I lived in Chicago for a brief 3 years when I worked for a division of General Motors in LaGrange, Ill., right out of college (a suburb of Chicago, as you probably know). Then they had a huge layoff then that had nothing to do w/anyone's work ability, just seniority, so I came back to Omaha because I felt homesick). I loved Chicago, though - I loved the Art Insititue, and Marhsall Field's and Saks, and Bonwit & Teller, and all of the theater, and the hot-dogs and pizza, and the Cubs (they can be such noble losers who can't love the Cubs)? I still have two friends there I correspond with from that time.

Oh Susan, Susan, I hate to burst your bubble...but:

Bonwit Teller is long gone...tho the rumor is that they may bring back a "Fashion Boutique" with that name.

Sax is here, but mediocre I'm told...the real hot fashion dept. store is Nordstrom.  A store based in...SEATTLE?

And FIELDS is going.  YES.  Marshall Fields is changing its name (and all the pundits say soon, its style)...to *GAG*  Macys.   Can you believe it?  No Frango Mints made locally....no Field's windows at Christmas...no brunch with Santa in the Walnut Room ...hell NO WALNUT ROOM at all.

Makes a grown consumer man want to cry.  The theater is BETTER than it ever has been...the hot dogs are still great and my darling girl tells me you can go to about 5 Fluky's around town (tho BIG HERM's in Skokie is gone *SOB*)...and its a wonderful town.  So come back anyway...but learn the new lingo.

...it seems the general consensus for most Dominants and sub/slaves alike is that the people they'd like to meet are also in faraway locations.  So I got to thinking why it turns out that the Dominant close to me whom I'm not particularly interested in meeting is the same Dominant some poor slave would like to meet but lives on the other side of the world and vice versa!  Why is that?  Seems kind of strange don't you think?

Naw, it's not strange at all!  I think when looking for that perfect chemistry we all take into account more then just the kink, we have to look at the Nilla life we've gotta live too.  Most times you may be able to find one or the other near home, both? rare..........
and on a side note, ~ there is nothing wrong with BFE!!!~

Bonwit Teller is gone? No - this can't be happening! Marshall Field's was sold to Macy's? Macy's is okay, but has always struck me as slightly bland in it's image.I do like Nordstorm's, though. Gee, here in Omaha people acted like it was a huge deal when Dillard's opened about 8 years ago. I'm not trying to sound like a snob, and am not a shopoholic, but I like to look. I truly do have enough "stuff" to last me the rest of my life, probably.

But, I was a Marketing Management/Research major and retailing fascinates me because the feedback retailers get is so immediate - advertising something a certain way either works or it doesn't and you can usuaully tell within a matter of days.I think the Bonwit Tellers are closing maybe because some of the Wal-Marts, Targets and K-Marts are expanding their sections dealing with goods that have been previously thought of as only appealing to more upscale markets.

My opinion is that th may be just as well, since it means fewer consumers may be getting ripped off (but some people don't mind, retailers love them) - however it may also mean that more Chinese prisoners are making those goods (what can we do, though - move off the planet? Such is capitalism and we can't have it both ways, I guess.  -Susan

You need to study and understand Murphy's Law. The basic context is that: "What can get fucked up will get fucked up...."

Tried long distance and is very difficult.  Most of the time someone ends up hurt.  Hope He is not reading this but if so know that love and distance equals heartbreak.

The 3 rules of successful marketing according to McD's -
1)  Location
2)  Location
and most importantly:
3)  Location.

If you live by these rules you prolly live off BigMacs for the rest of your life unless you are extremely lucky.

Why consider location a constraint before you even know if the person will be more than a friend - and if they turn out to be more, consider the options.  Only one has to move.  I know people who have moved halfway around the world to form successful relationships, and those who never got past looking next door fail.

If the familiaraity of having a big Mac is more important to you than the exotic calls from further afield, then I think that the priorities are very different to mine.

I am with Iron Bear on this one.  Soon as I read the OP, I said to myself Murphy's Law.

I just came out of a LDR, and it was very hard.  I am talking 1300 miles between us.  I used to think constantly...  why, when I lived 300 miles from him we didn't meet?  Damn Murphy!!   lol  The bastid is probably Irish too!

Yup. I've noticed that. Then are are the REALLY great guys that just seem to have it all, except for that pesky wife.

It's just human nature to idealize what we can't have.

I read the OP like 5 times to make sure I was reading this right...
The same Dominants you are NOT interested in meeting is the same Dominants some poor slave would like to meet but lives on the other side of the world.
All because you're not interested in this (these) dominants... doesn't mean someone else isn't.

As for they just may see something you refuse to look at. As others have stated.. what is ones sour grape... is anothers glass of wine.

