avocado's used to be called 'poor man's butter' - particularly when used mashed up well and salted/peppered. i'm unable to find anything that refers to WHY this is so, but my wild-ass guess would be that when butter was too expensive for the peasants to eat, avocado's were more plentiful in the countryside and not considered a 'high class' fruit.

just found this too, courtesy of wiki: "High avocado intake was shown in one preliminary study to lower blood cholesterol levels. Specifically, after a seven-day diet rich in avocados, mild hypercholesterolemia patients showed a 17% decrease in total serum cholesterol levels. These subjects also showed a 22% decrease in both LDL (harmful cholesterol) and triglyceride levels and 11% increase in HDL (helpful cholesterol) levels."

I had a go at the chocolate mousse - the texture was good but it was a little bitter, I must've overdone the cocoa powder. You were right that I couldn't taste the avocado at all. I do miss the dairy to round out the cocoa though.

Next experiment I think will be using it for a pasta sauce or in some hummus. I was surprised by how mild the taste is but I'm not overly keen the texture of it as it comes.

Perfectly ripe though, so thanks! Now I've seen and felt it ripe I'll know what to look for.

No one said anything about how quickly leftover Avocado goes bad in the fridge. Basically, the next time you open the door, it's too late. I suggest you not even try to use less than a whole one.

Oh, and the seed is great fun if you are into houseplants. Don't just grow one, collect the whole set!

Funnily enough I was just eyeing up the lovely heavy seeds wondering if I could coax one to life. I don't think it's warm enough here to actually fruit though.

Last night I had avocado ice lollies and they were gorgeous. They were so lovely I had to come and share the recipe so you can all have some in the sunshine:

1 avocado, mashed
juice and zest of 1 lime
4tbsp of sugar (or to taste)
pinch of salt
about 3/4 cup of water.

Pulsed together in a blender until an even consistency, and frozen in moulds! So easy. So good I just had one for my pre-run snack at 5am.

I might be late to the party but wow, I think I am hooked on avocados. I can't believe how versatile they are.

Leave the pit in the half you're not using right away, and squeeze some lemon juice over the flesh before sealing in a zip-lock (press the air out).

I don't even bother to squeeze the lemon juice over the leftover, I just put the pit back in and use a sandwich bag. Works fine. The top millimeter browns because of the lack of lemon juice but that doesn't bother me.

It isn't very hard to keep avocado from going bad.

When you seal up the container put plastic wrap right down on the surface of the dip. It works like a charm.

The avocado itself doesn't go bad quickly. Oxygen will discolor it quicker than you can say, "Oxygen will discolor it."

After using half an avocado, I leave the seed in the other half, and plastic wrap it really well. That holds it in the fridge for a good bit. Like some other foods, if you wipe the surface w/lemon juice, I believe it preserves it even better.
