I have to admit, the only ways that the Canadians I have talked to think Canada is superior to the US are pretty pragmatic and I tend to agree. Largely they center around two areas, "military policy" and "social safety net". Other than that, the Canadians I talk to LIKE americans and america. They tend to have lots of American friends. They tend to know a fair degree about America. ROFL, it's the American expats who.. well.. are more vocal about how much they like Canada. As you say, the "license plate" thing is an artifact of having so many border communities where "popping over the border" in either direction for this or that is pretty common. That's where that 56% day trip number comes from in my estimate. The Canadians I've known or encountered (live or on the internet) run the gamut from decent, open minded and humble to arrogant, ignorant, nationalistic, crybaby (your girls lost the soccer game - deal with it) dickheads. Most, of course, fall somewhere in between... just like people everywhere. I admit I am sensitive, and have a visceral reaction, to any kind of "I'm superior" thinking - doubly so if it is directed at me.