I had a little epiphany tonight.  I was thinking about how all the profiles that approach what I'm hoping to find in a partner are always from people in faraway locations.  Then it struck me...it seems the general consensus for most Dominants and sub/slaves alike is that the people they'd like to meet are also in faraway locations.  So I got to thinking why it turns out that the Dominant close to me whom I'm not particularly interested in meeting is the same Dominant some poor slave would like to meet but lives on the other side of the world and vice versa!  Why is that?  Seems kind of strange don't you think?

It can be quite true.  It is funny how life works sometimes.  When I first got involved in WIITWD, I was involved with a submissive that lived a reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaally long distance away.  In a whole other country known as Canada.  Difficult.  Extremely, and yet she was the one who I also saw the most often and who I was in my longest term relationship with.  I've also had a submissive right here in Colorado who lived less than 2 hours away from me.  And yet the biggest part of the problem with our relationship in the end was the fact that she considered us to be too far away from each other and I wouldn't consider starting over again with my practice elsewhere.  Ironically, that's not as big a factor for me as it once was but that's another story for another time...
Anyway, the bouncing ball of fate can seem cruel at times.  I wanted to agree with you on that but also tell you that sometimes, nearness...for some anyway...can translate into "you have to be right here, no matter where we are in the relationship" and this can easily happen with those close as well as far away.

To the OP:

I've also experienced that feeling distant people seeming to always be the most attractive.  And like you, I've wondered who out there is interested in those locally (or elsewhere, for that matter) who are not of interest to me.

It's a big world full of people, with someone to suit nearly everyone's tastes.  I imagine distance sometimes imparts a feeling of "forbidden fruit" which makes the distant one more appealing than they might otherwise be.  Or, perhaps the fact of distance blurs some otherwise visible defects?

In either case, find satisfaction where it is, not just where you look for it.

wow.- what an interesting thread....I am glad I am not alone in thinking, oh for so many years....that I get along with/ are most attracted to, women in the lifestyle that live far away from me....but I have come to realize that where I live I am lucky to find anyone in the lifestyle, and unfortunately those subs that I am attracted to dont ever reply who live close to me....
for some reason people in California and NYC seem more attractive to me, as well as people from Europe...

they should do a study on this....

{fast reply}

This is an interesting thread .. especially when you see people have their 'limits'.. be able to meet withing xx days, be no further than xx miles.  Wow it is really strange, in an era that we might have to travel across the country to find a job, we can't travel to the next suburb to find a life partner!

I know one couple, she from Scotland, he from the USA that had an online relationship for 2 years.  She then moved to usa.. but not to his state, but another not far away.  From there, they saw each other at weekends whenever they could.  After another 12 months,  she moved to his city, and got her own apartment there.. and they saw each other far more regularly.  Eventualy they got married.. and lived happily (with all the dramas of r/l) everafter.

NOW ...  is compatibility about a mutual fetish of say, being spanked, or is about a mutual mindset.  Set your 30 day or 30 mile limit, and you will fill your life with compromises.  You can travel to another state to find another job, but can't even travel to the next state to find a life partner.  Where are the priorities?

Brosco

I've thought about this quite a bit myself, living in Michigan these days. I've found practically nothing here but fakes, money dommes and women who advertise for exactly me, but seem to be seeking something they're not advertising for. So, after puttering around and feeling crappy about the situation, I decided to actually do something about it.

I never had the problems I have now while I was living in the San Francisco Bay Area. So I'm actively seeking out employment in the Bay Area. I went on the second interview last night with a national firm that is exactly what I'm seeking, but would place me directly in the Bay Area again. It may take some months for this to go through, but rather than feel bad about not finding anyone in this geographical area, I'm going to the place where I never actually had a problem finding someone of quality. If this and several back ups don't work out, I'll be stuck here in Michigan still, but at least I will have tried to do something to better my situation.

I guess a large part of the atraction of someone far away is the exoticism and a lot of romantic projections. Having once thought I might end up in Fresno and having since visited the place to find it is a soulless conservative pit, I've been pretty well cured of the romantic idea. Though I can see why a place like Fresno would make kink spicey and exciting and that is because it is oppressive.

Now I'm just happy with Amsterdam. I can live life to the full, smoke dope and chat to a policeman at the same time if I want and not have my kink in the closet. Though the openness I have to admit, does somewhat detract from the spiciness of kink. It would take an awful lot to get me to move anywhere else in the world for anything other than a visit. Other places are just a romantic fiction and that romance will disappear once you have to start getting up early in the morning to go to work.

I live in, what i consider, close to a lifestyle wasteland, thank goodness there are people not too far away though.(about 4 hours drive)
Now I just have to deal with the issues of getting there once in a while
