth and is more a matter of taste. the word beauty doesnt even apply since it could never rank as a fact.

it does emphasize the importance of religion and ones ability to act upon it however.

you believe by some standard or instinct that someone is beautiful and hence you are motivated and attracted to them.

that process is more along the lines of religion.

truth requires facts and is more along the lines of empiracism.

FelineRanger -> RE: What is your truth? (7/2/2013 7:35:19 AM)

Truth is objective, such as the refraction of light through air makes the sky appear blue on a clear day.

Interpretation is subjective, such as the shade of blue is robin's egg or azure or some other shade.

Two people can view the same incident and come to the different truth.

Taking the sky example. You could say its blue, a scientist knowing his truth could say its colorless, a color blind person may see green.

Truth isnt always the same for each person.

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder because people are subjective.
But to deny truth is absolute, is transforming it into an absolute truth.

Without any consensus we would live in constant chaos.

again emphasizing the value of religion and the free exercise thereof.

people are expected in society today to have the same truth and facts, which is impossible unless we are to form ourselves into the Borg collective.

this would eliminate all truth outside commonly acknowledged paradigms of the time.

truth is determined by each person individually.

what is important is to know how to get to the truth and separate it from belief.

I disagree.

we would live in unfathomable creativity each having their own order according to their own devises.

what we have now is the growing borg cancer that everything must have socially approved order as the highest good, hence we create culture destroying governments to demolish the last remnants individual order.

the destruction of truth.

When the sun sets we see beautifull purple and red skies.
During midday it looks blue.
The consensus of calling blue blue and red red gives us the ability to discern and reason.
The colorblind have a defect wich distorts reality.
Reality is an absolute truth.

which in part forms the basis for reality checks and the consequential formation of various groups justifying to some degree the necessity for acknowledgement and validation by others.

ok but truth cannot come into existence without first being a belief.

MrBukani -> RE: What is your truth? (7/2/2013 8:11:14 AM)

Truth is defined by the science of tests and trials.

Likin steak or tartar is an individual truth of taste. It is still absolute to the individual.
But a steak is not a tartar in the general consensus nor in reality.

Not hardly... the truth changes all the time...what we all agree is truth today may be false tomorrow... Truth is only what a majority agree to be true. Science proves this all the time and so does politics. You are nitpicking to try and separate the truth from humanity it cannot be done because we are ultimately the creators and judges of what is truth or not.

Maybe for scientists yes, but truth can also come unexpected without any belief.
I wonder if a baby believes... I think it's more of a spunge that absorbes information indiscriminatly.
